Raincoast Sasquatch: The Bigfoot / Sasquatch Records of Southeast Alaska, Coastal British Columbia & ...10 reviews
J Robert Alley

Hancock House Publishing, 2003

Raises the Bar for Alaska and BC Reports!
I really worry this book will soon be out of print. It offers the best coverage of sightings for the remote coastlines of British Columbia and Alaska EVER! For those reviews that have mentioned that the book might be limited because of its "spatial" focus, I will say this is the book's strength. The bigfoot book genre will need to start moving in this focused direction to better serve ...

Golden Gate Gardening: The Complete Guide to Year-Round Food Gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area & ...10 reviews
Pam Peirce

Riverhouse Nursery, 1992

One of the best how-to books I have read. The definitive guide for Bay Area gardeners.
About me: I bought Golden Gate Gardening before starting my first backyard vegetable garden two years ago. Everything was new to me. Soil, weeds, water, sun. About the book: [fawning alert] Ms. Peirce has no agenda, other than to give clear, useful, concise information. Her introduction let me know she has a soul. Her information let me know she is an expert. And her information is useful. It ...

Nigel Calder's Cruising Handbook: A Compendium for Coastal and Offshore Sailors27 reviews
Nigel Calder

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 2001

Wish I Had This Before We Went Cruising, But . . .
If you're already out cruising, this book isn't going to provide a lot of useful information -- it's more about what to think about before buying a cruising boat and outfitting it for your purposes. I wish I'd read this before we bought our boat as it would have given us a better framework for a lot of the decisions we had to make.

Coastal Fishing in the Carolinas: From Surf, Pier and Jetty9 reviews
Robert Goldstein

John F. Blair Publisher, 1994

The best OBX fishing book. Period.
I'd have to say this is one of my favorite books on fishing and one of the most complete books on fishing a particular area that I've ever read...even right down to information on exactly where to fish for each species. This book is well written, easy to understand, and well suited to anyone trying to learn how to fish (or how to fish better) from surf, jetty, or pier. Highly recommended.

Brittle Stars & Mudbugs: An Uncommon Field Guide to Northwest Shorelines & Wetlands8 reviews
Patricia K. Lichen

Sasquatch Books, 2002

A delightful, personal introduction to the NW shore life
This delightful little book is an absolute pleasure to read. It fits nicely in the hand, the pages are easy to read, and the illustrations are gentle and lovingly drawn. The author tells you stories about these animals, plants and algae the way she would if you were walking with her along the beach and came across each specimin. It's not ordered by phylum or habitat, but apparently randomly, ...

Death of a Mermaid: A Callie McKinley Outer Banks Mystery9 reviews
Wendy Howell Mills

Coastal Carolina Press, 2002

Death of a Mermaid
I absolutely loved the book! It's even better than the first one. I couldn't put it down and didn't know who the bad guy was until the end. Wendy's writing is wonderful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'm ready to read her next one as soon as she writes it. Way to go Wendy!

The Curve of Time: The Classic Memoir of a Woman and Her Children Who Explored the Coastal Waters of the ...10 reviews
M. Wylie Blanchet

Seal Press, 2002

One womans courageous life
This story was expecially fun for me to read because this woman lived in a time and near a place of my own grandmother. She took hold of her life after the death of her husband and shared wonderful adventures with her children each summer in the waters and byways of the Canadian BC inland waterways. She did this in an era where her family said she should sell everything and "move home where it ...

The Coastal Living Cookbook: The Ultimate Recipe Collection for People Who Love the Coast13 reviews
Editors of Coastal Living Magazine

Oxmoor House, 2004

Great Book! Plenty of easy recipes.
I thought the book had plenty of recipes to chose from. It's a great book for picking something special to fix without a lot of fuss.

Camellia the Bald9 reviews
E. W. Zrudlo

Coastal Carolina Press, 2001

CAmellia the Bald
This is a wonderful fantasy that stars a girl which is awfully nice for a change. It is filled with adventure and interesting sensitive relationships - one between Camellia and her father- and others with the many characters/companions on her journey. It is also nice to see that she doesn't have the fantasy perfect family and still feels loved and supported by others. It's nice to see the family ...

Options for North Carolina coastal highways vulnerable to long term erosion23 reviews
John R Stone

North Carolina State University, Center for Transportation Engineering Studies, 1991

Truly, one of the giants
When you think of the best poets ever, T.S. Eliot is one of those that comes to mind. His work is well crafted, intelligent, beautifully written, and has a flow to it that few poets can match. And this is a fine collection for the Eliot lover or for the reader unfamiliar with Eliot. It's divided into several sections. The first section is his Prufrock section, poems from 1917, which contains ...

