Gloriana: The Portraits of Queen Elizabeth I (Pimlico)

Excellent pictures, but limited scope
I really liked this book! I enjoy reading about and researching the Tudors (by researching, I mean reading existing research). I have a book "All the Queen's Men: Elizabeth and her Courtiers" by Neville Williams. I loved the reproductions of paintings in that book, and so tracked down "Gloriana" to see and compare as many pictures of Elizabeth as I could. I must say the pictures are great, ...

what an excellent book for childrens use
I am a mother of three children and have historical questions thrown at me each week. After a long search I found Roy Strong's,excellently written The Story of Britian, it is easy to understand, no waffle, clear and concise, the perfect book for quick referance on history. It is the ideal starting point for any historical matter, from 55B.C. to the postscript beyond 1990. A valuable book for ...

Small Formal Gardens a Winner
At first I thought this book would be too sophisticated for a non-professional such as myself - I was wrong! There are many great ideas which I plan to use this summer in my own garden. The author illustrates many garden plans, I have decided to borrow plans from several of them. He also explains tips on how to use symmetry, how to create illusions using height and space, etc. He also explains ...

A not-so-hidden mastery
Kevin Coates is a British jeweller, who works in...pretty much anything he wants. Very figurative work, starting out in the early '70s with innovative use of titanium, largely for its colour. He also works extensively with baroque and handcarved stones, incorporating them into the figurative portions of the work. He's still one of my two favorite people for using titanium for his own purposes, ...

Good Book
Nice book, but lacks plans how to build some simple engines. Great info, and history, but I wanted one with complete plans for a solar Sterling and plans on a larger functional sterling in detail. This book is for a great introduction into the hot air engines. I would recomend it for an introduction to hot engines. But if you are looking for a book to invent or make one, then look elseware.

An excellent reference book...
I was very pleased with this book. It is all about the costume (dress) collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The book shows both color and black and white photos of virtually every costume on display with detailed captions (a hole section is nothing but photos and descriptions of the collection). The photos are amazing. The book covers the years in which the garments were made as ...
Beaton: Portraits

PICTURE PERFECT, WELL DEVELOPED AND STUNNING!
It's the photo of Robert and Ethel Kennedy that got to us. We always knew Cecil Beaton was a genius --- actor, costume designer, diarist, lover of Greta Garbo, social historian and all-around 20th century Gadabout. There wasn't a place worth going to that he hadn't been, and there wasn't a person worth knowing that he hadn't met. And, as evidenced by the comprehensive Beaton Portraits, damn few ...
A Little History of the English Country Church

A fabulous overview
This book brought to life the succession of historical movements in the church- political, liturgical, theological- and how they shaped the way churches looked and functioned. I found this book a delightfully easy read with lots of helpful pictures and diagrams. I bought several additional copies for friends! It's that good.
