Black Roots: A Beginners Guide To Tracing The African American Family Tree7 reviews
Tony Burroughs

Fireside, 2001

"Trapped"- One Way or Another
Black Roots delivers far beyond the stated expectations. Not only is it a one of a kind comprehensive guide for the new genealogist, but serves as a corrective resource for the more advanced researcher. Unlike traditional guides, Mr.Burroughs'largely first person, experiential accounts are so genuine, that he effortlessly, fervently and even humorously, challenges the reader to explore self, ...

The Letters of William S. Burroughs: 2Volume I: 1945-19597 reviews
William S. Burroughs

Viking Adult, 1993

Burroughs as a man, not as a legend
That Kirkus review is cheap, trite and obvious. "Godfather of Grunge"? "MTV generations' idea of a literay outlaw"? What's that mean? They were right when they said he didn't come off as a literary "fella"--why? because Literature is phony and an obstruction to truth--"All that is literature has fallen from me, thank God," wrote Henry Miller, and Burroughs exemplifies that. He was interested ...

The Herbert Huncke Reader10 reviews
Herbert Huncke

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 1998

Everyone should take notice
There are few authors I feel everyone should read but no matter who you are Herbert Huncke should be read. He is one of the best storytellers/writers I have had the privilege of reading. His stories of sex, streets, drugs, life and friends bring a humanity to what may be considered by many obscure, degenerate, or just plain disgusting, but Hunckeŭs stories I believe are non of these. They are ...

The Outlaw of Torn7 reviews
Edgar Rice Burroughs

Amereon Ltd, 1999

A great swordplay pulp novel from Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known for his Tarzan novels and better known for his Mars, Pellucidar and other science-fiction series, but "The Outlaw of Torn" is one of his best pulp fiction yarns. It was actually the second story Burroughs wrote. Apparently the editor at "All-Story," which had published "Tarzan of the Apes," suggested ERB write it and then rejected the story when it was ...

Tarzan of the Apes : Three Complete Novels8 reviews
Edgar Rice Burroughs

Wings, 1998

genuinely exciting and enormous fun to read
There are certain books and authors that have an inordinate impact on our lives. Often as not, their particular significance to us as individuals extends far beyond that which they would have to anyone else and sometimes, if we return to them at a different point in our own lives, it can be hard to recapture why they should have seemed so momentous in the first place. One of the authors who ...

Literary Outlaw: The Life and Times of William S. Burroughs10 reviews
Ted Morgan

Avon Books (P), 1990

FIND THIS BOOK!
When I read this book in 1990, or thereabouts, I had only read William Burroughs' book Junky, and I had read nothing by Jack Kerouac or Allen Ginsberg. After I finished reading Literary Outlaw, by Ted Morgan, I was so fascinated that I read all of Burroughs' novels, and several books by Kerouac and Ginsberg. I also read two more Burroughs biographies, just to get more information on this weird ...

No Law Against Love14 reviews
Leanne Burroughs, Deborah MacGillivray, ...

Highland Press, 2006

Really Good Value
I bought this book based on the reviews, and I was not sorry. All of the stories were good, but I especially loved Sadie, the Shady Angel that kept me laughing. I also really enjoyed Bad Cat and No Laughing Matter. I was impressed, not only with the variety of the stories, but the quality as well. An excellent way to spend an afternoon and contribute to Breast Cancer Research at the same time.

Nova Express9 reviews
William S. Burroughs

Grove Press, 1994

thirty-six years old and still ahead of its time
Oh, this book is superb; thrilling. Burroughs' critique of media/information culture has never been more relevant (he even predicts, in 1964, the emergence of something that sounds very much like the Web - "more and more images in less space pounded down under the sex acts and torture ever took place anywhere"). Great chunks of the book function practically as a Machiavellian instruction ...

The Job: Interviews with William S. Burroughs8 reviews
Daniel Odier, William S. Burroughs

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1989

Disquietingly prescient and funny
"The Job" is a fantastic introduction to the obsessions and maverick idealism that characterize Burroughs' fiction. This is not a straight question-and-answer session; Burroughs includes liberal samples of text (his own as well as others') to illustrate his ideas. The final product is an effective, surreal manifesto urging all of us to break out of our private tunnel realities and confront social ...

