The Vanishing Pumpkin8 reviews
Tony Johnston

Oxford Univ Pr (T), 1983

Great story, great illustrations!
What a sense of fun that pervades this delightful, magical story involving old folks, wizards, ghouls, and one big pumpkin! Written by Tony Johnston and illustrated by the inimitable Tomie dePaola, this is a winning Halloween story. "There was a 700-year-old-woman. There was an 800-year-old man. They were rocking by the fire as the sun came up." I know old folks (and I mean old folks in this ...

Quilt Story (Portals to Reading Jr.: Reading Skills through Literature)8 reviews
Tony Johnston

Perfection Learning, 1997

The Quilt Story
This is a wonderful story to share with children. It tells a history story. It shows how much love and time it takes to make a quilt. It shows how different generations view the importance of a quilt. It just isn't for keeping warm. My day care children loved how much the mother's cared for the children by making or repairing the quilt. My day care children and I made a quilt for our day ...

Yonder5 reviews
Tony Johnston

Dial, 1991

A beautiful portrait of one family's "circle of life"
Yonder provides children with a charming, vivid image of life, with its joys and its sorrows. The story of a farmer and his wife as they raise their family is mirrored in the growth of the beautiful plum tree outside their home. With vibrant, Impressionistic illustrations, this is an enchanting story that gently introduces children to the beauty and reality of the circle of life.

Clear Moon, Snow Soon3 reviews
Tony Johnston

Rising Moon Books, 2001

A quiet read for young children waiting for Santa Claus.
Holiday books come and go, but Clear Moon, Snow Soon should become part of your Christmas reading shelf, especially if you have young children. The winter blue cover with the hologram title is lovely and an invitation of beautiful illustrations inside. The reader is not disappointed. Illustrator, Guy Porfirio, has captured the wonderlust that a young boy has while waiting for Santa. Rich, ...

The Whole Green World4 reviews
Tony Johnston

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2005

A True Treasure!
The Whole Green World is an absolute gem of a book. The text is clever and charming and the illustrations are simply exquisite! Together, Tony Johnston and Elisa Kleven have created a world that every child -- and grown-up -- will want to leap right into. A cozy, comfy and colorful world made even more beautiful by a child committed to spreading the beauty of nature around "the whole green ...

The Wagon3 reviews
Tony Johnston

HarperCollins Publishers, 1996

Born a slave, a boy is freed at the end of the Civil War.
A twelve year old boy experiences the joy and pain of freedom when the Civil War ends, he and his family are set free, and Lincoln is assassinated. The cadence of the language evokes the rhythm of a spiritual and the illustrations provide rich interpretation of the story. Winner of the Simon Wiesenthal Children's Book Award, The Wagon is a valuable addition to school libraries. The quiet ...

The Green Gourd: A North Carolina Folktale3 reviews
Tony Johnston

Putnam Juvenile A Whitebird Book, 1992

Bewitching :)
The Green Gourd is hilarious. I enjoyed reading it because the dialect was fun to do. The kids adored the silliness of a "witchy green gourd" chasing the old lady and "fumping" everything on the way. We both loved the illustrations. I love this book so much that I'm going to see if I can locate a used copy (it's out of print). Someday I'd like to read it to my grandchildren.

That Summer4 reviews
Tony Johnston

Harcourt Children's Books, 2002

Life, Love, and Loss.....
"That summer began like always, with hoots and shouts, all of us running in the sun, freed from school..." But, as his brother, the narrator tells us, on the fourth of July, Joey "took sick." He went to bed and stayed there. When he perked up, the whole family was filled with hope, and when he got worse again, they realized the awful truth. "What do you do when you know you are leaving the ...

Grab the kids, head for the sofa and let the gigglefest begin. "Gopher Up Your Sleeve" is pure joy that will have your children laughing out loud and squealing with delight as they master the singsong poems. Voice from Afar: Poems of Peace2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Holiday House, 2008

Beautiful and Meaningful for Every Age
In this world of ours so maimed by war, Tony Johnston's powerful and moving poems cry out for peace. Her words reflect the hope that all of us share for an end to armed conflicts throughout the globe. This collection of poems is as much for adult readers as it is for children, if not more so. Sensitive, intelligent, passionate and lovingly written. One will be compelled to return to its pages ...

