Trenchant Probings of Subcultural Folly
Oops, that summary makes me sound like one of Crawford's characters (NOT a self-compliment). But that's only fair, as his art functions best as a mirror in which we in the supposed "underground" (which term has lost most of its meaning since these cartoons first appeared) can laugh and wince at our own absurdity. His grotesque drawings and ripsaw wit make mincemeat of everything lame and ...

Party Animals?
Charles Darwin once wrote of his belief that if we would learn something very important if we could but understand the behavior of baboon. The authors of this enthralling book are widely known for their studies of primate behavior in the Okavango in Botswana, and set out to do just that: understand how behavior baboons live and organize their lives. Baboons live in groups of up to 150 ...

Going Baboony!
This is a very enjoyable and creative book that educates in a deceiving manner (you don't even realize that you are learning!). The fun of the Kratts' Creatures PBS series is effectively translated to this publication.

A Delightful African Adventure
I recently received my copies of this charming book to give to the children in my family during the holidays. The first graders will enjoy reading about Binti's experiences and lessons learned from the animals of the Africian bush and the younger children will enjoy hearing the stories read to them. The artwork is charming and I know Binti's adventures will be a wonderful addition to our little ...

OUR FAVORITE BABOONA IS BACK!
Altoona Baboona's auntie is lonely in North Saskatoona. So Altoona and her friends board their trusty balloon and fly up for a visit. The North is cold and snowy, and poor Auntie yearns for someplace warm. As the foursome trek, ski, ice fish, sled-dog, and float, do they notice the change in climate? Children will love 'getting' the joke on Altoona, long before she figures it out herself. Bynum's ...
Foraging for Survival: Yearling Baboons in Africa

Stuart A. Altmann
University Of Chicago Press
, 1998
This book is destined to become a classic in primatology.
This is a story of how eleven juvenile baboons feed themselves. The setting: Amboseli National Park, Kenya. This is, however, much more than a simple story. Throughout, Altmann engages the reader with his elegant analysis - rich with ecological detail - of the costs and benefits primates must negotiate in their daily pursuit of requisite nutrients and energy. Baboons are exemplary eclectic ...

Primate Gross Anatomy
27 years after it was first published an "Atlas of Primate Gross Anatomy" remains the definitive text on catarrhine anatomy. The primary focus of the atlas is the regional anatomy of the baboon with comparative references to Pan and Man (Homo sapiens sapiens). All regions are covered with special emphasis placed on the limbs. The text is clearly written and well referenced by Dr. Swindler ...

Great Read
This is the fifth book in a series of six books made after the first Lion King movie was released. All of them depict either the adventures of Kopa (Simba and Nala's son) or a story told to Kopa about past events in the Lion King universe. These books, which are geared for children, are an entertaining read for anyone who's a Lion King fan. On the first page of each book there is a list of ...

A fine story of friendship and survival evolves in this fun adventure born of The Three Little Pigs
Donna Jo Napoli's MOGO, THE THIRD WARTHOG tells of a warthog who is the runt of the letter, determined to survive in the tough African savanna. When it's time for him to leave home he faces many dangers - and ironically his bossy, lazy older siblings may not have his resilience when it comes to survival tactics. A fine story of friendship and survival evolves in this fun adventure born of The ...

*~*~Altoona will make you swoon-a*~*~
Lovable Altoona has been a favorite in our home for years. Now my first grader loves that she can finally read Altoona to herself. She was hooked a long time ago by the first sentence.."Altoona Baboona flicks peas with a spoon-a." Altoona Baboona is a bored baboon with wanderlust in her heart. She takes off on a high-flying adventure in a hot air balloon and discovers friendship along the way. ...

Irresistible African Travel Journal
All through Brandon Wilson's Dead Men Don't Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa one idea kept coming to me. Parallax! That's not a word that comes to mind every day. In science, it means getting better or more complete information about displacement or movement by collecting data from two points of view that are not in a straight line with the thing you are examining or learning about. "After all ...

A Fun Find For New Readers And Old
My family seeks out books by Jon Buller and Susan Schade, and I think we have almost all of them. When I saw the "Danger Joe Show" series, I was thrilled. My first-grade son can now continue to grow as a reader while having a great time learning. The information about animals and Africa in "Bungie Baboon Rescue" is clear, simple, and totally delightful. The characters are unique but believable, ...

Baboon evokes a sense of quiet at bedtime
I love a bedtime book that I can read in a whisper, and this book is a melody of soothing tones. The language is amazing; it's lovely to read, non-repetitive, and truly evocative of the quest for any mother (baboon, human, whomever) to describe the world to the hungry eyes of a young child. I'd pick this every night for bedtime reading if I could.

An All Time Favorite
This book is hard to classify: Is it autobiography? Primatolgy? Travel adventures? Humanist philosophy? Humor? Basically it is all of these and more. It is a real page turner. Sapolsky has a truly marvelous sense of humor that includes knowing how to laugh at himself. I rank it with in the top 10 favorite books I've ever read. Bravo!

Shirley C. Strum

An important book of science and meta-science
Strum's account of her fieldwork is intensely interesting, as she looked past the "received wisdom" about baboon hierarchies and saw what was really going on. Of course baboons are not identical to humans - but the fundamental impulses of baboon behavior and their strategies for dealing with the their society and the world around them are similar to many things humans do; Strum claims no more ...

They don't make books like this any more
If you read my other two book reviews, you'll notice that I am a fan of Paul Zindel's writing. And after reading The Pigman and The Pigman's Legacy, I wanted to get my hands on anything the man's written. I picked up Confessions Of A Teenage Baboon one day, and I haven't put it down since. Basically the book revolves around fifteen-year-old Chris Boyd and his struggles with his dysfunctional ...

Science writing at its best
This is popular science writing at its best. Hans Kummer summarizes a lifetime's work with one of the most fascinating primate species there is. He is an eloquent writer and a superb scientist who really knows his subject. I assign this book to my primatology classes because he explains difficult concepts well and because he clearly outlines his thought processes as his research program ...
