Bangkok Babylon: The Real-Life Exploits of Bangkok's Legendary Expatriates are often Stranger than Fiction6 reviews
Jerry Hopkins

Periplus Editions, 2006

Absolutely wonderful!
As an expat living in Bangkok, I can assure you Hopkins knows this city well, and the characters he describes are the most interesting bunch of characters you're ever likely to read about. Full of fun and panache on the surface, it also has a core of considerable importance: the fact that a person can reinvent him or herself and probably nowhere as easily as in Bangkok. Highly recommended.

GROOVY BANGKOK MAP 'N' GUIDE4 reviews
Aaron Frankel

Groovy Map Co Ltd, 2007

GET THIS MAP!
If you are traveling to or through Bangkok, do yourself a favor and get this guide! It highlights key places, has helpful hints to get around, and is laminated in a handy pocket size. We just moved to Bangkok and this map (and the pocket sized thai phrasebook) never leave my husband's pocket. So far all of the recommendations and hints on the map have been very accurate and good. By the way, an ...

The Intimate Economies of Bangkok: Tomboys, Tycoons, and Avon Ladies in the Global City

Bangkok (City Guide)11 reviews
Joe Cummings, China Williams

Lonely Planet, 2006

Where would you buy it?
Amazon.com says this book will be published on March 2005. But try to go to Lonely Planet's online shop, then you can see that it has been published on Sep. 2004. Next, bn.com says it's been publised on March 2004. I don't know which is right. But I'm sure that this book came out already. I gave 5 stars, however, because I knows LP is a great series at least.

Bangkok Tattoo66 reviews
John Burdett

Vintage, 2006

Another fascinating tale
I've read several Burkett titles, and I'd recommend this one as a nice addition to his Asian tales. This would also make an excellent first selection to buy if it's your first taste of his writing. I admit my fascination with his writing has a bit to do with spending some time in Bangkok on business and sneaking out at night and tiptoeing through the jungle. Having lived there for decades, ...

Bangkok 8: A Novel142 reviews
John Burdett

Vintage, 2004

A HODGEPODGE OF INGENUITY!
Forget about whether or not this book accurately depicts Bangkok life, or is slanted by the misconstrued vision of the author. After all, it is not a travelogue, it is a work of fiction first and foremost. And it is a work of fiction of extreme ingenuity. The writer is highly talented. He is also highly complex, and so is his story. And he is funny as all get out. I can't count the many ...

Bangkok Haunts48 reviews
John Burdett

Vintage Books, 2008

Police Procedural - Thai Style
Thailand, poverty stricken and seething with mysticism, is the brilliant setting for this police procedural - Thai style. When mesmerizing prostitute Damrong becomes the star of a well produced snuff film, Detective Sonchai Jitplecheep calls in his farang (westerner) friend - "almost" lover Kimberly Jones - to help him find the killer, and Eastern and Western cultures are brought face to face. ...

Periplus Travel Maps Bangkok (Thailand Regional Maps) (Thailand Regional Maps)1 review

Periplus Editions, 2007

Detailed and well laid out....
Bangkok Travel Map, Fourth Edition (Periplus Travel Maps). Of ALL the maps available for Bangkok, this was the most recent print. The Periplus Bangkok (5th edition) was very informative and easy to interpret: showing subway & rail routes, major hotels, points of interest, hospitals, etc. Important and useful info for most travelers. It has been 8 years since my last trip to Bangkok and the ...

Time Out Bangkok: And Beach Escapes (Time Out Guides)2 reviews
Editors of Time Out

Time Out, 2007

great food suggestions
I was a little skeptical using a Time Out guide for the first time, but I must admit that this guide led us to numerous local eateries that were absolutely fantastic. We used the "eating" section to choose 4 local places for dinner and we were handsomely rewarded with great food, at cheap prices, from local places that we never would have found on our own. While the maps are a little lacking ...

The Bangkok Survivor's Handbook: A Guide to Living in Asia's City of Angels (Paperback - Second edition, ...5 reviews
Robert Hein

Expat Publications, 2006

Filled with details, a gripping read!
I spent 9 months in Thailand in the Peace Corps many years ago, and visited the LOS again last May. I have started fantasizing about retiring there, so I bought "The Bangkok Survivor's Handbook" to add more fact to my fantasy. Most guidebooks are a struggle for me to read, but this one is such fun that I finished it in one sitting, interrupted only by supper. It is definitely targeted at ...

A Nail Through the Heart: A Novel of Bangkok18 reviews
Timothy Hallinan

Harper Paperbacks, 2008

Darkness and light in Bangkok
I've written four novels set in China, and know a good piece of writing by a westerner about Asia when I see it. This book fits the bill perfectly. `A Nail Through the Heart' is set in contemporary Bangkok. While technically a thriller, it is written with both the flair and depth that you would want from a `literary' novel. This is proper writing - it begins with a beautifully set scene: ...

Confessions of a Bangkok Private Eye: True stories from the case files of Warren Olson6 reviews
Warren Olson

Monsoon Books Pte. Ltd., 2006

Better book than some reviewers here suggest
I commend the previous reviewers, and in particular Joseph Haschka's review, but want to add that the reason the book is "repetitive" is that the short chapters (around 23 in all) are clearly meant to be read by themselves, so some repetition is necessary. Also, as confirmed by Haschka, I felt the book was ghostwritten, by a good ghostwriter, in that the ghostwriter 'stepped into the shoes' of ...

Fodor's Bangkok's 25 Best, 4th Edition (25 Best)1 review
Fodor's

Fodor's, 2007

Concise, easy to read
I like this guidebook. It is small in size and easy to carry. The format is colorful and includes lots of photos. The type is large enough to read easily. There is a fold-out map as well as a regular map in a plastic envelope in the back. I haven't been to Bangkok yet, but what I've read seems in line with what I've read elsewhere. I'm be in Bangkok for 4 days in November and this seems ...

Wallpaper City Guide: Bangkok (Wallpaper City Guide Bangkok)2 reviews
Editors of Wallpaper Magazine

Phaidon Press, 2006

Different from Luxe City Guides, but less grating, too ...
Reviewer "Ikat" has a valid point: the Wallpaper City Guides (WCG) are not comprehensive, and there is a bit of an extended travel magazine article aspect to them: however, I like WCG's differences from Luxe City Guides. Luxe engages in snarky comments and its prose (rather like a slick, smug club kid writing for middle-aged wannabee hipsters with bottomless pockets) is of a sort that I've ...
