As close as you can get to being there
This is an excellent, no b.s. account by Dick Couch, himself a SEAL and fmr CIA Operative who writes without any ego driven agenda. He has been given excellent access by the Army. This clearly isn't written from a warm, dry desk. He goes into the cold, heat, and rain to get it right. Starting before training, Couch follows (runs alongside) the Special Forces "training process", which is more ...

One of the best David Weber yet!
I am a long time David Weber fan and this is perhaps the novel that I enjoyed the most. I love the characters. They all, both the good and the bad seem very real. One of the most interesting things is how some of the "bad" characters are transformed into "good". And those on the wrong side of the conflict are not really evil. There is plenty of action but the book is not just one big battle ...

I'll keep this short. This is the first "couldn't put it down" book I've read in a long time.

It's the End of the World As We Know, and It's Grim
This is a story of multiple disasters happening at once, two natural and one man-made, and how people coped. It's especially the story of one Army captain given impossible jobs, and how he coped. It is, by turns, grim, infuriating, exciting, and hilariously funny. The first natural disaster is an outbreak of killer flu, like the great influenza epidemic at the end of World War I. It ...

Can't put it down
I'm not one for writing reviews, so I'll just say I really like this series. Jack Campbell has been able to describe enough detail that I can see the scenes playing out in my mind. I can't wait for the last 2 books to come out.

Rip Van Winkle in Space - Part 2
This is the second book in the Lost Fleet series and it does not disappoint. The space battles are presented in crisp clean prose, with believable attention to physics. The hero, John "Black Jack" Geary evolves and changes under pressure and even, with due discretion, acquires a girlfriend. There's stronger speculation about the existence of aliens as a driving force for the 100 year old war. ...

Days of Infamy
An interesting twist inspired by a real piece of history, Days of Infamy is a brilliant story that is hard to put down once you start. I have high standards in my reading recommendations, and this is a book that is worthy of my precious time. It will stir your imagination and your emotions, and will give you a keen appreciation of why there is a US Navy, and why there will always be a USS ...

Must read for the military or police.
This book, as many have stated, is great for understanding the psychology of someone returning from the battlefield. But for those who have yet to enter the battlefield, or will shortly find themselves returning, I suggest they read On Combat. That book deals much more with the subject of the physiology and psychology of the act of combat itself and how to prepare for it, rather than how to ...

The Steel Wave
Jeff Shaara is the best author I have read on the World Wars l and ll. They are historically accurate and the way he writes one learns history without having to read a dull history book. I did not want to put the book down. He writes in a way that you get completely immersed in the situations and action. I highly recommend this book as well as his others.

Reluctant Participant
Being much more familiar with Tim O'Brien's fiction, one may not know what to expect in his memoir about his tour of duty in Vietnam. Written in the same style with a wry sense of humor, O'Brien challenges the war in a way few have. Courage and morality are continuing themes that O'Brien explores through his actions as well as literary quotes. It is very clear that O'Brien was uncomfortable ...

Captian's Fury is an excellent continuation of the very good series of books. A difficult book to put down once you start with enough twists to keep you guessing to the end yet not lose you along the way. Already anxious to get the next one.

Best Shooting Book for the Price
We just finished reviewing 10 recent tactical shooting books (2000 to 2008) for an upcoming magazine article, and Lawrence's Tactical Pistol Shooting is light years ahead of all the others, regardless of price. If you spend $5,000 and go to Gunsite (we teach blade combat as one of the Yavapai modules), you will walk away with almost the same knowledge as buying Lawrence's book for under 20 ...

Very Accurately Written coming from a HOG and OIF veteran.
I served in 3rd Battalion 7th Marines Scout Sniper Plt. during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2-3 and knew many of the Scout Snipers included in the stories of this book. I could not put the book down, it was very accurately written, and portrays exactly what it takes to become and operate as a Scout Sniper in combat. It makes me even more proud to be a HOG and part of the very small community. I'd ...

Don't be put off by the packaging
I ordered this book while on an Amazon shopping spree. When it arrived I stood there going "What was I thinking?". Navy SEALS, macho man on the cover, mean stare and a title that reads "Unleash the warrior.." Anyway, I've made some stupid purchases in the past, so at least it wasn't as if this was the first one. A few days later I got the flu and had to stay in bed for a few days, so I started ...

Great student hand book
This is a great supplement to any student that is taking Krav Maga. Its impossible to get "it" all in class and having something to use as a manual at home is an asset to your training. Most instructors I have talked to also have this book and it covers a lot of what is in the instructors manual. its not all the trade secrets mind you but trimmed down and explained in a way that is perfect ...

Terrorism After the Victory in Europe
The Man With the Iron Heart (2008) is a standalone alternate history novel set after the end of the war in Europe. In May, 1942, two Czechs attempted to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich on his way to the Castle of Prague. In the real world, they were successful. But not so in this tale. In February, 1943, the Reich was mourning the defeat at Stalingrad. Heydrich saw the possibility of losing ...

This book is a prime example of good publishing. No hype, no gross fabrications, no commercial over-bounds. Devoured in two days
I literally devoured this book over a weekend. I thought the premise was unique enough to grab my attention and the characters really popped off the pages. That in particular is the reason I read Weber. Being a stand-alone, it's not quite as daunting to pick up "Reef" as it is one of the Honor Harrington or War God books and it is still a good example of Webers writing.