Bitsy & the Mystery at Amelia Island (Bitsy Burroughs Mysteries)6 reviews

Delightful story for pre-teens
Author Vonda Skinner Skelton doesn't just know how to relate to kids-she remembers what it's like to be one! Bitsy & the Mystery at Amelia Island is a delightful story for pre-teens that will carry them through from start to finish, while subtly instilling the positive message that life is about more than money or looks. What's the Big Deal About Jesus?: *Why All the Controversy? *Is He Relevant? *Does It Matter to Me?6 reviews
John Ankerberg, Dillon Burroughs

Harvest House Publishers, 2007

Terrific apologetic about the accuracy of Jesus in the Bible
What's the Big Deal About Jesus by John Ankerburg & Dillon Burroughs is a perfect apologetic book. The authors sift through historical and archaelogical information to give readers the lowdown on what we can really know about Jesus. From Was the tomb really empty to Did Jesus say he was the Son of God? each chapter addresses a specific question raised not only by nonbelievers, but by believers ...

The Little Team That Could/the Incredible, Often Wacky Story of the Two-Time Little League World Champions5 reviews
Jeff Burroughs, Tom Hennessy

Bonus Books, 1994

Thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
The Little Team That Could was pure enjoyment. Jeff Burroughs gives an honest, balanced account of the 1992-1993 Long Beach Little League All-Star teams that reached the pinnacle of success. He describes the thrill of victory and the joy of working with young people. At the same time, he tells about the aggravation of dealing with some Little League parents, officials, and umpires. As a ...

Christmas Tail of Sampson the Silly-Looking Sock Monkey, The5 reviews
Chrysti Burroughs

Kregel Kidzone, 2005

A Christmas Classic
This book has the feel of a classic Christmas story that can be read year after year without it ever growing old. The illustrations are fun, the characters are cute, and the story is a good one. I've purchased multiple copies to give as Christmas gifts over the past two years. Truth be told, I enjoy the book just as much as the kids.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars: Shadows of a Dying World (d20/OGL Sourcebook)5 reviews
Jim Clunie, Skirmisher Game Development Group

Skirmisher Publishing LLC, 2007

Great!
Whether your campaign is set in Mars or not, this book offers a lot of great monsters. Even for your straight d20 adventure, this book has loads of psionic creatures, which I haven't seen a lot of anywhere else. I know I don't own a wizards book with too many in them. All the monsters were thought up by literary great Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Skirmisher stayed really true to his work. So whether ...

John Burroughs: An American Naturalist6 reviews
Edward Renehan

Black Dome Press, 1998

Excellent
I first got turned on to Ed Renehan when I saw him on C-SPAN discussing the book he wrote about the family of Theodore Roosevelt, entitled THE LION'S PRIDE. After enjoying LION'S PRIDE, I purchased and learned a lot from Renehan's beautifully written account of John Brown and the Harpers Ferry raid, entitled THE SECRET SIX. Then, although I'd never heard of John Burroughs, I moved onto this ...

Blue Moon Magic (Book 1 of Under the Blue Moon)6 reviews
Dawn Thompson, Deborah MacGillivray, ...

Highland Press, 2006

Super read! A keeper for sure!!
I love anthologies because you can carry the book around and read just one story in a short time, maybe while waiting for the dentist, the doctor or whatever. Not so with Blue Moon Magic. This book grabs you with the first story, hangs on through all 15 fantastic magical adventures, and keeps you turning pages. You won't want to put this one down till you've read all 15 stories. A short run down ...

The Code: Use the Laws of Manifestation to Achieve Your Highest Good5 reviews
Tony Burroughs

Weiser Books, 2008

The Secret Roadmap
Many books have been published about the Laws of Manifestation like "The Secret" and "The Power of Intention." But I consider the works of Tony Burroughs, especially this book (as well as "The Intender's Handbook" and "Highest Light Teachings") the road map, the "how to" manuals to actually being able to manifest things in your life that are for the highest good. And Tony's style of writing is ...

Deep Black6 reviews
William E. Burroughs

Berkley, 1988

Viewing 'Missing' History through the Keyhole
There are very few books that define a genre - Mr. William Burrow's, "Deep Black" is one of those amazing 'trend setting' books that will always remain a classic. Being one of the earliest books that mention surveillance and reconnaissance satellites, "Deep Black" scared the pants off of most involved in the black world of space. Many books have followed in the two decades since Deep Black - ...

Cursed from Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life of William S. Burroughs, Jr.5 reviews
William S. Burroughs Jr.

Soft Skull Press, 2006

A HOME FOR BILLY AT LAST!
After what seemed to be an amazingly long wait, Cursed From Birth, the sort of biography, sort of last lost novel of William Burroughs Jr has finally been published by those saviours at Soft Skull. And...it was well worth the wait. I am 3/4 way through and the book does not disappoint. Billy's story was alway one of tragedy, self-loathing, self-pity and probably inherited addictive behaviours. ...
