The Survivors Club
This was one of the most fascinating books I've ever read . . . couldn't put it down until I was finished reading it. It's amazing how the mind and body work together under extreme stress and pressure, especially when you know what to expect and how to cope with emergency situations. I purchased 7 copies of the book and gave them to graduating seniors this year.

This book is a "must read" classic.
This charming little book catches the essence of Thoreau. This is a new publication of an well-worn and inspiring little book. If you think you just dont't "get" Thoreau, just try this book.

unbelievable good read
I read a lot of books - this was a book club pick, You will not stop thinking about this story for a long time - and you will tell everyone about it. I would write more but previous reviews have covered it well - I just want it to keep a high review on amazon as I think this is a great way to judge a book and this one is a MUST READ!!!

Fantastic Book. Author Knows his S...
I have read every book on survival that I could get my hands on in the last 4 years, and this one really hits the mark. If you read a lot of these type of books, there will be a lot of information you already know, but like always, you will learn something new. If it is your first, it is a great eye-opener. The information is Rock Solid. If you only buy one book make it this one! If you want to ...

A Walk in the Woods
Bill Bryson's sense of humor will make you laugh out loud if you are an Anglophile and even if you are not. Bill Bryson is an accomplished travel writer and loves to walk and relate to people. (See "Notes on a Small Island" and "In a Sunburned Country" also). In this age of the automobile, it's refreshing to find someone who actually puts his hiking boots on and talks to people. I suppose some ...

Interesting, but not exactly what I was expecting
I have to hand it to Spencer Wells. He's a master at explaining scientific data and making a subject that might seem dry and academic come alive. In Pandora's Seed: The Unforeseen Cost of Civilization he takes on the topic of early man's transition from hunter-gatherer to an argicultural basis 10,000 years ago during the Neolithic revolution. Using his background in population genetics, Wells ...

A Must Read Book!
I was given this book by a good friend of mine in 2004. When he visits me in Seattle we climb mountains, we drink good beer - and we bike every day he is in town. He is not sentimental in the least, but gave me this book with that stoic glare that perked my interest. Well - I am reading 'It's Not About the Bike' now for the third time lol! Right before Lance rides one last time in the Tour I ...

This is a book to OWN not borrow.
This is an excellent reference. Period. This is not a book you borrow from a friend or library, read through and return - it should be a tangible addition to your gear. It is not a novel, you are the main character and the situation is dire. Bug Out is a no-nonsense reference that every prepared (or intending to prepare) person should have. This book is not just for people who take being ...

Great "Personal" Account
Amazingly I could never recall seeing any news items on this Everest tragedy in 1996. I must have been 'under a rock'-no pun intended. I first heard of this calamity when reading another great adventure book "A Teacup In A Storm", wherein the author gives a several page (and gripping) synopsis of the events of that fateful day. This lead me to finally purchase this book, and I believe the ...

A Glorious Romp Through the Fields and the Orchards
This book is absolutely hands down the best piece of non-fiction I have ever read. I think I love it so much because the 4 main chapters (the apple, the tulip, cannabis and the potato) are related to the human desires for sweetness (the apple) beauty (the tulip) changing consciousness (cannabis) and control (the potato). Linking in these human desires and expressing them through plants is just an ...

A post-mortem and an adventure story.
This book gives you the sense that you are on the mountain, facing the struggle, and also a sense that you are in a laboratory, taking apart the decisions and the details and finding out why things went so wrong, so badly, on K-2. I picked up the book and started reading it out loud to my son. After he went to bed, I stayed up and read half the night. This is very compelling. How could ...

A Welcome New Chapter in the George Bird Grinnell Story
Considering George Bird Grinnell's impact on conservation, fair treatment of the American Indian, and the national park movement - and those are but three of his many accomplishments - the lack of a full biography of his life seems downright peculiar. Since I first ran into his name more than a decade ago when I moved into an apartment building named Grinnell and wondered who or what "Grinnell" ...

A Beautiful Introduction to Ants
Mark W. Moffett is one of those lucky souls who knew from childhood what he wanted to do and spent his life doing it. "My first memory is of ants," is the beginning sentence in his _Adventures Among Ants: A Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions_ (University of California Press). He was watching ants in his backyard scampering away with the breadcrumbs he had given them. I have exactly the ...

Wonderful Reference Book
This is a well organized book with fascinating details about a variety of animals, their habits, and historical "meanings" about possible messages when they appear in your life. The book doesn't pretend to be a one-size fits all about what a certain animal might mean when it appears in your dreams, or your life, especially unexpectedly. What it does do is give you plenty of things to think of ...

Should be a text book in 8th Grade
This book and/or material should be mandatory for lower grade students to learn. It is unreal what is taught and believed today about our two continents when Columbus arrived. The stupidity of the Europeans was just another item to add to the list besides greed, murder, conquer, etc. Mann wrote an excellent book on the up-to-date happenings in uncovering the truth of our ancient Americas. I ...
