Great Book on the Best Type of Skiing
This is a great book. Not too basic and not too advanced for someone wanting to get into the best way to ski-the earn your turns way. I used to teach alpine touring and ski mountaineering in the army and this would have been a great book to have around as the textbook. We taught all of this and then went in depth on the important items like avalanche safety (avoidance) and rescue. This book ...

Absolutely The Best!
I was at the Outdoor Expo and was looking at a much smaller book, for half as much money...It was the only one I saw (and they were very numerous) on the many trails Arizona has to offer. Well I passed it by, and told myself on the way out I would probably buy it, well I am glad I waited, I stopped by the booth and noticed one large book at the end of the table...it was the last one, and was 3 ...

Don't Leave Home Without It
This book was written by Rick Curtis, director of the Outdoor Action Program at Princeton University, one of the most succesful college outdoor programs around. It's not the kind of book you sit down and read, rather it's a good reference to keep handy when you have questions about things. Here's a bit of what it covers: -backpacking equipment -cooking and nutrition -hygiene and water ...

Excellent, But Needs Spiral Binding
Backcountry Adventures are the best guides of their kind out there. Odometer references, descriptive text, and (especially) GPS coordinates make these easy and foolproof to use. The map and index for the respective areas, Southeast, Central, etc., make planning your route easy as the different routes are color coded with their page numbers referenced. Good sampling of human interest content also, ...

Betty, Your not in Manhattan any more!
This was a really fun book. OK, I am a guy and if I was a girl, I would probably not be a Betty, but I do spend a lot of time backpacking and the author pretty well nailed what you need to know to have fun in the woods. I believe she did a great job of convincing woman that they can hit the trail without losing their style, and she convinced me that Betty's might be fun to have along on the ...

Great off-the-beaten-tract ski tours
I'm very pleased with this guide book. It's taken me to many places I would not have thought to go ski touring. Whenever our small group of ski tourers gets tired of the tri-canyon SLC area, we break out Bradley's book and head someplace new for the day. It's a must have for the serious Utah ski tourer.

A guide to getting to know Southern California
After being transplanted to Southern California from the Northwest, I felt hemmed in, separated from all things natural. Backcountry Adventures has helped to change that. It's a wonderful guide to exploring the region. The hefty book begins with a historical, botanical and geographic guide to the region, highlighting Southern California's explorers, settlers, missionaries, bandits, flora, ...

it's worth the weight
In 1992 the first edition of The Backcountry Classroom leapt into Wilderness Educators backpacks and was welcomed with open arms and praise. Paul Petzoldt commented that the book was "invaluable for confirming one's own expertise as well as discovering voids." The second edition of the same work is no exception. This new edition of the The Backcountry Classroom has more than doubled in size and ...

Handy collection of recipes
This is a nice collection of great tasting, easy to prepare recipes made with items commonly found in your grocery store. The sturdy little recipe cards easily pack into your kitchen kit taking up minimal space and adding negligible weight to your pack. I only gave it four stars because I would have liked to see nutritional information for each recipe on the cards also, but overall it is great ...

Concise and full of ideas
Knowledgeable author gives the reader enough mouth-watering ideas for ski trips to keep you happy for years; the reader provides the backcountry know-how, navigation skills and bravado to pull it off. Don't expect connect-the-dots style guiding, do buy the appropriate maps and go enjoy the excellent terrain. A healthy balance of a guidebook.

Cool book on cool weather camping
Well, I just panned a different book and said don't waste your money so now its time to even the score. This book is great fun. I have lots of winter camping books and do a fair amount of winter camping. Other books may have more information, but none covers all of the basics with as much humor as this one. I do alpine skiing and snowshoeing so the coverage of tele skiing wasn't of ...

Excellent book -- buy the new edition
I won't rehash how good this book is, you have all 9 other reviews to do it. Just a note of caution, make sure you buy the latest edition (from 2006). Amazon still lists the one from 2002 first in the search results. I like the GPS coordinates, and the fact that it gives directions and mileage for each trail in both directions. So you have a lot more flexibility on how you plan your outing.

Finally a book for those that like to eat
This book is excellent. It may not have the largest number of recipes, but the ones it does have are well thought out, backpacker friendly, and just plain good. The book has a lot of variety too. Each recipe is organized into two parts, the pre-hike preparation (what to do at home) and then then a on-trail section. The authors have tried to simplify the on-trail requirements making meal time ...

Focus on the Frontier
Historians of the Seven Years War have often neglected to give much attention to the waging of that war in the backcountry of Pennsylvania and Virginia, preferring instead to concentrate on the conquest of Canada. Most of the set-piece, European style battles of that war happened in Canada or New York, and the conquest of Canada is generally viewed as the most important accomplishment of that war ...

This book is the authority on backcountry flyfishing.
Rich Osthoff knows what he is talking about. I have read many books that attempt to cover backcountry flyfishing, and none have done so as well as Osthoff's. As an experienced backcountry flyfisherman, I found Osthoff is right on the money with all he had to say. There was still a lot of material to challenge even the experinced though. If you have any interest in catching gorgeous fish in an ...
