A Fine Catalog of the Wyeth Family in America Reappears
In 1987 there was a traveling exhibition, AN AMERICAN VISION: THREE GENERATIONS OF WYETH ART, that was accompanied by a beautiful hardcover book by the same name. Fortunate for art lovers that catalog, having passed through a paperback phase, is once again appearing on the shelves of book stores and museums. It is a treasure worth seeking. Presented with a fine overview by James H. Duff the book ...

Read and re-read!
I read this book when it came out many years ago and my copy has been read and re-read many times over the years. It's a great non fiction book about an ivory cross that the former director of the Met found and pursued and finally purchased, after many setbacks and frustrations along the way. It brings you into the world of art, history, museums and museum directors and brings it all to life. ...

Sharpen your eye for art-- and have fun doing it!
This is a wonderful book for art buffs and and novices alike. As Hoving says in the introduction, it's based off of a game that curators often played together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each identification "challenge" comes with a brief biography of the artist and unusual fact/perspective on the piece or its depiction, and the book's unique format helps me remember (and want to share) ...

Dancing to the mummies' tune
This lively look at the life and work of a director of a world-class art museum not only educates and entertains, it shocks. The mummies do, indeed, dance as Thomas Hoving takes on the Park Service to expand the museum, wiggles around UNESCO and fights a host of governments for his favorite works of art, plays one collection against another, trades, deals and bluffs his way toward making the ...

one of the best
My teacher introduced me to Andrew Wyeth's paintings and drawings about a year or two ago. I've been in love with his work ever since. It's just how beautiful his linework is and how he brings life to the paintings. That is so incredibly rare. There are plenty of portrait artists out there, but I can't think of one that impresses me as much as he does. I think this is because of how well he knew ...

the basic Wyeth companion
I found this book at friends' at least fifteen years ago, then I immediately ordered several other copies from the Metropolitan Museum in order to give them to the people I loved most. It introduced me to AW (unfortunately almost unknown in Europe) and to his unique vision as a contemporary painter, which reminded me of the same kind of emotion I had some time before, by viewing Terrence ...

Wyeth: from sketch to completion, insightful and informative
If you want a better understanding of Wyeth's artistic process, this book is definitely for you. Wyeth's thoughtful and informative insights into the creation of his art are the reason this book is important. Despite Hoving's fawning and questions that lack depth, the book is a marvelous look at this artist's approach to a variety subjects. Wyeth explains with passion and depth why he chose ...

Diverting Romp Through the Art World
I have read and loved most of Thomas Hoving's nonfiction work, False Impressions, Making the Mummies Dance, etc. and loved it, but I was hesitant to try out his fiction. Now I'm glad I did. Sometimes over the top but almost always a diverting romp through the New York art scene that I love so much!
American Gothic : The Biography of Grant Wood's American Masterpiece

Insightful and fun
While I agree about the typos and bad photo reproduction (which are the publisher's fault, not the author's), the insights to this famous painting, the reactions to it, and Grant Wood himself make for some excellent text. It's a very quick and fun read.

Art in the environment
I recently walked round the Rockefeller Center to look at all the public art and this lovely little paperback was invaluable. Without it I doubt you will find the eighty or so works of art in the book that are on walls everywhere even though the majority are on exteriors. Items like Lee Lawrie's Atlas statue or the stunning Wisdom wall-relief are well-known but how many visitors realise that ...

Superior to all other Tutankhamun related books
Thomas Hoving wrote a great book. He made you feel like you were in the tomb with Howard Carter spectating. His discriptions of the events that happened kept you on the edge. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to know the truth about the events that happened surrounding the discovery of Tut's tomb and the scandalous behavior of those involved.
