The Best Biography of Stanley
Years ago I stumbled on a book of fiction about Stanley's captaining of the ill-fated relief mission to "save" Emin Pasha in the late 1880's. I simply couldn't believe that what I was reading about the horrors of the journey were real, so began by reading my first Stanley biography. The horrors were real, and the courage required of African explorers was almost beyond imagination. Stanley, ...

If Only Our Novelists Could Write So Well
Jeal's biography became an instant classic upon publication some years ago. It is doubtful that Livingstone will ever be so fully portrayed, "warts and all," as the saying goes. Quite apart from the life depicted, this biography is a work of art. The prose is gorgeous, quite simply among the best biographies of the decade. One is simultaneously gripped and repelled by the author's extraordinary ...

Swimming with My Father: A Memoir
Tim Jeal
Faber & Faber
, 2004
This is a tender portrait of childhood, growing up, and of a father who was uniquely English eccentric. From his own embarrassing schoolboy meeting with T.S. Eliot to his father's struggle with Parkinson's, it is a lovingly composed, honest exploration of the past.

One Scouter's review of an honest biography of the founder.
Jeal has written an authoritative and well researched biography of the Chief Scout of the World. His style is extremely readable and he seeks to avoid conclusions. He treats the rumors of BP being a homosexual openly (the rumors, not BP). His biography is overall very positive but not fawning. I highly recommend it to any Scout leader.
