Great Tuning Reference
I have been tuning SQL Server databases for some time, and have not seen such a good reference short of the Inside SQL Server series originated by Ron Soukup. I strongly recomend this book for everyone creating or maintaining an enterprise database.

From a Beginner
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to sql 2000. I am a Network/Systems Engineer/Consultant. Most the environments I have worked in have dedicated staff acting as DBA's. In these environments the cultish status of the DBA camp has always left me wondering what do and how they do it. Basically a wizards how-to-book.
This book does nothing more than teaches one how to use the Oracle wizards to create tables, users, etc... If your new to Oracle, you should learn the syntax of the command lines even thought your in a NT environmet.

Considering the difficulty of the topic, this book is a fairly easy read. The single best thing about the book is that the advice is actionable. You can read this book and immediately begin tuning. Coverage is excellent - performance tuning, capacity planning, setting up disk drives, managing cpu, I/O, network, and memory, index tuning, backups, replication, OLTP versus OLAP, etc. For each ...
