Zane Grey's best
Of all the zane Grey classics, this is one of his best. Lassiter, the gunman, up against the Mormon power in Utah, complete with a hidden valley, thoroughbred horses, and plenty of bad guys. Adventure/romance has survived the years to remain a classic.

One of the best baseball books ever
When Chase Alloway's father dies he leaves his widowed mother and crippled brother and goes off to make his fortune as a baseball player. This story tells of his adventures in doing so, and introduces to the world of minor - league baseball , and major- league character- building that is at the heart of Zane Grey's story. As a child I read this book hundreds of times. I would go to sleep with it ...

Great western with an edgy hero
I have read many Louis L'Amour westerns and although I love his books I have to say this book by Gray is better than anything I have read by L'Amour. Buck Duane is an interesting character with a lot of depth and showed considerable development throughout the novel, unlike most westerns with generic characters who show little development. Duane is a dark, brooding and character who struggles ...

one of the truly great Westerns
Her father's death has left Jane Withersteen in possession of the richest land holding in the Cottonwoods, a Mormon village on the 1871 Utah frontier. Most importantly, Amber Spring runs through her property and so she controls the water supply that makes possible the rolling fields of purple sage. But now the Mormon church wants to gain contol of the spring by forcing an unwilling Jane to ...

Clashes: Modern vs Old World Values
This is a well-written story that exemplifies in popular format the ongoing clash between old values and modern thinking. As I read this story, these values seemed more cohesive and less unbreechable... as long as respect and love are part of the picture.

Riviting and engaging reading at its best!
Reading this book puts one right on the ship with Mr. Grey, to wittness all the splendor and action that goes with deep-sea fishing. His descriptive writing technique is easy to understand, and beautifully captures in detail the beauty of the Tahitian waters, islands and people. Accompanied by spectacular photos, you can easily slip back to another time and place, when the fish were teaming and ...

Absolutely great reading
I have no idea of what the reviewer means by "edited version" but Zane Grey is the author that caught my imagination and love for reading when I was a child. Being born and raised on a farm there was little to do after supper and all the chores were done except reading before you went to bed. With Zane Grey's detail, you could become the hero and feel all of the angst they were experiencing, ...

Virgin Fishing
Do you ever wonder what it would be like to go back in time and be one of the first to truly fish virgin waters? Wonder, no more! Zane Grey's voyage into the Pacific is truly adventurous. Zane takes us to primitive islands that were not exactly on the map, and finds a tropical world of wonder. At times he and his cronies cannot land a fish, because the sharks are so thick, other times they ...

One of my favorite westerns.
If you like westerns you will love this one. I have read some of his books, (it will take a while to get through them all!) and this is a good read! A story about a good man at heart with a bad reputation. Nevada and The Thundering Herd are two others worth looking for as well.

Classic restored
It truly is a pleasure to read a novel in the form it was first envisioned by the author. with "Dorn of the Mountains", we get the opportunity to read "Man of the Forest", the way Zane intended. That, in itself, is a treat. The novel takes us (and Milt Dorn), into a race against outlaws wanting to kidnap the daughters of a neighboring spread. Protecting the girls, and forced to rely on his ...

western/romance
I just love this book, so far I've only read it 3 times, but it is certainly one of my very favorites. Zane Gray describes with exacting detail the wondrous beauty of the west, with the the struggles of a romantic relationship between a wounded returning WW1 veteran and his girl friend, who just happens to be a headstrong New Yorker used to having things her way.The story is timeless and exciting ...

Historic novel
I recomment reading this book if you are at all interested in period history of the building of the Boulder/Hoover Dam. Zane Grey's colorful depiction of that era is priceless. The ambiance of that time and place really come to life. My father worked on the Dam, and this book is like the heart and soul of the project. Charlene Cruze/EARTHMARK

The Cowboy Manifesto
For decades the cowboy was the quintessential American hero. My generation saw the demise of that. I had not read a Zane Grey western in at least forty years, so reading THE KNIGHTS OF THE RANGE left me feeling nostalgic. It contained one of the favorite clichés of the era: "Frayne, I'll give you till sundown to leave this range" (p. 239). Though Grey's westerns are more romance than ...

A Classic western!
Zane Grey's bestselling novels have thrilled generations of readers with heart-and-guts characters, hard-shooting action, and high-plains panoramas. To save his cowboy gambler brother, Bruce Lockheart takes to the fugitive trail for a crime he didn't commit, and is hotly pursued by a relentless ranger and the woman who loves him.

Betty Zane
I read "Betty Zane" many years ago when I was in the 4th grade. I was absolutely thrilled with this book. It made me want to learn more about the history of America, especially during pioneer times. Now I am buying the book for my granddaughter. I hope she will share the love of this book.

Tremendous
I first read these books many years ago. What a joy to find them republished in one volume. The stories contained are rated as fiction, but there is a mixture of truth and fiction through out the three stories. Many of the characters were real, and some of the stories described are based on actual events. A marvelous read, and one that can carry the reader back to another time. I consider ...

A true Zane Grey classic beautifully recorded.
Upon the death of his uncle, Ernest Selby (a young man from Iowa) inherits the Red Rock Ranch in Arizona. When he learns that the ranch's twenty thousand cattle have dwindled to six thousand he suspects foul play. In order to investigate these strange circumstances, Ernest decides to go under cover and lands a job on his own ranch, posing as a tenderfoot cowboy. As he makes friends, enemies, ...
