Cathedrals of Science: The Personalities and Rivalries That Made Modern Chemistry3 reviews
Patrick Coffey

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

great book for any engineer
A great read! I liked the way the author describes the different work cultures and habits of both Lewis and Langmuir...academia vs. industry. The author's plain talk about "the battles over priority of invention" and the scientific discovery methods gave me much insight into my own career in software engineering. One other thing that I _really_ liked was the feeling that I had just taken a ...

Great Cathedrals12 reviews
Bernhard Sch?tz

Harry N. Abrams, 2002

If you are looking for the definitive guide to European Cathedrals, this is THE book
This book has been around for at least 3 decades; I'm 43 and remember looking over an earlier edition with awe and reverence in the town library when I was a teenager. The current edition has some nice updates, including added coverage of the great eastern European cathedrals, such as St. Vitus in Prague. The photography is splendid, and gives a feel of the look and scale of each building, as ...

The Cathedral & the Bazaar: Musings on Linux and Open Source by an Accidental Revolutionary50 reviews
Eric S. Raymond

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2001

Simply a Great Book
I could not put this book down. In a nutshell: it's is about software and development models. Don't yawn just yet - this book definitely held onto my attention throughout. Eric Raymond has a great way of introducing the subject matter as he shares his first-hand experiences as a free software developer. If you ever tried or thought about writing software, especially free (as in speech) software, ...

Cathedral of the Sea14 reviews
Ildefonso Falcones

Dutton Adult, 2008

"Can these people really be your representatives?" - Arnau Estanyol
Ildefonso Falcones' novel, set in Catalonia, has been compared to Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth, both positively and negatively. Pillars of the Earth is one of my favorite books, but I have enjoyed Falcones also, even though its style is different. Follett's book is a consistent page-turner; Cathedral begins more slowly but as the plot and characters develop, becomes a real page-turner ...

Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature of Society17 reviews
David Sloan Wilson

University Of Chicago Press, 2003

An Exciting and Thougtht Provoking Look at Human Nature
This is an exciting book because of the explanatory power of the ideas expressed. Group selection as an evolutionary force was largely dismissed on the basis of William's work in the 1960s. Now Wilson not only revives it but suggests how our very human nature has been dependent upon it. The problem has been that evolution at the level of the individual rewards self concern and weeds out ...

Murder in the Cathedral12 reviews
T. S. Eliot

Harvest Books, 1964

Thomas Beckett as martyr philosopher; Shakespearean genius
The audiobook version of "Murder in the Cathedral" (with Robert Donat playing Thomas Beckett) is a surprising delight, especially for those who love rich language and philosophical musings. Centered around the age-old story of how Thomas Beckett, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered by knights for defying the king's authority, the play explores a variety of themes: church vs. state, the ...

The Cathedral Within: Transforming Your Life by Giving Something Back13 reviews
Bill Shore

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2001

Not just for non-profits
Bill Shore's enlightening book, "Transforming Your Life by Giving Something Back" is not just about non-profits. It provides insight into every part of human life. He spikes the book with advice about marriage, child care, and friendships. The book, in my opinion, has less to do with non-profits and more to do with living a great life. It is certainly a must read by anyone who cares about ...

Cathedral53 reviews
Nelson DeMille

Grand Central Publishing, 1990

That's some mess you left in the Cathedral.
Nelson DeMille consistantly takes all the right turns when it comes to ending his and this exciting thriller. It's as though we come to know the characters in a real sense. Oddly enough, Cathedral is very believable. Having read almost every book Mr. DeMille has written, I can only hope he continues to write these great novels. Cathedral is an all around hit.

Cathedral Window Qulting4 reviews
Lynne Edwards

David & Charles, 2008

Great Book, Wonderful use of fabrics
I loved the wonderful use of fabrics that were used in creating the quilts in the book. Makes me want to make one now. I haven't tried any of the patterns yet but I am going to as soon as I get some other projects finished. This book seems well written, many photos of how to make the blocks as well as finished projects for inspiration.

Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction (Sandpiper)19 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1981

Macaulay's books
This book lives up to my expectations of David Macaulay's books in that it's very well drawn, has an abundant amount of useful information and is presented in a clear, exciting manner!

