First the Egg (Caldecott Honor Book and Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book (Awards))7 reviews
Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

A concept journey: egg or chicken? chicken or egg?
Which came first--the chicken or the egg? Finally, someone is here to tell us. But the answer later. "First the egg," written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, is a Caldecott honor winner for 2008 and an honor book for the Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) Award. What makes it special? Both the artwork and the story, or actually, in this case, concepts that lead from one transformation ...

Make Way for Ducklings (Viking Kestrel Picture Books)49 reviews
Robert McCloskey

Viking Juvenile, 1941

"She taught them how to swim and dive"
This book is simply sublime. I had it as a child, got it for my own children over 25 years ago, and now am buying a copy for my new grandson. Everything about this book is wonderful!

Help a child learn to read
The Frog and Toad books have helped my 8 year old grandson learn to read--he has been having trouble and these books were so interesting and fun to him that he finally realized how reading could open up whole new worlds for him. He loves these books.

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type196 reviews
Doreen Cronin

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 2000

Click Clack Moo Cows that teach!
My students love this story (ages 7-12)! And I use it to teach students about the democratic process. This is a wonderful story about the options open to people in a democratic society. I have used it to talk about strikes, expressing your opinions and negotiations. DO my 7 year olds get all that from Click Clack Moo, not that they can articulate but they are getting it on some level. And it ...

Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book)78 reviews

Scholastic Press, 2005

Wonderful. Buy this book!
Moral philosophy for kids - and their parents. My three year old likes the stories as much as I do. The messages are delivered simply so that you take from them your own meaning to your degree of understanding. We try to read Zen Shorts in the mornings to remind us of more peaceful ways to approach the day. I really can't recommend this book enough.

What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? (Caldecott Honor Book)20 reviews
Robin Page, Steve Jenkins

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

L U C K Y T W I C E ! ! !
It is a good, informative book. Although my 9 years old son seems to be very old for this kind of reading, I still bought it for him because of the book's educational value. Surprise, surprise! - my Big Boy liked the book a lot(!) We now quiz each other about various animals... Another good book that I value a lot for its educational content is Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2 by B. Nowiki. I ...

Kitten's First Full Moon59 reviews

Greenwillow, 2004

Report and Opinion by a 4th Grade Student
This is a fun book about a kitten that is not very smart. In the book Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes, Kitten sees her first full moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. She really wants it, so she tries to get it in many different ways. At first, Kitten is sitting on the porch and sees the full moon, which she thinks is a big bowl of milk. She wants "the bowl of milk" and starts ...

Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book)77 reviews
David Wiesner

Clarion Books, 2006

Beautiful illustrations!!! Great story left to our imagination!!!
I stumbled across this book at the library. The first time I opened it up I was a bit surprised to not see any words and my 2 yr old was not interested in it either. But after I studied the beautiful illustrations, the story unfolded before me. The next time I read it to my daughter and told her the story the way I interpreted it. She likes it now and even helps tell me the story. The ...

In the Night Kitchen (Caldecott Collection)98 reviews

HarperCollins, 1996

My feelings have changed about this book over time
As a mother and a teacher, I am always looking for quality books to read to my fourth graders as well as my 3 year old daughter. Although I would never be able to read In the Night Kitchen to my class (parent complaints and such), it didn't take long for my little girl to fall in love with this book. Sadly, many children today are lacking a tremendous amount of imagination, getting caught up in ...

The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Caldecott Honor Book)12 reviews
Peter Sis

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2007

Bittersweet return.
I am a great fan of Peter Sis and collect all his books, this was my last acquisition. Being the same age and growing up in the same place, I can relate to everything he has to tell, and on top of it, between the lines my own thoughts and memories always resurface and add more dimensions to his story. My favorite of his books is the Tibet through the red box. There is an adventure, suspense, ...

A Chair for My Mother 25th Anniversary Edition (Reading Rainbow Book)19 reviews

HarperTrophy, 1984

Orange Chair For My Mother
Some children's books speak to our lives in special ways. I'm stepping away from a teacher voice to a "person teaching" talking tonight, it isn't the same exactly. Pretty close. I came from my personal past into this life, so my valuing, my struggles are mine, and I look from those eyes on what happens in my present life. It's a book that allows me to talk about how important I find it for us ...

Mouse Tales (I Can Read Book 2)20 reviews

HarperTrophy, 1978

Mouse Tales
There are seven short tales, all involving mice, and bookended by a father mouse who is telling these stories to his children at bed time, one per child. The seven stories included are: The Wishing Well, Clouds, Very Tall Mouse and Very Short Mouse, The Mouse and the Winds, The Journey, The Old Mouse, and The Bath. Of the seven, my favorite is The Wishing Well as it takes an unusual and humorous ...

Mouse Soup14 reviews

HarperTrophy, 1983

WELL THOUGHTOUT AND WELL ILLUSTRATED BOOK
This is one of those that is an absolute delight to read to and with kids. A mouse, minding his own business is caught by a weasel who of coure plans to whip up a batch of Mouse Soup. Our fast talking little mouse simply talks his way out of the dinner by telling the weasel four delightful stories, thereby distracting the weasle and at the same time, teaching the weasle a good lesson. The Red Book (Caldecott Honor Book)30 reviews
Barbara Lehman

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Kids love to tell the story
This book is for younger kids than David Weisner's so although it's not as beautiful as Weisner's picture books, my kids (5 & 4) can understand the story better. I have them tell me what's going on as we look at the pictures, and this has become one of their favorites.

Henry's Freedom Box (Caldecott Honor Book)12 reviews
Ellen Levine

Scholastic Press, 2007

Spare story of one man's struggle against slavery
This story documents the slavery and eventual freedom of one man. Henry and his brothers and sisters work for a good master. However, on his deathbed, the master gives Henry to his son, separating Henry from the rest of his family forever. Henry works well in the master's son's tobacco factory, presumably avoiding the beatings of the foreman. Later, he meets Nancy, a slave of another master. ...

Owl Moon53 reviews
Jane Yolen

Philomel, 1987

Worthy of an Award - a review of "Owl Moon"
I like Jane Yolen's work - the children do too (lol). But Owl Moon is probably the most poetic of her works that we have read. The word choice and imagery is wonderful; soft and soothing. You can hear the crunch of snow, and feel the biting cold. Like the others I give it 5 stars, and would add that it makes for a good bed-time book. Five Stars. Top notch Read-aloud. Artwork is nice, ...