Murder in a Coastal Town and other stories8 reviews
Eric Lee

Paragon Publishing, 2009

Fantastic Read!
The nine short stories contained in Murder in a Coastal Town are fast-paced and immensely enjoyable to read. Mr. Lee has a knack for developing his stories using realistic dialog and always ends his stories with an unexpected twist. While all six stories are definitely worth reading, my favorite was "Murder at Buckley Liquors". The story combines elements of a court room drama and a murder ...

Tideland Treasure6 reviews
Todd Ballantine

University of South Carolina Press, 1991

An absolute must-have
I used this book for two summers when I lived on Hilton Head. My job was to drive people around on small boats and teach them about the natural wonders of barrier islands. Since I was a boat captain, not a naturalist, this book saved my bacon many times over. Anytime anyone asked me a question, I'd just grab the book and look it up, and I'd usually give it to them so they could look at the ...

O Is For Oystercatcher: A Book of Seaside ABCs6 reviews
Barbara Patrizzi

Down The Shore Publishing, 2004

Excellent book for any age.
"O is for Oystercatcher" is a phenomenal book for people of all ages. The artwork is colorful and unique. The pictures hold the attention of the children in my daycare while teaching them things about the seashore they did not know. And on top of it all, it's helping our pre-schoolers to learn their alphabet. Aside from the children, the adults have learned a lot about the seashore also. ...

Adventure Guide to the Inside Passage & Coastal Alaska (Adventure Guide to the Inside Passage & Coastal ...5 reviews
Lynn Readicker-Henderson, Ed Readicker-Henderson

Hunter Publishing, 1999

A must for Southeast travelers
Out of all the travel books I purchased for my Alaska trip this one proved to be the most entertaining and useful. When I recieved this book I expected just another guide book but I couldn't stop reading - the anecdotes and suggestions were as compelling as a good novel. It felt like a nice, long letter from a friend who wanted to be sure I had a great trip. While traveling I found most of ...

Coastal Fish Identification: California to Alaska6 reviews
Paul Humann

New World Pubns Inc, 1996

Great Resource for Divers
As an avid diver in the Puget Sound, I have found this book to be very useful. It features great photos to help me identify the fishes that I encounter while underwater. The format is easy to use because it is geared toward the underwater naturalist. I recommend it to all my diver friends.

Cape Fear Murders: A Carroll Davenport Mystery (Carroll Davenport Mysteries)7 reviews
Wanda Canada

Coastal Carolina Press, 2003

Nice Murder Mystery!
I really enjoyed the adventures of Caroll Davenport and the turns and twists of "who done it". Nicely written and great book to read on vacation or a wintery day. I picked up Wanda Canada's first book in the series, Island Murders, in a book store while on vacation in South Carolina and it made me want to read more about the characters adventures. I am waiting for the third in the series.

Salt Marshes: A Natural and Unnatural History6 reviews
Judith S. Weis, Carol A. Butler

Rutgers University Press, 2009

Excellent Overview of Tidal Wetlands
Four decades ago, John and Mildred Teal published their seminal study of tidal wetlands, Life and Death of the Salt Marsh (1969). They noted: "Marshes are generally considered useless land that must be made useful as quickly as possible. 'Useful,' of course, means destruction of the marsh in most cases and conversion of the area to ground on which people can stand, and water on which they can ...

Underwater to Get Out of the Rain: A Love Affair With the Sea6 reviews
Trevor Norton

Da Capo Press, 2006

A joyous celebration as well as a scientific investigation and a fine leisure read
As a young boy author Trevor Norton was fascinated by water: a fascination which would continue into adulthood, and which serves as the foundation of experience of UNDERWATER TO GET OUT OF THE RAIN, a blend of natural history and memoir. Norton's fascination would lead him to travel oceans of the world, to study the science and history of oceans, and to probe both the surface of the ocean and the ...

Brown Water, Black Berets: Coastal and Riverine Warfare in Vietnam8 reviews
Thomas J. Cutler

Naval Inst Pr, 1988

Fine military history...
An excellent and highly informative narrative of the nearly unknown world of the United States Navy's small craft fleet in Vietnam. A fine reminder to the sailors of today that individual heroism in a war fought with the machine gun and not missles is part of the recent naval tradition. If anyone can say they followed the path of John Paul Jones and went into harm's way, these sailors can, and ...

Turn South at the Next Magnolia6 reviews
Nan Graham

Coastal Carolina Press, 2000

The right book for anytime. Read with joy and delight!
What a treat to be able to pick up a book and read with a laugh in your heart. It is a book that can be read under the hairdryer, while waiting in the doctor's office, waiting for your tennis lesson, before you fall asleep and all the while wishing someone was reading it with you so you could laugh and smile together. The stories are short and if you are from the South characters, places, traits, ...
