"Life's too far in the future to think about. Right now, I could use a good cigar."
In a strange and very perverse sense, it might just be appropriate that the appallingly awful HTD movie is Howard's predominant image in the public eye. Why, you ask? Well, I reply, because Howard himself was never really understood or appreciated by the world around him; that's the entire point. (And yeah, I wish the movie had been better, too. I'm just choosing to enjoy the irony.) The ...

Defending good taste in comic books
Essential Defenders Volume II: from the very start (the confrontation with Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in issues 15 and 16, by far the best ones there) to the ending (Tapping Tommy and the Maggia goons in issue 30) it's a hit!!! Fine storytelling and artwork (especially by a certain Mr. Buscema), rather interesting characters and the "non-team status" that made this a supergroup ...

Among the Best Comics of All Time ...
What can I say ... the short series collected in this volume has a real woman for the lead character, vivid characterisation, heaps of intelligence, a sharp critique of modern society and humanity in general, and an exposition of an existentialist, yet non-materialist philosophy unlike anything you'll find elsewhere in comics. The fantastic milieu of Las Vegas and alternate dimensions is ...

The best book that you aren't reading
Hard Time was launched as part of a new comic line under DC comics, the Focus imprint. It was one of three books when it was released, now it's the only one left. There's a reason for that, this book is incredible. It's Oz meets Superman, Oz meets My So Called Life, well, actually, any comparisson is going to go to Oz because this is the only prison drama currently in comics. The main ...

This volume contains Harlan Ellison's classic Hulk stories. If you're a fan of either Old School Marvel, or the brilliant futurist/SF writer Ellison, then give it a try!

The year of the Zombie
The sad and tragic tale of Simon William Garth, the Zombie, started in the fifties when comic book legends Stan Lee and Bill Everett created the undead character for Atlas's horror comic Menace. Newsstands were flooded with a wave of horror titles like Tales from the Crypt, Black Cat, Weird and Dick Briefer's horrific classic The Monster of Frankenstein. All of which fell victim of the newly ...

excellent
The comic starts off slowly, repetitively, but soon flowers into an existential, anarchic,nihilist-naive, neo primitivist landscape, which prefigures and pre empts and "pre imagines" Charles Burns "Black Hole" and aspects of Alan Moore by decades. The action takes place in a swamp -- a secluded place, a dank,, threatening, yet pure place, untouched by the corruption of man -- yet it's a ...

Welcome to the time when Giant(-Size)s walked the Earth!
While I have not been impressed with the majority of Marvel's choices for their recent "high-quality" format (aka: overpriced) trade paperbacks, GIANT-SIZE MARVEL is a welcome addition to the ranks. You'll shell out some dough for this one, but you know what? It's actually worth it. For a `70s Marvel zombie like myself, this trade paperback is pure candy, as it collects a good chunk of the ...

Witty? You Don't Need to Look VeryFar!!!
Howard the Duck to me was a movie. A very bad, dumb, never should have been made movie. Howard the Duck in real life is a comic book produced by Marvel Comics that first appeared in the 1970s. A comic so successful, it burn out into cancellation. And it took people some 30 years to bring back the foul mouthed mallard back into the foray in he MAX line of adult comics produced these days by ...

Captain America's Wild Ride In The 70's
This 4th Captain America Essential collection has it all. From Werewolves to President Nixon, Cap takes on all comers. This book also includes the Nomad saga and The Falcon is right by Cap's side throughout. I have always liked the artwork of Sal Buscema and he pulls out all the stops during this run. Lots of fun and a great buy for only $11.55.

Omnibus in color (Essential in black and white)
I purchased the Essential Howard the Duck and was bummed that the book ended before the story played out, and the art was black and white. So I ordered Howard The Duck Omnibus and got the whole story in color. If you want to read Howard The Duck, get the Omnibus.

This is the good stuff!
After a long wait, Marvel finally publishes the "meat" of Steve Gerber's run on Defenders. When people talk about Gerber as being the 'Grant Morrison of the 70s' (as they do, occasionally), this is the sort of stuff they're talking about. Gerber is mostly remembered today for his quirky work on non-superhero titles like Man-Thing, Howard the Duck and Omega the Unknown. But this volume shows ...

Surprisingly good.
This volume could be suspected of being solely for completists, since it reprints little-known short stories from Marvel's many horror mags. In fact, before reading it, I feared it might feel like a lot of inventory material. I was quite happy to be proven wrong. Editorial care was taken to present these stories in chronological order, giving them a biographical flavor (we follow Dracula from ...

This TPB brings together a good number of either first sightings, origins or other important stories that have been in Marvels books over the years. Lots of great stories I recall reading when first published, and now great to have in a convenient book. SteveZ

Gerber's best
Having read almost all of Steve Gerber's work for Marvel, DC, and the short-lived Malibu (during the early 90's comic boom), I can safely say that although Omega the Unknown was abruptly cancelled with no solid or worthy ending (written by Steven Grant rather than Steve Gerber), it is one of the best pieces of comic literature I've experienced. Steve Gerber put himself on the comics map with his ...

Keep the faith
Is there rhyme or reason to this tale, or was mayhem and madness the driving force behind this magical mystery tour? A few units of psychology would be helpful for sorting through the maze of lost souls set adrift in a sea of confusion, delusion, and illusion among the neon lights of Las Vegas. The surreal storyline spans the spectrum from sage sermonizing to sophisticated psychobabble, with our ...

Graphic SF Reader
Colan soap opera slugfest. The attraction in picking this up is of course Gene Colan's work, which, while shadowy, is certainly a lot more realistic of figure than that produced today. The storyline for a lot of this is quite long, which your shadowy master villain or villains, sending a stream of low-rent villains DD's way. Lots of fighting for him. Plenty of on panel angst about ...

A book burns on amazon
At last, the rest of Steve Gerber's superb run on Man-Thing is out in the essential format. The first half of this book really is essential, as it showcases some of Gerber's best work on this strip, including the classic stories 'The Kids's Night Out' & 'A Book Burns in Citrusville' ( dealing with school bullying & censorship respectively ). Most fun is Steve's last script on the regular series ...

If you are a Marvel comics fan this is superb value for money. You get 29 episodes (although some stories run over more than one episode) featuring The Thing with a variety of other Marvel superheroes. The Hulk, Sub Mariner, Dr Strange, Daredevil, Captain America, Thor, Iron-Man and many others battle alongside, and occasionally against, Ben Grimm in these stories. The artwork as always is ...
