History of My Life, Vols. 1-218 reviews
Giacomo Chevalier de Seingalt Casanova

The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1997

Incredible, Insightful, Captivating...there is NO excuse for not giving this a try
I started the abridged version in French, and kept thinking..."this *can't* be Casanova's writing; it's clunky, far from eloquent, and lacks style." Thankfully I was right. Though I downloaded the free version from project gutenberg (just do a google search), I was *so* impressed by this translation that I bought the hardcopy anyway. All historical notes and translation notes aside, the ...

Twisted Tales from Shakespeare24 reviews
Richard Willard Armour

Signet, 1966

great satire
I have only seen this book once, when I borrowed it from a high school student to read. It was part of his high school AP lit class, where they were required to read the "real" Shakespeare. This was just to keep the class lively! It was an amazing book for anyone familiar with Shakespeare's work. Absolutely hilerious! I don't know why it's not still in print. A great read!

Love Busters19 reviews
Willard F. Harley

Monarch Books, 1995

Our Marriage Isn't Falling Apart...
After 8yrs of dating and 4yrs of marriage, our relationship had become...well, boring. Our date nights, if we had them, were typical dinner and a movie. Something was definitely missing. A church marriage counsellor recommended this book along with The 5 Love Languages. It is a must read for BOTH spouses. Do not expect results with only one partner reading and/or applying it!

Amazon Adventure17 reviews
Willard Price

John Day Company, 1949

Amazon Adventure
I accidentally ran across this book at the school library. This is one of the best action-adventure books for children that I have read in a long time. I think it would be appropriate to compare it to Indiana Jones. There is action from the start to the finish. This book would appeal to any child from third grade and up. It would be perfect for the boy that doesn't like to read and needs ...

Seven Pleasures: Essays on Ordinary Happiness18 reviews
Willard Spiegelman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2009

More than 7
I have done the math on Willard Spiegelman's gem of a book: 192 pages divided by 7 pleasures = 1 pleasure per 27.4 pages. WRONG!! By the time I reached page 4 I had already had 2 madeleines dipped in tea. A magical experience!

The Spirit of the Disciplines45 reviews

HarperCollins e-books, 2009

Foundational
This is a foundational book for me. It's as relevant now as when originally published. It's more about the necessity for Christians being real disciples of Jesus Christ and the need for spiritual disciplines to train disciples whose character and lives resemble those of Jesus than it is about how to practice the spiritual disciplines. The problem addressed by this book is the tendency to ...

I Toto : The Autobiography of Terry, the Dog who was Toto23 reviews
Willard Carroll, Timothy Shaner

Stewart, Tabori and Chang, 2001

Great Little Autobiography
I love anything "Toto", but had no idea his career was so extensive, aside from being the star of the Wizard of Oz. The book's illustrations are wonderful; in fact, when my husband glanced over my shoulder as I was reading it he said he wanted to see it when I finished. He is a lover of old movies, so he enjoyed the book as well. I've lived with many Cairn Terriers through the years (my mom ...

Beyond Success and Failure: Ways to Self-Reliance and Maturity21 reviews
Willard Beecher, Marguerite Beecher

Pocket, 1982

Discover the journey you are on.
I normally consider myself a non-reader, but I was at a point in my life that things were changing very quickly and I need to know about the journey I was on. When I began the book, I asked myself "How will I know when I am reading about myself?" It happened in chapter five when my eyes welled up. I knew then as it described who I used to be and validated to me that my journey was on the path of ...

High Country15 reviews
Willard Wyman

RecordedBooks, 2008

High Country a winner
Great book if you love the mountains and enjoy escaping into a great story line with wonderful descriptions of the life of a packer in the mountains. I could not put the book down!

Things Invisible to See9 reviews
Nancy Willard

Bantam Books, 1986

Defies categorization, as do all magical things.
I just ordered a hardback copy of this book, because my paperback is falling apart from so many readings! I was not surprised to see so many other reviews for a book so old; because this is a wonderful, magical book. I picked it up at a used book-store, even though it looked to be a "fantasy", which I don't read. But this novel cannot be wedged into any genre. If you love baseball, are interested ...

History of Religious Ideas, Volume 1: From the Stone Age to the Eleusinian Mysteries9 reviews
Mircea Eliade

University Of Chicago Press, 1979

The human and the spiritual
Mircea Eliade has spent a lifetime exploring the origins, meaning and mysteries of mankind's spiritual inner being. He is the Joseph Campbell of religion - not myth. This first volume was ably translated (from the French) into clear and direct English - a hallmark of his writing. It is difficult to speak knowingly of neolithic religion because the evidence is largely circumstantial and ...

Topology from the Differentiable Viewpoint9 reviews
John Willard Milnor

Princeton University Press, 1997

best math book ever written
Despite the lovely subject matter covered in this book, it more importanty gives one a taste of Mathematics as an intellectual discipline. It in outline shows how a mathematical theory - in this case Differential Topology - is constructed and consquently what mathematicians actually do and think about. Anyone who would like to appreciate Mathematics as a field of study rather than just learn ...

Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Lesson Book Level 1A11 reviews
Willard Palmer, Morton Manus, ...

Alfred Publishing Company, 1981

The best beginner book I've found
I'm a general music teacher and I've been teaching piano lessons to beginners for two years now. I've looked through a bunch of beginner piano books to try to find what I think is the best. This book and whole series works very well for all of my students and their different learning styles. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to buy a beginner piano book for a child.

Remembering to Breathe: Inside Dog Obedience Competition10 reviews
Willard Bailey

Infinity Publishing, 2003

Obedience Novice
I enjoyed this book and found the authors trials and tribulations similar to my own. It was easy to read and had several helpful tips as well. Although it's more of a novel, it can help us novice folks learn some of the ins and outs of dog shows. I doubt if someone who is already a trainer, or who is show wise would find this book helpful. But..for those of us just beginning it's great!

Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens: Helping Young People Learn To Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly8 reviews

Jossey-Bass, 2007

A Voice of Reason
I read Nancy's latest book, Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, on a flight this past week, partly because it's been sitting on my shelf for way too long, and partly because I knew I would be speaking a few days later to youth at a regional church meeting about technology in their lives. It is a great book on the Internet for parents, and don't miss the good material that she provides at her ...

My life as an Indian (A Fawcett premier book)10 reviews
James Willard Schultz

Fawcett Publications, 1907

Buffalo culture of the Piegan Blackfeet
This is a terrific story of a young white man's time with the Piegan Blackfeet. James Willard Schultz came west for adventure and joined an Indian trading post 45 miles north of Fort Benton, Montana. He not only traded furs, gold, liquor, and dressmakers goods to the Indians, but became fluent in the language of the Blackfeet, sharing in their hunts and wars and even taking a young Indian wife. ...

Leone's Italian Cookbook11 reviews
Gene Leone

Harper & Row, 1967

Yes, yes, yes to Leone's Italian Cookbook
I purchased this book shortly after it originally came out in 1970. At the time, I was married to an Italian gentleman who was raised by family from the "old country." He never hesitated to say that with that book (I am NOT Italian), I could cook for any Italians and bring smiles to their faces! To this day, it is my favorite Italian cookbook, and I'm going to purchase it for my ...

Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Piano Course: Level 38 reviews, ...

Alfred Publishing, 2010

Higly recommended Piano Course Book
I highly Recommend Alfred's Basic Adult All in One Piano Course (I bought level 1, level 2 and level 3 ). If you have no background in piano and/or music theory, I believe this book will guide you even from scratch, .... and by completing level 3 book, you will most likely can play very nice classical stuff (Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, Bach's Works etc,) and also you will have ...
