Too many spoilers here
Unfortunately, several contributors here behave as if they're turning in "book reports", rather than providing a review. In doing so, they give away too many details, usually without spoiler alerts. Engleby's engaging story should be allowed to unfold without pre-knowledge, and I'm glad I didn't see those reviews before reading the book. I'm certain that you, too, will enjoy it more if ...

THE FATAL ENGLISHMAN: THREE SHORT LIVES.3 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Hutchinson, 1996

The Fatal Englishman : Three Short Lives
This book is definitely worth the read. It traces the lives of 3 individuals. All live life to the full, with passion and ambition. What they have in common is not only their passion and ambition in life but that they all die young. It is an inspiring read to see what they overcame and accomplished in their quest for happiness and perfection in their life space. Read it.

Enthralling... but takes effort.
I found that this novel not only held my attention, but continued to reveal inself more and more as the story evolves. It is certainly not up front about the sybolism and themes, but once given the chance it becomes a story worth examining. Core issues such as WWII, the holocaust, racial and ethnic identification, and personal discovery, are addressed in a well intertwined manner. Through a ...

THE GIRL AT THE LION D'OR20 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Vintage, 1990

Beautifully written and thought provoking.
This story opens with a prologue about three newspaper stories. Two of the stories deal with the demise of two political figures. The third story, very brief, almost lost on the page, deals with an unknown female intruder in the grounds of the prime minister's residence. The newspaper makes the French of the day believe the girl is unimportant, but if Faulks' readers are alert, they will see him ...

Devil May Care (James Bond)55 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Doubleday, 2008

Excellent Bond Book
I have been a Bond fan since I can remember, watching the movies, and reading the Fleming books from the time I was 8 years old. I felt this was much better than some of the more recent and more modern approaches to Bond. I really enjoyed this book, great job, wish Faulks would keep them coming. Great summer read if you like Bond.

A Cast of Notable Writers Escort You to the Hell of War
"The Vintage Book of War Fiction" spans the twentieth century from WWI, The Russian Revolution, The Spanish Civil War, WWII, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War to The Gulf War. The editors, Sebastian Faulks, a journalist and author of Charlotte Gray, and Jorg Hensgen, have done an excellent job of picking a star-studded cast of writers to illuminate the topic of war-Louis-Ferdinand Celine, ...

Birdsong184 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Vintage, 1994

Movie please
I loved this book. The best WW1 account I've ever read. Notably, although I read it primarily for this reason, I enjoyed the first part, centering on the romance, so much that I didn't want to leave that bit. Having said that, once in the trenches it was impelling in a different way. What an amazing movie it would be if produced by the right person. Does any one know Spielberg personally? Send it ...

Human Traces (Vintage International)1 review
Sebastian Faulks

Vintage, 2008

Well researched historical fiction
Although this is not an "easy" read, it is quite fascinating. The integration of the history of psychology with the story line of two fictional pioneers in the field was extremely well done. I have a degree in psychology, yet found myself learning many new things about the bases of current psychological theory, and I completely enjoyed the trouncing of the Oedipal complex and other parameters ...

Human Traces: A Novel7 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Random House, 2006

A winning novel of human insight
Mr. Faulks writes with great intelligence and insight about two young men who pursue their common goal of helping the mentally ill. Two different personalities attempt to work together as one,yet never quite manage. No two people can ever be quite alike no matter how close their personal interests are. Is there anyone so stable and without quirk they are completely qualified to help the ...

Drawing on vast archival resources and featuring a mass of previously unpublished personal testimonies, a unique collection of personal testimonies from the men and women of the Special Operations Executive (SOE)—a secret organization created early in World War II to encourage resistance and carry out sabotage behind enemy lines—is presented in this astounding volume. On Green Dolphin Street: A Novel8 reviews
Sebastian Faulks

Vintage, 2003

Haunting
I found that this book wouldn't let go. I found it hard to pick up another book as this one simply haunted me. His characters, and the era he evoked, became impossible to shake off. Magnificent.
