Global Ethnography: Forces, Connections, and Imaginations in a Postmodern World1 review
Michael Burawoy, Joseph A. Blum, ...

University of California Press, 2000

EXCERPT REVIEW
Having only read a few excerpts from this book about unemployment, homelessness and mental illness I have attempted to compare my own observations with those of some of the contributors. Much of the homelessness I see in my own Ontario city is due to the embrace of community mental health by the provincial government in the early seventies as a cost-saving mearsure in response to the unionization ...

The Soloist (Movie Tie-In): A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music95 reviews
Steve Lopez

Berkley Trade, 2008

Exploring the heart and mind of the homeless and mentally ill
Writer Steve Lopez comes across a homeless street musician playing surprisingly-well-rendered renditions of classical pieces on a 2-string violin to the accompaniment of city traffic, car horns and the screams of the mentally ill. Lopez wonders how such a talented man, Nathaniel Ayers, could have come to be on the streets. Through his LA Times newspaper columns and eventually this book, Lopez ...

In the Clear2 reviews
Steve Lopez, 2002

Insomnia
He always loved the jazzed up feeling when he walked into a casino. This story of the New Jersey seashore is a keeper. Steve Lopez does a good job catching the way local people speak. In a sense Albert LaRosa grew up in the display window of his father's hardware store. Sheriff Albert LaRosa receives an offer to participate in a casino venture. He tells his long time girl friend who ...

Third and Indiana
I recently attended a graduate class and heard this novel being discussed by high school teachers. Though the content and language are not appropriate for me (el ed), I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a consistently engaging read. I also saw many levels in the characters, and loved the foreshadowing and imagery. We live about 45 minutes away from Philadelphia and I was curious to see how ...

Batman: Venom11 reviews
Dennis O'Neil, Trevor Von Eeden, ...

DC Comics, 1993

Brutal, fascinating, perfect
These are all words that describe Batman: Venom. After Batman fails to save a little girl from drowning before his very eyes, he begins to question his abilities. The little girl's father has the perfect solution, a new designer steroid called Venom that will build Batman's muscles as he sits doing detective work. He begins taking it with strictly good intentions, but soon finds himself turning ...

Sunday Macaroni Club8 reviews
Steve Lopez

Penguin USA

A Rare, Great Book
This is one of those books that actually makes you feel for the characters. It revolves around a small-time politician and his devoted assistant/henchman. The tone it's written in, and the blend of humor and pathos will make is a very special experience for anyone who reads it. I read it three years ago and still remember scenes and lines in it. I wish Steve Lopez would write more books.

This book provides such incredible insight into the world of people who suffer from mental illness. Everyone should read this book so that the stigma that comes with mental illness can be eliminated. Knowledge is power.

Road to Perdition: On the Road v. 230 reviews
Max Allan Collins, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, ...

Titan Books Ltd, 2005

You must choose a road for yourself.
This is a great black and white "noir" graphic novel. There was a Road to Perdition based on it, which you may have seen. The book is better, in my opinion. It is masterfully written, and the art is great. It's almost 300 pages long, but it just flies by. Highly recommended.

Land of Giants: Where No Good Deed Goes Unpunished2 reviews
Steve Lopez

Camino Books, 1995

Unforgettable snapshots of life in urban America.
Steve Lopez hits another home run with this non-fiction work: a collection of his best columns from the Philadelphia Inquirer. Reporter Steve Lopez left the sunny doldrums of CA to find real, old-fashioned greed and corruption worthy of his investigative writing. You can accompany this great writer through the streets of Philadelphia, the suburbs and beyond through his hilarious, touching, ...
