Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon15 reviews
Melissa Anelli

Pocket, 2008

A Fantastic History
I am reading the most wonderfully, magnificent, incredible and enjoyable book I have read in ages. It is a breath of fresh air and I'm thrilled that I picked it up. I'm talking about Harry, A History by Melissa Anelli. I remember the first time I read Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone. I had ignored the buzz surrounding Harry Potter for a long time. I remember thinking: No book ...

Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty26 reviews
Jeff Pearlman

Harper, 2008

Highly readable tale of the 90's Cowboy dynasty
Great job by the young writer Jeff Pearlman. Following up on the equally readable "The Bad Guys Won", Pearlman writes a lengthy (thanks, Jeff!) description of the Dallas Cowboys team that won three Super Bowls in four years in the early to mid 90's. Great stuff! Pearlman tells the whole tale: both the good and the bad. And there was a lot of bad. Drug use, prostition, violence, ...

My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to Pregnancy169 reviews
Ian Davis

Three Rivers Press, 1999

Fantastic!
My husband blazed through this book in a day, laughing through most of it. Although there were a handful of topics I thought were missing, it was thorough enough for him. I plan to buy this book for every first-time dad I know in the future!

Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys109 reviews
Dan Kindlon, Michael Thompson

Ballantine Books, 2000

Raising a son
A big support to re-convince you that teaching emotions and love to your son is a bigger asset than teaching how to fight. Good to know that it will pay off when he is older, as a happy man.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier417 reviews
Ishmael Beah

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008

A Boy's Innocence Destroyed by War
A Long Way Gone: Memoir of a Boy Solider is a book that exposes the horrors of war from a child's perspective. Yet, unlike the account of an observer, this power book is the story of a boy who fought in the Sierra Leon Civil War. As a reader, it is impossible to be emotionally callous when immersing oneself in this book's pages, since its author presents a picturesque, emotive, and humane ...

Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons14 reviews
Meg Meeker

Regnery Publishing, 2008

An excellent guide to raising happly boys who become healthy and productive men
As the father of three daughters, I really admired Meg Meeker's "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters". Since I also have three sons, I was happy to read her new book "Boys Should Be Boys". Note that her first book had 10 secrets every father should know. This book has 7 secrets to raising healthy sons. I guess boys are simpler creatures. The main thrust of the book is that boys need to ...

The Trouble with Boys: A Surprising Report Card on Our Sons, Their Problems at School, and What Parents and ...15 reviews
Peg Tyre

Crown, 2008

Why are boys falling behind?
This book is a follow on to the author's Newsweek cover story about the widening gap between boys and girls academic performance in the United States. She makes the case that, just as we rallied in the 90s to help girls catch up to boys in math and science, we need to do the same for boys in reading and writing. The book cites a great deal of research from schools across the United States to show ...

Boy In the Striped Pajamas (Movie Tie-in Edition)101 reviews
John Boyne

David Fickling Books, 2008

thought provoking and touching
I ordered this book without being sure what to expect. When I got it, I read it all in one night, as I couldn't put it down. Seeing the horrors of the Holocaust through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy puts a twist on it that I'd never thought of before. The story pulls you in, you can't help but feel for Bruno and Shmuel. The author does a wonderful job of writing with a child's naive ...

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family451 reviews
Dave Pelzer

HCI, 1997

This is a great follow up!
I also enjoyed this book as much as A Child Called "IT". This also made me cry as much as as the first one. I could not put it down as well.

Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West309 reviews
Cormac McCarthy

Vintage, 1992

A very good, dark read...
I read this in 2001, at the suggestion of a good friend, and completely enjoyed the book. It's pretty dark, but is a compelling tale of a man's journey in the old west. I especially enjoyed the sinister character that keeps re-appearing and could be more than just a man.. seems like the same character turns up in lots of Cormac McCarthy's books. Overall, I would recommend this book

Samuel Eaton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Boy5 reviews
Kate Waters

Scholastic Paperbacks, 1996

Values for today from a tale of 1627
This is a wonderful, wonderful book. It will help you teach your children about hard work, perseverance, and family. My children want it read to them again and again. Young Samuel Eaton (a historical character) is looking forward to his first chance to help his father bring in the crops. He finds the work incredibly hard, and the coarse grain raises bad blisters on his hands. But he ...

Lawn Boy18 reviews
Gary Paulsen

Wendy Lamb Books, 2007

Good read!
This book was great because he won his own prizefighter and it was really cool. I learned that if you make a lot of money and hire employees, you can make more money and not have to do much work. You can also hire people so that they can have a job and make money. I learned never to keep a secret.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name104 reviews
Sally Lloyd-Jones

ZonderKidz, 2007

Wonderful, loving storybook Bible!
We have now read through this Bible 5 times with my now 6 year old son. We gave it to him when he was 4, and he has asked--more like begged--to read a story from it each and every night since then. This is the most loving, gently written children's story book Bible that I have ever come across. They are all written in a way that a child can relate to and understand. And I love that at the ...

Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction121 reviews
David Sheff

Houghton Mifflin Co, 2008

Very real and honest... a MUST read for parents of teens
This well written book will help many people, and I believe the author was very brave and honest. This book helped me to learn how to 'let go'..even if your son or daughter 'just drinks' or 'just smokes pot' .. this book will help you. I want to thank the author for opening up his personal life; there is such a stigma to this kind of illness. Many small minded people can not grasp the ...

The Demonata #7: Death's Shadow (Demonata)
Darren Shan

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2008

As the once-human beasts advance, I try draining magic from the air but there's virtually nothing to tap into. In my own time, these creatures would have been simple to deal with. Here, it's going to be difficult. The lead werewolf snaps at the female. With a howl, she leaps. I unleash the spell as she jumps. It's a choking spell. If it doesn't work, I won't know much about it - she'll be on me in a second, and I'm defenseless. With Beranabus, ...

THE BOYS VOLUME 3: GOOD FOR THE SOUL (The Boys) (The Boys)3 reviews
Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson

Dynamite Entertainment, 2008

Garth Ennis kicks more butt!
The Boys is not for the faint of heart. You've got nudity, violence and gore galore in this episode mixed with some bad taste to boot. But that's not what this is about. This issue of the Boys picks up and really fleshes out the universe so much more. In past episodes, you learned a little bit more about the corporate influence that pervades their world. In this one, you'll learn all ...
