Comfortable with Uncertainty: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion (Shambhala Library)36 reviews
Pema Chodron

Shambhala, 2008

An excellent meditation tool
I enjoy this book. Each entry is short (two pages) and poignant. I read one or two each morning before I meditate. While I don't use this as a focus of my mediation, I find that it helps me get into the appropriate frame of mind. I also feel I am being gently supported in my practice when I read Ms Chodron's brief entries.

Field of Compassion: How the New Cosmology Is Transforming Spiritual Life6 reviews
Judy Cannato

Sorin Books, 2010

From Small Mind to Great Heart
"This book is for mature readers only." These are the opening words of this remarkable book. And it is true. It is for those who know in their bones that our historical moment is one of both great danger and great opportunity, who realize that the future of life itself, the quality of human life in particular is being decided by us, right now. Judy Cannato invites us to enter deeply and ...

Anger71 reviews

Riverhead, 2001

Every one should read
This book is wonderful! I enjoy many of Thich's writings but this book specifically profoundfully and peacefully addresses ways to combat what we are experiencing at this time, and at many levels through out the world. Both my partner and I have found deep changes happening for both of us simply by reading this book.

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (Oprah's Book Club, Selection 61)1517 reviews
Eckhart Tolle

Penguin, 2008

Genius with simplicity.
This book I have not yet finished, but I can say so far that it can appeal to every mind, and is so deep in thought. Every page is dense with useful psychological and spiritual material, and has a primary focus on the workings of the "ego," pointing out how our "ego" makes us into something we are not and how it has the power to decieve us. This is one of my favorites and I stress the books ...

Calming Your Anxious Mind: How Mindfulness & Compassion Can Free You from Anxiety, Fear, & Panic17 reviews

New Harbinger Publications, 2007

Applied meditation
This book was quite helpful in grasping the usefulness of meditation. I have tried relaxation techniques before, but this book revealed how useful it really is. I originally read the book because the author was being interviewed by The Graedons on THE PEOPLES PHARMACY radio show. I got a copy from the library and liked it so much I actually purchased my own copy from Amazon. Initially the ...

Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion30 reviews
Gregory Boyle

Free Press, 2010

And so he sings this song of love...
In this book about one of the poorest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, author and Jesuit priest Gregory "G-Dog" Boyle gets at the truth of human experience everywhere. Boyle arrived at Dolores Mission Church on the east side of Los Angeles in 1984 and became pastor in 1986. He buried his first young victim of gang violence in 1988 and in the years since has buried an additional 167 young ...

The Fearless Heart: The Practice of Living with Courage and Compassion
Pema Chodron

Shambhala Audio, 2010

Fear and guilt are two of the greatest challenges we face on the spiritual path?but there is a way to transform these painful feelings into courageous self-acceptance. Here Pema Chödrön presents the five aphorisms for developing fearlessness that were given to Machig Lapdronma, one of Tibetan Buddhism's greatest female teachers. Pema comments on these aphorisms, holds question-and-answer sessions, and leads guided meditations to help us: ...

The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion: Freeing Yourself from Destructive Thoughts and Emotions14 reviews

The Guilford Press, 2009

Awesome. No other word for it.
This book has brought me so many answers as to how to cope with day to day living, they're beyond counting. When I get to the end, I start over and begin again. I'm reading it for the third time and the pages are wrinkly from all the highlighting. :-) You don't have to be religious to benefit, and you can also benefit if you ARE religious - because it's not about religion, it's about living ...

If the Buddha Dated: A Handbook for Finding Love on a Spiritual Path74 reviews

Penguin, 1999

Not just about dating.
I happened upon this book at a yard sale and LOVED it! I then purchased two for friends of mine. It is much more than a "dating book". It is about finding yourself and learning to love yourself first. It changed my focus from finding that "perfect man" to learning to believe in myself and the process of living fully.

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2009

Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death8 reviews
Joan Halifax

Shambhala, 2009

Brilliant book
I have scanned the market of books about caretakers and the dying process, and to me this is the finest book available on the subject. It is cut-to-the-bone view of dying with many personal case stories. The book is in my view not so well-structured. It is divided in sections, but these overlap, and it seems more like a long association about dying, care-taking and the death process. ...

Compassion, Justice and the Christian Life: Rethinking Ministry to the Poor11 reviews

Regal Books, 2007

Candid, thoughful and provocative critique of misguided compassion
All charity is good, right? My church is charitable in our approach...isn't that enough? Bob Lupton demonstrates, from personal experience and past failures, that good intentions are no longer enough. Actually, as he shares, truly helping people is very challenging. However, unless we use our minds, in addition to our hearts, we might actually perpetuate the problems we are trying to solve ...

Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate10 reviews

Intervarsity Press, 2009

Balance of Love and Law on Immigration
Friendship is the face that Welcoming the Stranger gives to the situation of both legal and illegal immigrants. The book looks at immigration and offers constructive suggestions for response by the Christian faith community. Matthew Soerens and Jenny Hwang craft a viewpoint based on rational consideration of immigration and a biblically informed direction for the church and Christ followers. ...

Wide Awake: Buddhism for the New Generation8 reviews

Perigee, 2003

This book worked miracles for our 15 years old teenager
Our son was in very hard times, struggling to come to terms with the low values (if values) of modern society, modern music and his own background and values. With 14 he went into extrem aggression and anger. He sought refuge in hard rap, which on one side helped to work anger off, but fueled it from another side. Since he started to read (and practice) this book, he changed tremendously. I ...

Compassion: A Reflection on the Christian Life16 reviews
Henri Nouwen, Donald P. Mcneill, ...

Image, 2005

Insightful and Concise!
I'm having difficulty trying to type what I would like for someone to know about this book. I read the reviews of books before I purchase them too and know they have some influence. What if I just say that your dollar and time investment are low and your yield is gigantic? Reading this has brought me to a deeper understanding of God's nature and has brought me back to the Bible as a source of ...

Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness31 reviews
Sharon Salzberg, Jon Kabat-Zinn

Shambhala, 2008

A Staple
This has become a staple of my therapy practice. Lovingkindness (metta) meditation is a reliable resource for those interested in Buddhism and for those who know nothing of it. It speaks elegantly about how we regard ourselves, how we regard others, and the inseparability of the two. It reassures us that intentionally working toward loving ourselves is not "selfish" because is opens the ...

If the Buddha Married: Creating Enduring Relationships on a Spiritual Path13 reviews

Penguin, 2001

Couple's Therapy in a Book
When my wife and I get stressed out in our relationship, we sit down and one of us reads about a page out loud from "If the Buddha Married", then we talk about it, and about our own communication problems. This book reduces our defensiveness, and opens the door for us to level with each other about our own communication glitches, and makes it easier to let each other know what is bothering ...

An Open Heart: Practicing Compassion in Everyday Life35 reviews

Back Bay Books, 2008

A master of compassionate mindfulness practice
An open heart and an open mind are characteristics of the Buddhist way of mindfulness. This opens us to the unconditioned spaciousness that is pure buddha consciousness. When we cultivate this within then we create the right conditions for peace and happiness without. This is the central teaching of this great man. If you would like to read more about the power of mindfulness, I also recommend ...

Fields of the Fatherless: Discover the Joy of Compassionate Living6 reviews

David C. Cook, 2008

Orphan's deserve a Christian's attention
This was a very good read. I purchased this book as a tool to make the decision whether or not to adopt a child from overseas. This author makes it very clear and cites many Biblical references to the importance of Christians to look after widows and orphans. This is a HUGE problem in the world and every Christian should help in some capacity, be it adopting, which I have done twice and more ...
