A Great Historical Piece
Variations exist within populations that compete for scarce resources needed for survival, and many of these variations not only affect the ability of the individual to compete, but also can be passed onto children. Those variations better suited for competition will be passed on at a higher rate than those that are less suited for competition due to higher rates of survival. In this way, nature ...

Not-so complete set of Charles Dickens
Have been looking for this set for a long time. It was published early in the 20th Century as a 30-volume set. That's what we ordered, but only received only 27 volumes.

a great addition to the series
Fleet Street picks up shortly after The September Society. While Lennox and Lady Jane are planning their wedding two things happen nearly concurrently. The first, which is what the book is titled, is a pair of near simultaneous murders on Fleet Street. Two journalists are murdered in their own homes. The two murders set the city alight and, as always amateur sleuth Charles Lennox itches to ...

Unforgettable, very endearing charcters
This is a charming totally delightful read, a perfect cozy mystery. Finch transports you right into middle of England's Victorian era and the life of the protagonist, Charles Lenox. And he does it all with good writing and excellent plotting. Lenox is so real, so human and appealing that you miss him when another character takes center stage. I also love the perfect way the characters interacted ...

A bit dull
These three stories may have been novel at the time Dickens wrote them. Today, they are but three ghost stories; nothing particularly exciting or thought provoking from our viewpoint today. To give a couple of examples; in the first story, a railroad signalman foresaw his death. In the last, a murdered man appeared to the jury foreman at the murderer's trial. This murdered man, now ghost, ...

A New Year's Eve Carol of Sorts...
Modern readers of Dicken's A Christmas Carol are often inoculated to what a shocking piece of literature it was in its day. Familiarity has softened its blow to the public at large. This is not so with The Chimes. The Chimes is the second of Dickens's "Christmas Books." Written in 1844 it came a year after A Christmas Carol and a year before The Cricket on the Hearth. Not nearly as widely read as ...
