Back in the company of Inspector Wexford
I've been pretty hard on Ruth Rendell lately. I miss the startling acid observations in her earlier psychological thrillers and their wicked plot twists. I miss her writing as Barbara Vine, under which she produces her best work. After spending several decades in her company, I think I've gotten greedy and for that I'm sorry. The worst Ruth Rendell is better than the best of many of her ...

Absolutely stunning
Anita Margolis, young, beautiful, carefree, has vanished into thin air. She left her home to attend a party one wet evening, but has not been seen since. She is reported missing soon after by her brother, whom she shared a flat with, the acclaimed but eccentric artist Rupert Margolis. Inspector Burden quickly forms an impression of a wanton young girl simply gone off somewhere with a boyfriend ...

The Water's Lovely
I enjoyed this book very much. It has interesting characters, lots of anticipated suspence, and the usual excellent story by Ruth Rendell.

Excellent murder mystery
Terrific vintage Rendell, one of the best Chief Inspector Wexford mysteries. The wealthy and beautiful Elizabeth Nightingale is murdered one night in the woods, and it is up to the intelligent, cantankerous Wexford and his sidekick Burden to solve the crime. This appears at first to be a fairly ordinary mystery; the leisurely pace and sharp humor may fool the reader into thinking that this ...

The Best of the Best
A lot of mystery writers will name A JUDGMENT IN STONE as one of the crime novels they most admire, and Ruth Rendell herself has mentioned it as a personal favorite. It is included in virtually every "Top 100 Mysteries of All Time" list I've ever seen. It has also been filmed twice (as 1987's THE HOUSEKEEPER and 1995's LA CEREMONIE). Why all the fuss? Read it for yourself and find out. There's ...

An Elegant Piece of Mystery Fiction
"Some Lie and Some Die" is a superbly crafted mystery novel. It's short--in pages, and in time-line, and it's not overly burdened with plotting or diverting details. It is, in a word, elegant. The events (a murder, a missing girl, a palette of suspects) are set against the backdrop of a rock concert, complete with egotistical stars and fawning sycophants, spoiled fans and irate neighbors. But ...

As Usual, a Rendell Ending with a Twist
This is a much older Rendell, an Inspector Wexford from 1967. It probably seems a bit dated and therefore poorly reviewed. I see another example of Rendell's beautifully written and convoluted plots. The book that you think you are reading as you go along turns abruptly in the midst of the story, several times. Having developed a relationship with Wexford, his family, and side-kick Michael ...

My continual rantings about Rendell must be getting tiresome
As I'm lazy, I'm just going to copy out the official blurb (plus, I can't say it any better): Jack Pertwee was getting married in the morning. Charlie Hatton drove his lorry eleven hours down from Leeds just to be there. Charlie was Jack's best friend and he would be his best man. When the two parted at the Kingsbrook bridge, jack felt as though his life was just beginning. But for Charlie ...

Inspector Wexford at his best
Fascinating story with many twists and turns. Inspector Wexford faces the challenges of both his personal and professional life with his usual discretion and charm. Highly recommended to all Ruth Rendell readers.

For Starters ...
Starters is the British term for appetizers. And, as the first in the Inspector Wexford series, Rendell does, indeed, present a fine appetizer. FROM DOON WITH DEATH was published in 1964. I got a list of the titles and publication dates of the Wexford books and am hoping to read/reread them in order. I've read a couple published in the 1980's and can see a gorwth/progression with the ...

Rendell Deserves an Encore!
Inspector Wexford finds that this is one of his most challenging cases. In "Death Notes," he is called to investigate the death of noted musician Sir Manuel Camarque, whose body has been found floating in the lake near his country house. Naturally, everyone wants it ruled "accidental death," but Wexford senses that something, indeed, is not right. Two suspects come immediately to his mind: ...

A typical Wexford novel - excellent!
Rendell has done it again! This is a masterful mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. Wexford's beloved Kingsmarkham is a village divided. A new bypass is scheduled to be constructed, and protesters descend on the quiet little town, causing havoc everywhere. Dora Wexford is kidnapped on the way to the train station. Within hours, it becomes apparent that four other people ...

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY...
Ruth Rendell is a fabulous British author who has churned out mystery after mystery filled with dark, demented twists. This is another tautly plotted, well crafted mystery with characters that, though seemingly normal, are just a tad off the beaten path. This book features Martin Urban, a staid and somewhat stuffy young man who would have felt at home in Victorian England. Martin wins a very ...

Love above riches, though the riches follow, too
Making money and a good marriage: the bulwarks of solid middle-class society, and the theme of Trollope's third Barchester novel. The good Dr. Thorne has raised his brother's illegitimate daughter Mary, and she and Frank Gresham fall in love. Unfortunately for Frank his once well-off family is now in desperate straits, and he is implored to "marry money" - which pretty much rules Mary out. He ...

Sharp, focused mystery
Shake Hands For Ever - a novel which takes its title from a work by Michael Drayton - is very much a Wexford novel. There's not a lot of Burden here at all, instead Rendell turns her full attention to the character of Wexford, and his frustration when he comes upon a case which he feels he knows the answer to, but cannot prove. Until, one year after it occurs, new information starts turning up... ...

14th fine Wexford novel
The Veiled One is Rendell's 14th Inspector Wexford mystery, and as excellent as all the rest. The continued quality of this series is remarkable. There have only been one or two slightly lacklustre books in it, and those were very early on in her career. One November evening, Wexford drives him from Barringdean Shopping Centre, noticing nothing amiss. He is preoccupied with family matters. ...

Great Absorbing Mystery, focused on Detective Burden
~ ~ - ~ ~ ~ ~ This was my absolute favorite Ruth Rendell mystery in the Inspector Wexford series. It takes place in about the middle of the Inspector Wexford/ Detective Burden series. But it is not necessary to be familiar with the detectives, as they are briefly introduced to the reader in each book. ~ ~ Detective Mike Burden's wife has just died, and his sister-in-law is staying at his ...

Good Story
The narrator of the CD production of Harm Done that I listened to was Portia Davinia. She did a great job with the voices and accents of the different characters. There are several mysteries (small and big) that Detective Wexford is involved with. Wexford is a clever and kindly man. This was an entertaining listening experience.

A great mystery - circa 1972 - for fans of Inspector Wexford
An interesting story, fun to read... This book is copyright 1972. I wish Amazon would tell you the year of a book's original publication in its data about a book. Sometimes you want to read a an author's work, or (especially) a series, in the order that the books appeared, and with re-issues, Amazon doesn't help you figure the order out... But I digress. Murder being once done: Reg Wexford ...
