Complete Greek Tragedies: Sophocles II3 reviews
Sophocles

Random House Inc (T), 1975

The four non-Theban plays of Sophocles.
"Ajax" is probably the earliest extant play of Sophocles. Sophocles is the earliest known playwright to use painted scenery. He also decreased the importance of the chorus, added a third actor, and abandoned the trilogy format (each play is complete by itself). Ajax is the classical Greek tragedy about the downfall of a man who is sinned against and has a tragic flaw; in this case, insolence ...

Sophocles

Bantam Books, 1971

What Bad Thing Could One Say About The Greatest Tragedian?
This is a most accessible tome of the seven extant plays of the Sophocles . The editor's comments also illumine the reader. If you've never read Sophocles, this inexpensive paperback is all you need to enter the realm of ancient Greece.

Electra and Other Plays (Classics)3 reviews
Sophocles

Penguin Classics, 1953

very good translation
This version of Sophocles plays Electra, Ajax, Philoctetes and Women of Trachis is one of the best I"ve found. I was basicly looking for an acting version, and Waitings verse is both telling, beautiful and flowing. It tells the story without plodding or stumbling. Very good. By the way, the cover says Penguin Classic.

Antigone (Greek Tragedy in New Translations)3 reviews
Sophocles

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

An impressive new translation of Sophocles' "Antigone"
Following the ending of "Oedipus the King," Oedipus was exiled from Thebes, blind and a beggar. We learn from "Oedipus at Colonus" that his sons, Eteocles and Polyneices engaged in a civil war for the throne of Thebes (covered in "Seven Against Thebes" by Aeschylus). The two brothers kill each other and Kreon, brother of Jocasta, becomes king. He orders that Eteocles, who nobly defended his city, ...

Oedipus Tyrannus - Power and Clarity for a Modern Audience
I first stumbled across this edition whilst searching the web for an acting edition of Oedipus to use with my Year Eleven Drama class. Once I received this edition I was so pleased that I had taken the gamble to purchase it. For anyone searching for an 'acting' rather than 'literary' edition of Oedipus, I would strongly suggest that you have a close look at this publication. Peter Meineck and ...

Sophocles, Volume I. Ajax. Electra. Oedipus Tyrannus (Loeb Classical Library No. 20)5 reviews
Sophocles

Loeb Classical Library, 1994

Worth the investment.
If you haven't read anything by Sophocles and want to read him for fun, I'd suggest getting the Fagles translations of the Theban plays, followed by the Sophocles II volume published by University of Chicago. That will get you every complete play we have by him and is a good way to start. However, if you've read one (or even all) of the plays in this volume, know some Greek, and want to go a ...

Antigone1 review
Sophocles

Prestwick House, Inc., 2005

Essential reading for a classical education
I read Sophocles Antigone for graduate Humanities class. It is an essential reading to understand Greek Tragedy. It is also a foundation stone of literature in studying Western Civilization. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus in 3-cycle play, faces capital punishment for burying her brother who rebelled against Thebes. Obeying instincts of loyalty of love and the divine law, she defies Creon, ...

Oedipus Rex - Literary Touchstone Edition3 reviews
Sophocles

Prestwick House, Inc., 2005

A student friendly edition of the paradigmatic Greek tragedy
"Oedipus Rex" is not only the most read Greek tragedy, it is also the most misread. The play's reputation exists in part because it is presented as the paradigmatic example of the Greek tragedy by no less an authority than Aristotle in his "Poetics." No doubt this reputation played a part it making it one of the relatively few plays by Sophocles that has been preserved from ancient times. ...

Oedipus Tyrannus - a New Translation: Passages from Ancient Authors - Religion And Psychology (A Norton ...2 reviews
Sophocles

W W Norton & Co Inc (Np), 1970

As modern today as it was in Ancient Greece
We read this classic outloud in my high school class this year and my students could not believe how modern the themes were. Everyone can relate to the detective element (many critics claim this as the first true detective plot), the search for truth, the irony (the very definition of dramatic irony is Oedipus) and the gripping plot. I would also like to add that as always the Norton ...

The Complete Greek Tragedies, Volume 2: Sophocles (Complete Greek Tragedies)5 reviews
Sophocles

University Of Chicago Press, 1992

Fundamental
This is Volume II of a four volume set "The Complete Greek Tragedies" (Volume I is Aeschylus, Volumes III and IV are Euripides). Like the other volumes, _Sophocles_ is a handsomely bound hardcover with stylized Greekish images interspersed throughout and one on the cover (in this case, a golden hoplite). _Sophocles_ is light on interpretative materials -- no footnotes and only a brief essay ...

Optimal Signal Processing1 review
Sophocles J. Orfanidis

Free Press, 1985

One of the best books on optimal signal processing
This is an outstanding and often overlooked book on optimal signal processing. I have read the classic texts by Haykin which is good, but I enjoyed reading this book more. The author does an excellent job relating the filtering problem to optimization in linear spaces and then shows how this is related to the optimal correlation canceller. This approach is justified since correlation cancelling ...

Sophocles' Antigone: A New Version1 review
Sophocles

Bloodaxe Books, 1996

Sophocles' "Antigone" is really the tragedy of King Creon
Following the ending of "Oedipus the King," Oedipus was exiled from Thebes, blind and a beggar. We learn from "Oedipus at Colonus" that his sons, Eteocles and Polyneices engaged in a civil war for the throne of Thebes (covered in "Seven Against Thebes" by Aeschylus). Greek Tragedy (Drama Classic: Collections S.)1 review
Sophocles, Euripides

Nick Hern Books, 2005

Excellent Intro to Greek Tragedy, Without Being Overwhelming
I wanted to buy a book containing a representative sample of the three extant ancient Greek tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripedes) as a gift. It was either this one or the Bantam collection edited by Moses Hadas - a mass market edition. I'd read the Bantam one, and it contains a number of the plays by each, plus an Aristophenes comedy, in a perhaps slightly stiff translation. It was ...

SOPHOCLES ELECTRA AND OTHER PLAYS (PENGUIN CLASSICS)1 review
WATLING E F (TRANSLATOR) SOPHOCLES

PENGUIN, 1954

From the Back Cover
This volume contains four plays by Sophocles (496-406 B.C.), who was the first to give to ancient Greek drama a structure recognizably related to its modern descendant. In "Electra" he objectively presents part of the Orestean legend, while "Women of Trachis" is remarkable for the human verisimilitude imparted to a near-repulsive piece of mythology. "Philoctetes" portrays the struggles of right ...

Oedipus the King1 review
Sophocles

Pocket Books (WSP), 1972

Oedipus: The Hero in Disguise
Oedipus the King is the story of a `doom born man' . His fate was one of vial, immoral acts, unknowingly committed while trying to escape his destiny. And while Oedipus' life is scrutinized and chastised in front of thousands that submit to his rule, his intentions are never considered. The fact that he tried to avoid his fate was never taken into thought when the townsfolk hid their eyes and ...
