The Registers of the Consistory of Geneva at the Time of Calvin: Volume 1: 1542-1544
1 review
Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company
, 2000
Tantalizingly incomplete but great window into Calvin's church
During seminary at Princeton there was a big set of matching blue volumes in the reference collection that really fascinated me. Bound typescripts of the consistory minutes of Calvin's church in Geneva. I believe these were the only copies in the Western Hemisphere. Unfortunately they were in French -- and Old (16th century) French at that. Not real accessible, even for those on campus. ...
Adultery and Divorce in Calvin's Geneva (Harvard Historical Studies)
Robert Kingdon
Harvard University Press
, 1995
In Calvin's Geneva, the changes associated with the Reformation were particularly abrupt and far-reaching, in large part owing to John Calvin himself. Adultery and Divorce in Calvin's Geneva makes two major contributions to our understanding of this time. The first is to the history of divorce. The second is in illustrating the operations of the Consistory of Geneva--an institution designed to control in all its variety the behavior of the ...

John Witte Jr.
, Robert M. Kingdon
Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company
, 2005
You wouldn't expect it from his dour reputation, but John Calvin transformed the Western concept of sex, marriage, and family life. This fascinating, even sensational volume comprehensively treats the new theology and law that Calvin and his fellow reformers established in sixteenth-century Geneva. Calvin made marriage and divorce, children's welfare, and sexual sin matters of both church and state, and many of the reforms that he and others ...

Robert Kingdon
Harvard University Press
, 1988
An epochal event in French history, the St. Bartholomew's Day religious massacres are still the subject of controversy. A leading historian of the early modern period, Robert Kingdon, writes about the reactions to the massacres that were published at the time, showing how the relatively new medium of print was used by the Protestants to shape reaction to the catastrophe an early example of the printing press as an agent of social and political ...
History Has Many Voices (Sixteenth Century Essays and Studies)
Truman State University Press
, 2003
This volume presents essays from eight scholars who trained with Robert Kingdon, a vanguard of early modern studies. He required students to go to primary sources, yet they were free to pursue their own curiosity. No matter what their approach to the sources, students were held to a high standard of thoroughness, precision, and attention to detail. This festschrift displays something of the diversity of language, source materials, methods, and ...
