The Lady in the Car with the Glasses and a Gun7 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Plume, 1997

One of the best murder mysteries I've ever read
As usual, Japrisot creates a character so personable and human, that it is impossible not to care for her. The events are complicated and unpredictable. Japrisot puts the spot light on the main character's weaknesses, letting us underestimate her in every way. But the end holds a surprise.

L'ete meurtrier1 review
Sebastien Japrisot

Folio, 1981

Ne m'appele pas "Pin-Pon"
This is a great book do begin reading in French. The language is very simple, la parole des rues, and the plot is a zinger, though its progression remains natural and expertly done. Each successive voice is distinct and impressive. It is one of the more favorite books I have ever read. Japrisot is the type of storyteller who has such a mastery of his talent that he can lead you into the most ...

Women in Evidence4 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Plume, 2000

If you have any illusions about being a writer...
then read this book. Interesting weaving of plot among many different points of view. The book begins with a man on a beach with the tide coming in. He's laying there wondering if the tide will take his body out to sea after he dies. He can't remember exactly how he got here, and who it was that shot him. Chapter break to a desposition from a woman who tells us what she knows about this ...

A Very Long Engagement: A Novel76 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Picador, 2004

A beguiling, jarring tale of war, love and determination
Wheelchair-bound Mathilde Donnay sets her sights on the past to unravel the mystery of her fiance's death in Japrisot's complex novel of love and human perception. Set in post World War I France, the story opens with a masterfully sardonic description of five soldiers, condemned to die for shooting themslves in the hand, being tumbled into the no-man's land between the French and German ...

Trap for Cinderella7 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Harvill Pr, 1999

the criminal is the victim
A Trap for Cinderella is a masterpiece of fiction. It is the story of a young woman who has lost her identity and continues to lose it as she finds herself deeper and deeper in a morass of passion, greed, bitterness, and sexuality. Each way she turns, she finds a new persona for herself, and new victims. Each shadowy profile she sees of herself is obliterated: she is beautiful, but hated; she ...

One Deadly Summer9 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1981

EXCELLENT TALE OF REVENGE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
The author did an excellent job of weaving the story together, one piece at a time while never losing momentum. Although the main character's desire for revenge stems from events of the past, the reader is never bombarded with backstory and is instead shown backstory through character thoughts when it is necessary and pertinent to the story. Although I cannot say that any of the characters are ...

The Sleeping Car Murders6 reviews
Sebastien Japrisot

Plume, 1997

The first clue is in the title....
This masterfully written novel opens with a terrific scene: the train porter wanders through the cars, picking up the detrius of a long night's travel. He finds a scarf, two raincoats, an umbrella, and a leak in the heating system. Then he finds the corpse and his discovery sets off the usual chain of events: ambulance, police, news reporters. But the title is "The Sleeping-Car Murders": more ...

1030 From Marseille1 review
Sebastien Japrisot

Harvill Pr, 1998

All Aboard!
All but one of the passengers on the Marseille express got off in Paris; Georgette Thomas stayed in her compartment....dead. Her murderer was swift and efficent, striking in the brief interval after the other passengers had left but before the clean-up man went through the train. Robbery was not the motive...all her money was still in her bag. The police had little to go on, but as they found and ...