The Gothic Cathedral: The Architecture of the Great Church 1130-15302 reviews
Christopher Wilson

Thames & Hudson, 2005

The Gothic Cathedral is comprehesive AND readable!
How I ended up being the first to review this book is beyond me. I would've guessed that many a learned architectural scholar would've long since sung the praises of this wonderful book. I, however, am just a layman with a lifelong passion for Gothic cathedral architecture, which started in the Washington National Cathedral and became educated, at least partiallly, in this book. I consider ...

Chartres Cathedral4 reviews
Malcolm Miller

Pitkin Guides, 1996

An armchair introduction to a gothic treasure
Malcolm Miller is the foremost English authority on the cathedral of Chartres. He divides his time between the town of Chartres, where he personally conducts tours, and the rest of the world where he lectures and makes films and videos of the subject. He opens his tours and lectures by commenting that the cathedral is like a library--and we don't just say, "We're going to go to the library ...

Green Cathedrals: The Ultimate Celebration of All Major League Ballparks5 reviews
Philip Lowry

Walker & Company, 2006

Green Cathedrals: a review.
When I first received the book 'Green Cathedrals' in the mail I was initially disappointed in that all the photographs are in black and white. However once I really examined the book I realized this book is truly unique in that it is the only book I am aware of that lists every ballfield ever used by a major league team or negro league team. This book required a ton of research. For example, if ...

The Fly in the Cathedral: How a Group of Cambridge Scientists Won the International Race to Split the Atom13 reviews
Brian Cathcart

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2005

Peering Into Atom
Thumbs up for Brian Cathcart. Well done. What a good find and thank you University of Chicago Bookstore! Though it would greatly help to grasp the significance of the events described in the book if the reader had a scientific background, it is a great read regardless. Even more remarkable is the fact that the author does not claim any formal technical training or background. It took me ...

The Wadsworth Casebook Series for Reading, Research and Writing: Cathedral (Wadsworth Casebook Series for ...37 reviews
Laurie G. Kirszner, Stephen R. Mandell

Wadsworth Publishing, 2003

A Small, Good Thing
If What We Talk About When We Talk About Love was a collection full of characters in the middle of losing it all, then Cathedral is a collection full of characters trying to get it all back, trying to salvage relationships of all types: marital ("Chef's House"), paternal ("The Compartment"), and edible ("Preservation"). Though, how hard the characters in the stories are trying is questionable, ...

Building the Book Cathedral2 reviews
David Macaulay

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1999

David Macaulay's Craft
When David Macaulay published "Cathedral" in 1973 it was an instant classic of children's literate. It has sold thousands of copies, never been out of print and has been translated into numerous languages. Macaulay followed the success of "Cathederal" with a number of highly successful books that followed the life cycles of buildings. Macaulay's pen and ink books have developed quite a ...

Universe of Stone: A Biography of Chartres Cathedral8 reviews
Philip Ball

Harper, 2008

Outstanding New Book on Chartres Cathedral
Why would someone write a biography of a BUILDING? Well, if you've ever been to Chartres Cathedral about 45 miles south-west of Paris, you'd know why. Chartres continues to provoke us with its emotive power, and its place in the history of Gothic architecture is firmly secured at "page 1" in our texts. That's why it was so exciting when we found out that there was a new treatment of Chartres ...

The Gothic Cathedral3 reviews
Otto Georg Von Simson

Princeton University Press, 1988

The contextual foundations of Gothic Architecture
As an art historian, museum curator, and traveler to France I found this book very useful. Most books on Gothic Architecture look at style as though it exists for its own sake. Simson places the beginnings of Gothic Architecture into the intellectual and historical context that gave this archetectual style its birth. The two sections that I most enjoyed were the theology of light that Suger ...

The Construction of Gothic Cathedrals: A Study of Medieval Vault Erection6 reviews
John Fitchen

University Of Chicago Press, 1997

How did they do it?
The builders of Gothic vaults left few clues (written or pictorial) about their actual construction methods. John Fitchen employs induction as well as the skills of a detective to figure out how the vaults were designed and built. Nevertheless, he fails the inquisitive reader at one critical point. Fitchen states that the stone ribs supporting the Gothic vaults conform to a curve called, in ...