The Spoon in the Bathroom Wall2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Harcourt Children's Books, 2005

Enjoyable pageturner with a character everyone can relate to
Martha Snapdragon has no idea that she is destined for greatness one day. THE SPOON IN THE BATHROOM WALL by Tony Johnston tells the story of Martha and her experiences at Horace E. Bloggins Elementary School after a mysterious message appears on the wall. When she reads, "The King is Coming - And It's About Time," she doesn't really believe it. Martha is a student at Horace E. Bloggins ...

Sunsets Of The West (Sweep, 12)2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Putnam Juvenile, 2002

GLOWING ILLUSTRATIONS ADD LUSTER TO THIS STORY
Tony Johnston opens his saga of a pioneer family trekking westward with an apt quotation from Louis L'Amour's "The Quick and the Dead," "Many have died, Suzanna, but more will come. There are always people who hope, who wish, who dream." Hope, wish and dream is precisely what this family does as they reluctantly say farewell to the familiar in New Hampshire, and set out for the unknown. ...

My Best Friend Bear2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Rising Moon Books, 2001

Absolutely adorable.
My daughter has a bear that she loves so much that I would return 100 miles to retrieve. This book delightfully depicts this kind of love. My daughter's bear has been loved so much that his stuffing came out too. Any little girl with a favorite suffed animal will relate to this book. We have checked it out of the library so many times that I have just decided to buy it.

My Mexico / México mío2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Putnam Juvenile, 1999

A Wonderful Collection of Poems about Mexico
The book My Mexico - Mio Mexico is an interesting collection of poems about life in Mexico that reaches a broad spectrum of younger readers. As a middle school teacher of Spanish, these poems are excellent examples of the differing views of Mexico - from the lament for the Aztecs in "Donde Estan?" to the poem "Soy Cucuracha" which is humorous and sure to make your students think and laugh! I ...

The Barn Owls1 review
Tony Johnston

Scholastic, 2000

A quiet, gentle story with good info on barn owls
This is another great bedtime story. The rhythmic words and repeating phrases roll off the tongue naturally in slow, calm tones. The watercolor paintings echo the quietness of the owls' lives. The minimal text gives a general feel for barn owls' lives. Simple and lovely.

Big Red Apple (Hello Reader! Level 1)2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Turtleback Books: A Division of Sanval, 2000

Books for one/two year olds don't come any better!
This is so great! I have read this to my daughter (2 yrs old) over and over. She requests it by saying "Phut, Phut, Phut", which is her favorite part. We love the opportunities to dramatize sounds, which in turn my daughter mimics. This keeps her interested and enables her to "help me read" the book. Nearly ever page has something she will identify. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Angel City1 review
Tony Johnston

Philomel, 2006

Where's the Love? Where are the Angels? In this Book
Picture books can be a lot more than a sweet story for preschoolers that you read them at bedtime. Some picture books are not sweet, are not for little children and may not make for good bedtime tales. Angel City is one of those kinds of books: an amazing, profound and powerful read that doesn't quite fit the familiar mold. The reader gets that little chill that announces this book is something ...

The Tale of Rabbit and Coyote2 reviews
Tony Johnston

Scholastic, 1995

The Tale of Rabbit and Coyote
Rabbit is very mischievous and clever. But after he steals chili peppers from a farmer one night, he finds himself trapped in a sack, waiting to be thrown into a pot of boiling water for the farmer's meal. Just then, Coyote comes along and asks what Rabbit is doing there. Rabbit tells him that he is waiting to marry the farmer's beautiful daughter and offers for Coyote to take his place. ...

Fishing Sunday1 review
Tony Johnston

HarperCollins, 1996

A universal lesson rooted in the particular
Without being preachy, Tony Johnston reminds us that sometimes it takes a shift in perspective to recognize our treasures. Uri Shulevitz did this with THE TREASURE, another book of great loveliness. Children may respond even more to this universal lesson through reading Johnston's book, which is rooted in the life of one young Japanese American boy learning to love and appreciate his ...
