S. Harold Collins, Dahna Solar

Signing at School, a good tool for both teachers & students
I purchased this book to use as a text for my daughter to learn sign as her foreign language. The illustrations are very easily understood, and as the title suggests, pertains to the average school day. The chapters include: Finger Alphabet, Asking Questions and Getting Answers, Courtesies and Greetings, Giving Direction, and Words Around School. This book would make an excellent resource ...

Braille for the Sighted (Beginning Braille)18 reviews
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1998

Learned braille in a day - keep in mind that it is for beginners
This book is great for beginners and as the title says for people that can see. I got this book because I was intrigued by the braille that you see on elevators and everything. I really like learning languages and of course the basics is learning the alphabet. This book is great in helping you to do that. I went through the exercises and made flash cards of braille letters. After only a day, ...

An Alphabet of Animal Signs (Beginning Sign Language Series)4 reviews
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 2001

Beautiful book, great signs, wonderful for all ages
This book is wonderful. It is larger than I expected (9 x 7 in.) and the pages are full of very colorful images accompanied by a clear illustration depicting each animal's sign. The book contains 16 pages and those pages are packed with images and signs - one for every letter of the alphabet. A very inexpensive way to add to your signing library. I highly recommend this book.

Advanced Fractions (Advanced Straight Forward Math Series)1 review
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1988

Exellent practice book
I love this advanced fractions workbook! My biggest complaint with other workbooks and texts is not enough practice problems, however, this book is filled with problems to solve. There is a beginning assessment test and a final assessment test. The workbook has a total of 5 sections and each section includes a diagnostic test as well. Beware there are no "how-to" instructions simply practice ...

Classroom management for substitute teachers4 reviews
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1982

Read this first
This manual is an excellent resource for the fledgling substitute. It discusses how to gain the attention of your students quickly and subversively to be able to get on with the business of learning. Also it is full of suggestions on how to report back to the regular teacher.

S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1995

Simple, but has a clear layout, and very fun!
This is a small book, but it has a very clear layout with eleven songs including: If You're Happy, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Bingo, Row, Row Your Boat, The Muffin Man, The Mulberry Bush, London Bridge, Over The River and Through The Woods, Tell Me Why, She'll Be Coming 'Round The Mountain, and The Bear Went Over the Mountain. A Word in the Hand Book One: An Introduction to Sign Language (Sign Language Materials)1 review
Jane Kitterman, S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1984

sign language help
I have been using this book for the past year to teach grade school students and adult sign. I have found that it is easy for both to use and the lessons easy to understand except I think they could use points about facial expressions and the deaf community.

Can I Help?: Helping the Hearing Impaired in Emergency Situations (Beginning Sign Language) (Signed English)2 reviews
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1993

Reasonable Introduction
This book provides a reasonable introduction to sign language. There are lots of pictures demonstrating the different signs used in case a situation occurs where you may have to help a hearing imparied person. The book also includes pictures of the actual alphabet in sign language. This is a good introduction, however if you are somebody interested in learning sign language itself, I would ...

Fountain of Youth1 review
S. Harold Collins

Topeka Bindery, 1999

A nice children's story
This is a short picture about an elderly couple who find a fountain of youth. It is accompanied by sign language illustrations of the story. These are in pidgin signed English (American Sign Language signs in English word order). It is a fun way for children to learn some ASL vocabulary, but it is not "Sign Language Literature" i.e., it does not represent any kind of traditional story from the ...

Number & Letter Games (Beginning Sign Language Series) (Signed English)2 reviews
S. Harold Collins, Dahna Solar

Garlic Press, 1995

activities are engaging to kids
This book has about 20 activities to do. Most are appropriate for ages 8 and up, although I did some of the games with kids in first grade and they loved it, just had a shorter attention span and might need a little help. The book is small and fits in little hands nicely. The cover is bright and inviting. It's not an expensive book, and I recommend it as a warm up activity as part of a lesson or ...

Sound Hearing1 review
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1992

Sound Hearing
This is an excellent book to understand how various degrees of hearing loss can be for some people. The cassette tape is very beneficial. I have used it when teaching college students who will be working with deaf-blind students and clients. It really helps to understand how even a slight hearing loss can interfer with communication.

Mother Goose in Sign (Beginning Sign Language)3 reviews
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1994

Introduces some basics in a fun way.
While the nursery rhymes "signed" here may not be your most favorite from childhood, they work well for teaching a "hearing" child some basic signs in a fun way. Solomon Grundy gives the days of the week, 30 Days Has September gives the names of the months, Buckle My Shoe gives numbers up to twenty, Crooked Sixpence is fun with lots of repetition to give confidence, and Mother Goose is just for ...

Substitute Ingredients: A Journey Through the Soup, Salad, Main Course and Desert of Subsitute and Classroom ...1 review
S. Harold Collins, Lorraine Wilde-Oswalt

Garlic Press, 1989

Activities -- not classroom management
The book is pretty much as described in the "Editorial Review"; that is, "A collection of imaginative language arts, math, and art activities for grades 3-8. Reproducible master sheets accompany most lessons." Note that the book does not contain any information on classroom management.

Pre-Algebra, Book 1 (Straight Forward Math Series/Book 1)1 review
S. Harold Collins

Garlic Press, 1989

Pre-Algebra, Book 1 (Straight Forward Math Series/Book 1)
A little too simple for the grade it intended.
