CSS: The Definitive Guide27 reviews
Eric Meyer

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

Very authoritative and complete
Before purchasing this book, I had purchased about a half dozen books on css, one from the same author. I was really surprised to find new ways to use css that I hadn't learned in the other books. Each topic is discussed completely and in detail. For a reference on css, this book is the best I've found.

Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual19 reviews
Matthew MacDonald

Pogue Press, 2005

Absolutely great book!
I have been searching for a good, fairly insightful, starter book on what to do to set up a website, that wasn't too advanced or way to boring. This is it! The author knows his stuff, brings it into the learning forum in such a way that you are excited to read the next section and re-read for additional insights previously completed sections. I am going to use this book, and will probably ...

Dojo: The Definitive Guide9 reviews
Matthew A. Russell

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2008

Definitely THE definitive guide on Dojo!
Dojo has been a staple in the all-inclusive JavaScript toolkit world for a while now, providing a buffet of useful (and not so useful) features that any web developer should at least consider before tackling a Web 2.0/Ajax-based project. Dojo is actually very easy to use and can dramatically increase developer's productivity - after the steep learning curve that is. I have been using Dojo (and ...

Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML233 reviews
Eric Freeman, Elisabeth Freeman

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

Very helpful book
I found this book very helpful. It teaches in a way that really works for me. I will probably try other Head First books to fill my needs.

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide277 reviews
David Flanagan

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

Almost Too Thorough. Not the best Choice for Beginners/Creatives
This is the book all the JS rockstars out there tend to recommend to people. I don't think it's for everybody personally. It's very thorough and explains JS and its various incarnations at a high level of intricacy that I wouldn't recommend to beginners who are easily distracted (i.e. more heavily creative-brained designers). I'm fairly evenly brained myself and I occasionally found myself ...

Learning ActionScript 3.0: A Beginner's Guide36 reviews
Rich Shupe, Zevan Rosser

O'Reilly/Adobe Developer Library, 2008

Explains AS2 to AS3 Migration Points
I think the book does a great job explaining all of the intricate details of OOP for experienced Actionscript users. I have used AS2 for a long time and I was very frustrated how so much had changed in AS3 and I never seemed to find a good book to explain each change. This book does that and more. In addition to spelling out the advantages of using AS3 and OOP in general, it even takes things ...

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web: Designing Large-Scale Web Sites41 reviews
Louis Rosenfeld, Peter Morville

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

A lifesaver
As project manager, I was in a bind when our contract information architect failed to understand the complexities of our matrixed business model and client base. Rosenfeld's book helped me design a IA for our 700 page HTML site that has since been described as simple, intuitive, a no-brainer. What great compliments! The book describes basic theories of IA in general (i.e. book indexes ...

Take the Cold Out of Cold Calling11 reviews
Sam Richter

Beaver's Pond Press, 2008

Will keep this one for many years!
I just finished reading, and before I even finished I had success. Will recommend to anyone who wants to increase networking skills and research ability for projects, clients or prospects. This will be a powerful tool for many different levels of education.

Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics33 reviews
Jennifer Niederst Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2007

Robust start to (X)HTML/CSS
I rate this book with 5 stars for being a solid introduction to (X)HTML and CSS and for being clear, easy to follow, and colourful. I disagree with the previous reviewer BB, who said the book was not for beginners and rated it with one star. He mentions Jennifer N. Robbins uses vocabulary she hasn't defined before. Well, if he's talking about terms like web browser, web server, or link, I ...

CSS Pocket Reference: Visual Presentation for the Web (Pocket Reference)7 reviews
Eric Meyer

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2007

Great little helper
I suggest reading the definitive guide first but I keep this pocket version on my desk (well, I know it's around here somewhere). A useful quick reference for web designers that have abandoned the outmoded world of tables-based layout.

Wicket in Action (In Action)3 reviews
Martijn Dashorst, Eelco Hillenius

Manning Publications, 2008

Great Book!
This is a great book that really gives a in-depth overview of Wicket. I've been working with Wicket for a couple of years and had to suffer through figuring things out from examples and mailing lists. This book is the definitive guide. I've already learned several new things from it. Many thanks to the authors who went to great lengths to get this book out!

Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant4 reviews
William R. Stanek

Microsoft Press, 2007

A must have for IIS 7
I've had IIS 7 Administrator's Pocket Consultant for several months now. I've read it cover to cover and refer to it all the time. I'm always amazed at how much information William can pack into his pocket consultants and especially with this one. William starts out by telling you IIS 7 is completely different from its predecessors and then showing what you need to know right away to be ...

The Google Story: Inside the Hottest Business, Media, and Technology Success of Our Time94 reviews
David Vise, Mark Malseed

Delta, 2006

A company that provides a "Perk" for a good reason!
David Vise captures the true concepts and ideas of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The reader can not lose their focus with the research, knowledge of the founders purpose within each paragraph or for that matter each chapter. I highly recommended this book to anyone who has the curiosity for business. The mixture of knowlegde the author describes on how each and every employee is cared for creates ...

Web Design for ROI: Turning Browsers into Buyers & Prospects into Leads26 reviews
Lance Loveday, Sandra Niehaus

New Riders Press, 2007

a great common-sense checklist for page layouts
The authors open with a statement that this book is not a checklist. However, I beg to differ. Once you begin to read through the chapters on category pages, individual pages, checkout pages, and so on, you'll realize that they are addressing the main concerns of building pages that properly convert, step by step. If you run a web site, and you're interested in learning how experienced ...

Dreamweaver 8: The Missing Manual39 reviews
David Sawyer McFarland

Pogue Press, 2005

Great for impatient people
I like to just jump in. Hate reading instruction manuals, find most of them little better than the cause of a good nights sleep. This book is my first exception! Sure I have still jumped in but have also worked my way through this book from the beginning and am finding the answers to my problems as I create them. Also finding that the book is interesting enough in itself, that I am avoiding ...

GWT in Practice7 reviews
Robert Cooper, Charlie Collins

Manning Publications, 2008

A great book on software development as well as GWT
For starters: I am one of the pilot developers in my company (a large Fortune 100 Financial Institution) doing GWT development. We are about to release our first product to the business. So I've spent the last 18 months or so learning and beating my way through GWT. In the process, I've bought all the GWT books that are out there. Straight to the point: this is the best one out there. ...

HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide (6th Edition)145 reviews
Chuck Musciano, Bill Kennedy

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

I use it everyday - the older version
I have the 3rd edition and use it most everyday in my job. I figured it would be a bit outdated so I bought this latest version. The new version is essentially the exact same as the old version and I feel like I wasted my money. It's also missing the handy quick reference the older version had. However, if you don't have an earlier version, I would definitely recommend it. It's indispensable.

Designing Web Navigation: Optimizing the User Experience14 reviews
James Kalbach

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2007

Your users will thank you for reading this...
The ability to navigate a web site can make or break your user's experience. I learned far more than I thought even existed in the book Designing Web Navigation: Optimizing the User Experience by James Kalbach. It's obviously more than just putting a list of links down the left side of the screen... Contents: Part 1 - Foundations of Web Navigation: Introducing Web Navigation; Understanding ...

PHP Cookbook (Cookbooks (O'Reilly))35 reviews
Adam Trachtenberg, David Sklar

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

Great semi-advanced updated book.
It is pretty good. Especially for the people who worked a little bit on php but not an expert yet. (That is me.)
