THE NEW BIBLE FOR ILLUSTRATORS - A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR LIBRARY!!!!
Steven Heller & Marshall Arisman's guidance is invaluable in today's market, this book is a must have for the struggling professional or for the newly graduate seeking to stake their claim. In fact I'd go so far as to say this book SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING at every art school in the country offering illustration courses. First let me say that for those of you reading this review who don't ...

Sagmeister Always Rocks
Like his first book, this one is filled with clever design details and insights into his process. Unlike the typical designer, Sagmeister speaks of his process in terms that more are akin to self-improvement and self-analysis and than technique, giving us plebians insight into how the master works. A must for any design oficionado.

The title could've been "The Evolution of Design"
This is a great book, especially for referencing. Beautifully designed! As for the title I truely believe "The Evolution of Design" would've been more appropriate, especially while referencing to the earliest documents containing that particular object, artifact or style and its transcendence to what the subjects' conceived graphic design has "evolved" to. True as stated in the preface, "These ...

an eye opener, coca cola and nazi germany: two strong brands
Steven Heller's "Iron Fists" makes a sophisticated and visually arresting comparison between modern corporate-branding strategies - slogans, mascots, jingles and the rest - and those adopted by "four of the most destructive 20th-century totalitarian regimes": Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, and Mao's China. As he pursues his four "case studies," Heller, by ...

Monsters and Magical Sticks
This is a very cool book about inducing Hypnosis where "traditional" inductions fail. It is directed at hypnosis professionals, but certainly an interesting read to anybody interested in the phenomenon it is to many. First, Steve wrote it in a very relaxed and sometimes funny way. It is laced with examples of his own experience where his unconventional approach worked with subjects that ...

Great book depending upon your interest
I do agree with the previous reviewer that this book does not have practical advice in terms of performing graphic design related duties. There are plenty of books out there that you can acquire that will outline the process of designing, design elements etc... such as "The Elements of Graphic Design" by Alex. W. White. However, this book as its sub-title clearly states is "A Guide to ...

Like all Taschen books, a beauty
This book was a trip down memory lane for me; I got a kick out those lurid men's-magazine covers in my youth, and today I get... well, a surge of nostalgia, if no longer quite the same charge. The volume is beautifully produced, like all Taschen books, though I have to add that I find it no better than a similar compendium of men's-mag art called IT'S A MAN'S WORLD, which came out six months ...

Dave Vogler's essay is hilarious!
Designer David Vogler always contributes to these design books churned out by Mr. Heller. And once again, Vogler has cooked up a hilarious editorial that thumbs it's nose at the industry while making valid observations. This is worth the cover price alone. My staff laffed out loud.

The Education of an Illustrator

Interesting and thought provoking
The entire book is made up of articles written by various established illustrators. I found the sections on art direction and education extremely interesting. Included are sample course syllabii which is helpful if you are teaching illustration courses. The part that I had a problem (maybe that's too strong a word) with was the section on the state of the illustration market today. To me, it ...

Historic Essays
This is the latest in a series of books that consist of collections of essays about the theory and practice of graphic design. The essays in the first two volumes were mostly from contemporary sources, particularly the AIGA Journal of Graphic Design. This third, retrospective volume is of even greater value in the sense that it gathers under one cover some of the most important historic ...

a diverse and complete collection of graphic design that merges the handwritten with the computer
Heller and Ilic's book is a collection of exemplary work in the world of graphic design in which the "handwritten" has been implemented in the artists' works. Examples range from magazine covers, traditional advertisements, film festival posters, album covers, book covers and other media/art. There is a wide range of styles covered, and though there is not a lot of text that accompanies each ...

Essential in a photographer's library
I'm only halfway through and can only ask why such a book only surfaces now. Previous concise compilations of writings on photography concentrated on the mediums origins and historical figures. This one gives us a more contemporary context (ie the 50ies) and goes on from there until today, focusing on the ideas of key figures. Thank you editors!

Excellent book
This book is an insightful collection of essays and manifestos which respond to First Things First 2000. The editors have done a marvelous job of including numerous viewpoints and introducing some new players to the field of critical writing on graphic design. It makes a great addition to the Looking Closer series and would be good reading for any serious graphic designer.

US Citizenship for Dummies
My wife ordered this book for herself after checking out several different books that her friends were using. This book is the most complete in terms of the information available under one cover -- it also proves easy to understand and utilize for someone who has learned English as their second language.
