The High Flyer30 reviews
Susan Howatch

Little, Brown, 1999

A Spiritual Hospital in Action
Once again Howatch manages to blend western medicine, psychology and spiritual healing in the setting of St. Benet's Healing Centre. This novel has less psycho babble than Wonder Worker and has a strong, suspensful plot, all told from the perspective of the main character, Carter Graham. It is refreshing to see Nicholas, Alice and Lewis from Carter's perspective. There is also the addition ...

Glittering Images Glamorous Powers
Susan Howatch

Diamond Books an Imprint of Harper Row, 1994

Now in one volume, the first and second in Susan Howatch's acclaimed series of novels; compelling, searching, wise and witty, they have gained her a huge following.

Scandalous Risks9 reviews
Susan Howatch

Fontana Press, 1991

Howatch does it again!
In the fourth of the Starbridge books Howatch does it again - she proves her amazing versatility as a writer of fiction by giving us a completely new character in a completely new voice and a completely new style. It never ceases to amaze me how Howatch, in each case, actually BECOMES the narrator! Whereas the elderly churchman Jon Darrow of Glamorous Powers (for instance) speaks in a rather ...

Cashelmara16 reviews
Susan Howatch

Simon & Schuster, 1974

A good story told well
This is the kind of book I love--- involved, lots of interesting charactors, a story that is believable and makes one want to keep reading. The middle of the book gets into a subject that was not mentioned much in other books I have read that were written in the mid 70's, and I was surprised when the plot took that turn, although the hints were there from the first. I just wasn't expecting the ...

Sins of the Fathers6 reviews
Susan Howatch

Pan, 1981

another great book
Cornelius is evil, because he is amoral. He does not know the difference between right and wrong He seeks always to bend the present and future to his design and his only weak spot is the past and the memory of Dinah Slade who's destiny he could not control . The point of Cornelius is precisel that he is unaware of his evilnedss and he serves as an example to us all of the corrupting poewer ...

Absolute Truths14 reviews
Susan Howatch

Fawcett, 1996

Absolutely satisfying
Although this is the last book in the Starbridge series it is actually set in time before its immediate prequel, Mystical Paths. Howatch obviously had good reasons for doing this; no other book could have rounded up the series so perfectly, and certainly it was a delight to return to Chares Ashworh as narrator, who began the whole series. This time Charles is at the evening of his life. He has ...

Glamorous Powers8 reviews
Susan Howatch

HarperCollins, 1988

the best of thr lot
The second in the series of Starbridge books - Glamorous Powers - is the one I liked the best. IN this book we get to know Jon Darrow, who figured in the first volume Glittering Images as Charles Ashworth's spiritual director, more intimately. Whereas in Glamorous powers, seen through Charles Ashworth's eyes, he was the perfect super priest who knew everything, here we actually get under Jon's ...

Penmarric12 reviews
Susan Howatch

Simon & Schuster, 1971

I must have read this five or six times!
This is a book that I bought years ago when I was looking for something trashy and escapist. I think it was the cover art on the edition I bought that led me to believe it would be a typical historical bodice ripper, or something of that sort. Instead, it was a book I kept going back to again and again because of the character development, the writing and the plot. I really connected with the ...

The Shrouded Walls1 review
Susan Howatch

Pan Books, 1973

Great gothic
I really enjoyed this Susan Howatch book. Despite the formulaic plot, the characterisation of the heroine and the hero are slightly out of the ordinary. In the midst of the murders and detection, the romance is nicely developed. The heroine is quite young and childish but the hero, Axel is approriately mysterious! A well written Gothic read and the only historical one out of the six short novels ...

The Rich are Different9 reviews
Susan howatch

Simon & Schuster, 1977

Howatch is wonderfull
Howatch puzzles me, her novels look like run of the mill pulp fiction best sellers to judge by the covers but once you start to read them you discover a formidable intelligance. Why doesn't this author have the reputation her skills entitle her to, she is easly up there with Drabble, Murdoch and other Doyens of the British novel.

The Dark Shore/Audio Cassettes4 reviews
Susan Howatch

Chivers Audio Books, 1989

nice surprise
Expecting this older mystery to be dated and predictable, I was agreeably surprised at finding it engaging and, well, mysterious. Sometimes the outcomes in older books are ridiculously easy to foresee, but The Dark Shore kept me guessing most of the way through. The descriptions of Cornwall are good, and Howatch is a skilled writer, one who improved over time but was never half bad. Enjoyable.

Mystical Paths6 reviews
Susan Howatch

Fawcett, 1993

Conflict, replicas, and "The Dark!"
Susan Howatch once again shows brilliance in characterisation, expression of spiritual truths, and integration of Jungian psychology in creating this strange and rather macabre picture of conflict, intensity, and the darkness of deception. While the plot has notable deficiencies, particularly in some major scenes in the last quarter of the action, the author manages to present a deep and ...

The Wonder Worker (Ballantine Reader's Circle)23 reviews
Susan Howatch

Ballantine Books, 1998

Fiction for the Thinking Christian
Most of the action in this novel occurs in a healing center, where two priests, a physician, social worker, counselor and several volunteers work. This is an unusual and intriguing setting. Howatch, through the crises of the various characters, is able to portray the connection between body and soul and explores the deeper meaning of healing. Healing is almost always a process. I ...

The Wheel of Fortune20 reviews
Susan Howatch

Pan Books, 1985

let the music begin! The Blue Danube!
If I had to name a favourite author, it would have to be Susan Howatch; her novels never fail to delight me and nourish my need for stories that do more than entertain. And if I had to choose a favourite Susan Howatch novel, it would have to be the Wheel of Fortune. This sumptuous novel drew me in from the very first page and soon I was lost in richness, following the drama of the Godwin family ...

The Heartbreaker: A Novel18 reviews
Susan Howatch

Ballantine Books, 2005

Susan Howatch does it again
Great characters that stay with you. It's been a few years since I read the last installment of her Church of England books, but I could remember enough about the characters to easily pick up the story in Heartbreaker. Gavin Blake calls himself a "leisure worker," and lives his life encased in multiple layers of denial. The two voices in the book are Gavin's and Carta Graham's (from High ...

Ultimate Prizes8 reviews
Susan Howatch

Fontana Press, 1990

Where potential meets conflict - excellent characterisation
For all that the plots of her novels tend to cross the border to melodrama, Susan Howatch's gift for characterisation, and for the integration of superb spiritual insight (into the dialogue, if not the lives of the individuals depicted!) is impeccable. Neville Aysgarth, whose commitment and faith are unquestionable, is an odd but interesting blend of hard sense and the ability to create a ...
