The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence167 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 1999

I had it for a while...
... honestly I did not read it yet, but I did take art classes that were derived from the book, and I was amazed at how some of the techniques (though unorthodox) come out to be pretty good exercises as well as drawings. I just never had the time to continue with them on my own. Not very helpful of a review, is it? well these are my few words, the rest is up to you.

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School (Book & DVD)40 reviews
John Medina

Pear Press, 2008

Outstanding tips with a sense of humor
This author, a well educated neuroscientist, has that rare ability to combine scientific wisdom, common sense and a sense of humor into a cocktail that goes down easy and creates a very pleasant feeling, but doesn't make you stupid. You then know what you need to do to be healthier, live longer and feel better. The rest is up to you.

Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, ...136 reviews
Daniel G. Amen

Three Rivers Press, 1999

Fabulous book
This is a most helpful book. It is the only real help I have found on a most complex and difficult subject. What a revelation to find useful information for a lay person to use to help themselves and loved ones. His ideas are simply explained and extremely useful and, best of all, they work. I highly recommend this book.

Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform ...69 reviews
Sharon Begley

Ballantine Books, 2007

Very insightful!
Sharon Begley's "Train Your Mind Change Your Brain" does a fine job of exploring the science of neuroplasticity which upends long thought beliefs that the brain becomes hardwired early in life and can't be changed other than through physical techniques like medication, etc. Rather, by concentrating one's thinking in certain ways, actual physical changes can be effected in the brain. That is, the ...

The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science (James H. ...99 reviews
Norman Doidge

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Recommended to sooo many people
I first listened to this book on my audible download and was so impressed I ordered a copy for myself and two copies to share with the counselors that I supervise. I also have been recommending it to a lot of the parents whose children are my clients. I work for children's services in Mental Health. This stuff is exciting.

This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession106 reviews
Daniel J. Levitin

Plume/Penguin, 2007

One of the best books you can find on the science of music!
This book was found, as many of my great finds, on the shelves of a used-book store. The book has traveled around in my car with me as I go from school to my job as a voice teacher. It has been loaned out to music professors, and is now very well worn. I strongly recommend this book for musicians and music lovers alike. It is beautifully written in a way that nearly anyone can understand, ...

The Female Brain115 reviews
Louann Brizendine

Broadway, 2007

Well researched and written
I get it now! This book enlightened me to why girls/women do what they do and feel and think the way they do. Confirms what's going through my mind. Does some gender comparison which helps me to understand my teenage son better and accept some of his behavior. A great gift for friends struggling with teenage daughters.

The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation5 reviews
Drew Westen

PublicAffairs, 2008

Want to Win? Read this Book!
Drew Westen's The Political Brain describes why Democrats routinely lose to Republicans despite being right on the issues. Democrats approach elections like job interviews, whereas Republicans see elections as dates. Specifically, Democrats foolishly believe that voters are "dispassionate" calculators of relative utility whereas Republicans understand that to win the mind you must first capture ...

Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior58 reviews
Jeffrey M. Schwartz, Beverly Beyette

Harper Perennial, 1997

Simple, effective, amazing...
After years of psychotherapy and countless medication changes I found it a losing battle that seemed to have no end. My psychiatrist had moved out of town and I was assigned a new psychiatrist. At our first meeting she suggested I sounded like I had OCD. Being that everyone claims to have OCD I was initially thinking "oh great another meaningless diagnosis". She then referred me to a specialist ...

New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook: Guided Practice in the Five Basic Skills of Drawing36 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 2002

drawing workbook
i have read the book drawing on the right side of the brain. what this book is can be also taken right out of the original book. it is just more of what it says a work book. or you could just use some drawing pad to do the exercises in it. It takes out of the book the lessons, so save your money and just by the book. which by the way actually is also a very useful book to learn and understand ...

The Big Book of Brain Games: 1,000 PlayThinks of Art, Mathematics & Science6 reviews

A superbly designed book of puzzles. You will find all types of "brain games" with different degrees of difficulty clearly marked. Children with Starving Brains: A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder86 reviews

The Mindful Brain: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being13 reviews
Daniel J. Siegel

W. W. Norton, 2007

Hands down the best book on this topic.....
I've always been a fan of this author, he is a scholar, excellent writer and based on his writing a wise individual. What makes this book especially good from my perspective is the balancing of subjective information from the world's wisdom traditions and his own interior experience with their physical correlates i.e. rigorous science without reducing either to the other. This is extremely ...

Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind93 reviews
V. S. Ramachandran, Sandra Blakeslee

Harper Perennial, 1999

Absolutely Fantastic Book
While this book may not be for everyone, I believe that most people will have a hard time putting it down. Ramachandran's ability to explain absurdly complicated concepts with simple language and simple methods is just one of the facets of his genius. After readking Phantoms I burned through at least 4 other books he wrote, but still Phantoms is by far the best.

Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich23 reviews
Jason Zweig

Simon & Schuster, 2008

Sobering experience
"Know thyself" was the recommendation from the Greek philosophers. This books leads you to that same objective. The impressive difference is the Greeks did not have MRIs to scan their brains when we were thinking deep thoughts. Zweig does two very important things. He brings science to the process of making investments. It's not quant models of the S&P, but an understanding of the ...

The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force42 reviews
Jeffrey M. Schwartz, Sharon Begley

Harper Perennial, 2003

A fascinating exploration of mindfulness and neuroplasticity
This book was probably the most fascinating book I read about neuroscience and that's saying something since I find all of them fascinating. In this book the author explains neuroplasticity and how it continues to work in the brains of an adult as well as a child. The author also reviews many of the neuroscience experiments and projects done by various people as well as how those projects have ...
