The Polish Biographical Dictionary
Stanley S. Sokol

Bolchazy-Cardu Publishers, 1992

Though Poles have played an important role in world history for more than 1,000 years, reference books devoted to the accomplishments of these men and women have been virtually nonexistent. Until now, the only book on the subject was Stephen P. Mizwa's Great Men and Women of Poland, published in 1942 and profiling only 30 subjects. That void has been filled with the publication of The Polish Biographical Dictionary. The product of more ...

The Tremendous World I Have Inside My Head: Franz Kafka: A Biographical Essay2 reviews
Louis Begley

Atlas & Co., 2008

The bearable lightness of being (and reading) Kafka
Thanks largely to Max Brod and scores of subsequent literary commentators who read Franz Kafka through Beckettesque lenses, the image of Kafka most of us grew up with is of a tortured, self-loathing, desperately unhappy and hopelessly ill prophet who'd looked into the abyss, recognized the futility of existence and the absence of God, and tried to write about it in allegorical tales in which he's ...

Merriam-Webster's Pocket Biographical Dictionary (Pocket Reference Library)1 review
Merriam-Webster

Merriam-Webster, 1996

A Perfect Three-Dollar Book
You couldn't ask more of a book that fits into a shirt pocket. Thousands of entries with pronunciations, dates, and even parts of speech. For instance, if you might want to describe someone as Comtian, then you'll not only know what Comte did and when he did it, but you'll also know how to spell the adjective. History is swarming with too many figures to remember; it's nice to have them all ...

Merriam-Webster's Biographical Dictionary5 reviews
Merriam-Webster

Merriam-Webster, 1995

As good as it gets
If the browser in Jacksonville had read the preface, he or she would have discovered that the dictionary does not cover living persons. So as estimable as Mr Crystal, et al, surely are, they aren't as yet eligible for inclusion. That aside, the book is as accurate as any reasonable person could need it to be and as complete as it can be without becoming unwieldy. And the price is excellent.

The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz2 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

Essential jazz reference book
Back in the mid-1960s, as a high schooler just discovering jazz, I found a copy of Feather's "Encyclopedia of Jazz (1960)"; it was a revelation and fostered my enthusiasm and knowledge of the music and musicians. I still have it. But this completely new book is just as good, if not better. It contains brief biographical entries on 3,300 musicians covering all eras, styles, and genres under the ...

A Biographical Dictionary Of Musicians5 reviews
Theodore Baker

Baker Press, 2007

A very useful and extremely fun book to have if you love classical music
This book is really indispensable for anyone who cares deeply about classical music. It is a fabulous reference for almost all the composers you can think of and many you have never heard of, many historically important performers, musicologists, theorists, and lots of other great information. Since it is a single volume handy reference the articles tend to be concise and very informative. You ...

The New Biographical Dictionary of Film: Expanded and Updated40 reviews
David Thomson

Knopf, 2004

For Movie Buffs
I recommend this book for all serious movie fans. It's a great reference containing brief biographies and film credits of most of the notable actors, directors, and producers from the silent era to the present. It also includes critical commentary on the people and films mentioned. Unlike most reference works, this book is by no means dry or "safe" in its comments. It reflects a distinct ...

The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music (Harvard University Press Reference Library)4 reviews

Belknap Press, 1996

Comprehensive and Inexpensive
One word. Wow! This book, combined with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, makes a great resource for serious musicians, amateurs, and students alike. The near 6000 entries make this reference the best for its price. I've used the Baker on several occasions. While the Baker is certainly more comprehensive, a glance at its price (~$90) is enough to make one think twice. The Harvard ...

From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya: A Biographical History of Christian Missions14 reviews
Ruth A. Tucker

Zondervan, 2004

Informative, Entertaining and Eloquent
The book is well organized and easy to use. The content is well researched and concise without feeling rushed and choppy. In stark contrast to most surveys of missiological history, the author actually keeps her audience's attention from front to back. Also a contrast to many missions biographies, Tucker finds the balance between a book that reads like fiction and one that reads like an ...

Biographical Dictionary of Public Administration
Patricia Moss Wigfall, Behrooz Kalantari

Greenwood Press, 2000

Complementing texts that introduce students to the major theories of public administration, this biographical dictionary introduces the reader to the individuals who originated or had a significant impact on those theories. Including subjects from a spectrum of disciplines and from such diverse areas as organizational theory, personnel, and budgeting, the book covers the original pioneers and their contemporaries. A distinct crystallization ...

Out of the Shadows: A Biographical History of African American Athletes1 review

University of Arkansas Press, 2008

Contributors are top sports history writers and their essays examine the close connections between race, prejudice, and sport.
Thirteen original essays provide an in-depth biographical focus on both famous and lesser-known Afro-American athletes from the 19th century to modern times, and is a key pick for college-level collections specializing in Afro-American studies or sports history. Here are surveys that link athletic endeavors to social issues and politics, examining the effects of segregation on ambition and ...

It is divided into several major divisions: "Promoters and Interpreters," "Theologians and Historians,""Theorists and Strategists," and "Administrators." The Ramessid period in Egypt (ca. 1290-1075 B.C.E.) corresponds to the Late Bronze Age, a time of great change both in Egypt and the Near East. This period of empire, dominated by the figure of Ramesses II, witnessed crucial developments in art, language, and religious display. Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education: A Biographical Introduction (4th Edition)1 review
Gerald L. Gutek

Prentice Hall, 2004

Book o.k. Amazon's sale presentation terrible!
The book is average for texts of this type. However, Amazon's presentation of the book for prospective customers is terrible! Unlike many other books they sell, they DO NOT allow you to see a table of contents, index, or sample pages. They seem to want the customer to "buy a pig in a poke." That's Amazon's fault--not the author's. I passed on purchase, not because the book is bad, but ...
