The Bedford Guide for College Writers2 reviews
X. J. Kennedy, Dorothy M. Kennedy, ...

St Martins Pr, 1996

An excellent AP English Grammar Resource Book!
This book is a great resource from Grammar. It outlines it in an easy to follow fashion. I would suggest having your own copy of it in order to take notes and study the really important areas. Other parts of the book are very helpful with writing. Please E-mail me if you know of any other great grammar books.

Knee-deep In Blazing Snow: Growing Up In Vermont2 reviews
James Hayford, X. J. Kennedy, ...

Wordsong, 2005

A Jewel
This gentle book of poetry is wonderful and would make a good gift for anyone fond of New England and the outdoors, be they child or adult. James Hayford was encouraged by meeting Robert Frost when young, and went on to be an evocative, if unjustly overlooked, poet. The title of the book suggests his grasp of imagery, and skilful rhyme and meter predominate throughout. In the Frost tradition, ...

Bedford Anthology of American Literature V1 & Writing and Revising2 reviews
Susan Belasco, Linck Johnson, ...

Bedford/St. Martin's, 2007

A Good Anthology of Early America
I am currently using this anthology in the American literature course I am taking. The history and background information is interesting and easy to understand. The literary selections are a good mix and representative of the time periods. I find myself more interested in some of the pieces thanks to the "Through a Modern Lens" pieces included throughout the anthology.

The Owlstone Crown4 reviews
X. J. Kennedy

Atheneum Books, 1983

Fast-paced adventure
Why is this fast-paced fantasy fun out of print? Kids about 4th grade will want to look for it in libraries. When unhappy orphans Tim and Verity Tibb fall into a parallel world called 'Other Earth,' they quickly rally an assortment of odd friends to defeat a criminal dictator and restore peace to the realm. Suspense and excitement combine with genuine humor in this gripping yarn. There is also ...

Talking Like the Rain: A Read-to-Me Book of Poems11 reviews
X.J. Kennedy, Dorothy M. Kennedy

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2002

Great Book of Poetry For Children (and Parents)
Last night, my not-quite-three-year-old daughter spontaneously recited a couple dozen poems from this book to my wife and me. We were astounded. She's been requesting that we read TALKING LIKE THE RAIN to her day and night since I bought it last month, but we had no idea how deeply the poems had sunken in. What better endorsement can one give to such a book? We plan to buy several more copies ...

Poetry Speaks to Children (Book & CD) (Read & Hear)36 reviews

Sourcebooks MediaFusion, 2005

A wonderful "stand by" gift.
Anytime I order from Amazon, I throw one of these in my cart for a last minute new baby, birthday or teacher gift. It is a wonderfully diverse selection of poems, often read by the poets themselves. How cool is it to hear Robert Frost in a scratchy rendition of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"? My 4th grader was thrilled when his class read a Janet Wong poem, and he could tell them ...

The Beasts of Bethlehem2 reviews
X. J. Kennedy

Margaret Mcelderry, 1992

Infuse Your Holiday with Grace
Enthralling poems for young and old. You are touched, amused, startled, and may be moved to tears at the musings of the beasts who witness the birth of the Babe.

Knock At A Star4 reviews
X.J., Ed. Kennedy

Turtleback, 1999

Great Collection!
As a teacher- I found this book to an incredible assest to have in the clasroom. This is a very exemplary eclectic collection. It contains a wide variety of poem forms, styles, and authors. Usefully organized into category chapters, it easy to find a poem relating to a topic. The book is organized into useful sections that have equally as useful subcategories. These divisions make it easy to ...

Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama, Compact Edition, Interactive Edition (4th Edition)1 review
X. J. Kennedy, Dana M. Gioia

Longman, 2004

Good Refresher--refers to the 6th Edition
This review refers to the 6th Edition. I read this book as a refresher of the basics and found it very helpful. I especially value the simple, easy to understand definitions of the Literary Elements and the examples that accompany them. It would be nice if we can search inside the latest edition because first thing I'd like to check is the Table of Contents and if it reflects the expansion of ...

Karma, Dharma, Pudding & Pie1 review
Philip Appleman

Quantuck Lane Press, 2009

Karma, Dharma, Pudding & Pie
Interesting, refreshing, different. Worth the purchase. The poems were fun, the illustrations hillarious. I would recommend the purchase of this little book to anyone who enjoys irreverent humor.

Writer's Reference 6e & Brief Bedford Reader 9e1 review
Diana Hacker, X. J. Kennedy, ...

Bedford/St. Martin's, 2006

Just what I needed!
Whenever I have had an English class, without fail the teacher always seemed to assign boring, dry reference materials and a book of essays that either made me want to scream or cry. They assigned scathing political commentary, socio-political stories about the harshness of life a hundred years ago, and even full-length novels where your favorite character dies near the end! It lead me to ...

One Winter Night in August and Other Nonsense Jingles1 review
X. J. Kennedy

Scribner, 1975

My Cocoa Skin Coat
Kennedy's first book of poems for kids was a hilarious journey into pure nonsense, all done in deft rhyme and meter. Kids are sure to like the pure unsentimental whimsy of these imaginative rhymes and the absurd characters they conjure. There hasn't been such unabashed craziness since Dr. Seuss. Noted illustrator David McPhail (of "Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore" fame) adds finely wrought ...

Cartwheel to the Moon: My Sicilian Childhood1 review
Emanuel di Pasquale

Cricket Books, 2003

Lyrical Chiaroscuro
This poet, strongly supported by the former poetry editor of the Paris Review and winner of a prestigious poetry translation prize, deserves far greater recognition than he has so far received. A certain tender melancholy deepens the charming memories of a time and place now fading forever. The reader will surely feel what he can never see and never experience.

In a Prominent Bar in Secaucus: New and Selected Poems, 1955--2007 (Johns Hopkins: Poetry and Fiction)1 review
Mr. X. J. Kennedy

The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007

"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may"
X.J. Kennedy published two books of poetry in 2007. He writes that In a Prominent Bar in Secaucus "has the best poems [I've] written, plus 27 new ones, some of them pretty good too. This collection has been cited as a 2008 Notable Book by the American Library Association." The second volume is Peeping Tom's Cabin: Comic Verse; he promises to write no more comic verse until 2009. "This book ...

Cross Ties: Selected Poems1 review
X. J. Kennedy

Univ of Georgia Pr, 1985

A modern master
This collection of the best of Kennedy's career spans an amazing variety of tones and themes, frequently with wit and poignancy. It justifiably won the Los Angeles Times Book award for poetry in 1985. Kennedy almost always adheres to strict rhyme and meter, placing him squarely in the tradition of past masters.

Handbook of Literary Terms: Literature, Language, Theory1 review
X. J. Kennedy, Dana Gioia, ...

Longman, 2004

A good choice
This is exactly the right book for someone like me, who wants a lively, expert, up-to-date and, within its relatively brief compass, a reasonably comprehensive guide to terms in language, literary criticism and theory, but one that is not too technical, not clogged with jargon. I like the clarity and conciseness, and the helpful cross-referencing which allows one to put this definition or that in ...

Elympics: Poems (Olympics)1 review
X. J. Kennedy

Philomel, 1999

Excellent for this upcoming Summer Olympics
Elympics is a wonderful book that any child would enjoy. I am a first grade teacher and this book has been very useful in explaining to my students about the 2000 Olympics. The Elephant goes through all the different events that will take place this year by using poetry to express himself. This book is fun as well as educational.
