Mathematical Biology (Biomathematics)

Excellent book on the subject
A few decades ago mathematical biology consisted mostly of evolutionary and predator-prey models. This has changed dramatically in recent years with the advent of computational biology and gene sequencing projects. The applications of mathematics to biology are now exploding and this book is an excellent example of that. The book could best be described as the application of nonlinear dynamical ...

Consice and well written review of field biology statistics
As a graduate student doing field biology, I found this book to be very usefull. It is a great refresher for those who have had a biometrics course before, and I will be using it as quick reference for a long time. It is much easier to read then other biometrics books. Great buy!

Excellent Nontechnical Coverage of Survival Analysis
Applied Survival Analysis is an excellent book for someone seeking a non-mathematicial explanation of survival analysis. The book covers the motivation behind the development of survival analysis, estimation of survival curves, the Cox proportionial hazards, and some parametric models. The book also covers the major methods used in variable selection, model building, and diagnostics. Someone ...

different approach to teaching biostatistics in health sciences
This very recent book is already getting rave reviews from health professionals particularly in the US Navy where Dr. Riffenburgh is known. I recently met Dr. Riffenburgh at an ASA chapter meeting in San Diego and again at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Indianapolis this past August. The Foreword by Vice Admiral Richard Nelson sets the stage for the book and praises Dr. Riffenburgh. I am a ...

Best Bostatistics Book Ever AND It's Back In Print
I teach and do statistics for a living. Don't let the humor fool you. Despite being the most (only?) fun to read statistics book, it also has more thorough (and readable and usable) coverage coverage of the basics and advanced methods than any other book its size. It explains both underlying principles and practical applications. Readable, usable, thorough AND funny. Who would have ...

Comprehensive, valuable reference
This is an excellent, exceptionally comprehensive, and well-structured reference on a wide range of inferential tests and measures of association, which is ideal for the applied scientist. After a few useful introductory chapters that provide definitions and outline the main concepts involved in inferential statistics, the various tests are covered chapter by chapter. Each chapter contains ...
Clinical Trials: A Methodologic Perspective

presents clinical trials issues and methodology clearly
This book is very unique. Basic statistical concepts are clearly presented but only those concepts that are important in clinical trials. The author presents all the issues with clinical trials including ethical issues with some historical perspective. Principles of randomization and statistical design are clearly presented. It offers discussion of Bayesian techniques and meta-analyses, ...
Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers

Very good book, examples used bit too technical
Very good book for beginners and experienced researchers! I haven't come across any other book that actually describes how you should write a biomedical paper. The only critique is that the examples used are too technical for non-biomedical researchers, this makes it hard to understand the examples. But even if you do not have a biomedical background you will learn a lot from this book.

essential book for ecologists
This book was one of the best purchases I made upon starting my graduate career. It is extremely well written and de-mystifies the process of hypothesis testing and experimental design and analysis. I consider this book a must for anyone starting out in the field of ecology who has questions about experimental design or analysis.

Great coverage of extensions to important models
Terry Therneau is a research statistician at the Mayo Clinic and Patricia Grambsch is a Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Minnesota. The Cox proportional hazards model has been one of the key methods for analyzing survival data with covariates for the last 25 years. Proportionality is a key assumption that limits its use. There has long been a need to find methods which diagnose ...
Fundamentals of Modern Statistical Methods: Substantially Improving Power and Accuracy

elementary, delightful with a modern touch
This is a marvelous introductory statistics book. In the first five chapters Wilcox presents the classical statistical methods with simplicity and great care. Emphasis is properly placed on the assumptions of the methods and the fact that many times important assumptions are violated in practice. This is all done in the first five chapters. Then in chapters 6 - 12 he provides alternative modern ...

Stimualting book for those interested in System Dynamics
The book is extremely well written and is so far the best attempt by any author(s)to achieve the right mix of theory and practice in the field of system dynamics. The organization of contents of the book is unique and it highlights the potential use of system dynamics principles for modeling a variety of hydro, ecological, environmental and engineered systems. The principles of system dynamics ...

delightful introduction to probability
Professor Isaac has written a book for those interested in learning about probability. It is at a high school algebra level although knowledge of calculus could be helpful at times. He starts with the now famous Monte Hall problem and provides the most lucid explanation I have seen to date. This is a great way to introduce important probability notions such as sample space and probability models ...

functional data analysis by example
In 1997 Ramsay and Silverman wrote a standard text that stands out as a classic book teaching the functional approach. With this new book they take the approach of teaching by example. Each of chapters 2 -12 present a case study first. The one on childhood growth is standard fair but they also present unusual cases such as modeling a juggler and analyzing handwriting. In eachcase they show how ...

Not a big fan of behavioral science, but this book makes it bearable by focusing on what you'll be tested on and helping you distinguish similar conditions from each other. Good biostatistics section also included. Great information and great figures to help you understand the info. Strongly recommend - the rest of the series is also outstanding.
