The Art and Science of Digital Compositing25 reviews

Morgan Kaufmann, 1999

A must
Even if I'm not working in vfx, so I haven't a great experience, I think this book should be in every comps shelf: very simple, well written, it deals with the math under every (even the simplest) operation you can do in your compositing package (it's quite software-indipendent). It explains several wonderful tricks too. Globally, very useful in my opinion.

Digital Compositing for Film and Video with CDROM (Focal Press Visual Effects and Animation)5 reviews
Steve Wright

Focal Press, 2001

One of the best compositing books out there...
If you consider yourself an upper intermediate level user or less, I'd recommend this book. Among many other things that it does quite well, it explains what procedural keyers like Primatte are doing and shows you how to accomplish the same kinds of processes manually. You will know what each of the many keyers in After Effects (and other compositing apps) are doing and the logic behind each. You ...

Digital Retouching and Compositing: Photographers' Guide (Power!)2 reviews
David D. Busch

Course Technology PTR, 2003

Best Retouching Book on the Market!
This is simply the best book on digital retouching that I've seen! Some of the other books look slick, but when you get down to it, all they provide are a series of quick tips on how to fix particular problems. This book has those tips, too, but the author goes much deeper into explaining why these techniques are necessary, and exactly how they work. Instead of handing me a fish, Busch has ...

A must have for your VFX library
If you're new to the effect industry or a seasoned pro this is still the bible for understanding what is happening under the hood of a compositing software. This is not software specific, but be it 'Shake' or 'an other' this will help you truly understand the what, when and why. This book together with - Ron Brinkman's 'The Art and Science of Digital Compositing' - also available at Amazon, ...

Colin Smith

Charles River Media, 2005

Photoshop CS2
I was really surprised this was such an excellent book. Usually I just read the chapters I am interested in , but I read this whole book--it was just so instructional and one that I will keep close to the computer for reference book.

Photoshop Masking & Compositing (VOICES)73 reviews
Katrin Eismann

New Riders Press, 2004

Katrin Eismann is the best!
The cost of any book by Katrin Eismann is returned to the reader in value many, many times over. This book is everything the photoshop user needs to know about the sometimes daunting, but now made easy by Katrin, masking and compositing images. Now you can make those tough cut-outs of thin strands of hair against tough backgrounds that you used to run away from before. Katrin is one of the ...

Combining Images with Photoshop Elements: Selecting, Layering, Masking, and Compositing9 reviews
Ted LoCascio

Sybex, 2006

educator admires a text book about a difficult concept
As a retired pricipal, I love Ted LoCascio's book. It seems to me, that he studied how to write a textbook for beginners, which I mostly am, and experienced amateurs, which I somewhat am. i was floundering about how to use brushes well and how to layer well. The other books are not written in a logical, easily understood way that newbies can understand and practice. This book is the ...

Filming the Fantastic: A Guide to Visual Effects Cinematography8 reviews
Mark Sawicki

Focal Press, 2007

A book on effects for everyone.
Mark Sawicki's book, is a wonderful resource for those interested or involved with the history and creation of visual effects for film and TV. This book would be a great addition to a visual art students library - teachers will also find the practical exercises excellent, while film industry professionals will find the advice and commonsense approach to making visual effects invaluable. I should ...

Inspired 3D Lighting & Compositing (Inspired 3D)7 reviews
David Parrish

Course Technology PTR, 2002

An excellent book for us newbies.
I've now read through a small pile of CG books and I found that my self-studies would not have been complete without Parrish's excellent book. I wish I discovered it earlier when I first started struggling with 3D modeling and rendering software. I would recommend this as the first book a beginner in computer graphics should read; but also worth reading if you are a bit farther down the road.

Adobe Master Class: Photoshop Compositing with John Lund (Adobe Master Class)5 reviews
John Lund, Pamela Pfiffner

Adobe Press, 2003

Great book! Must have for any level Photoshop user.
John Lund invites you into his studio, gives you a cup of coffee and lets you look over his shoulder while he works, all the while explaining what he's doing in a way that makes it easy to understand. And what he does is amazing! This book is inspirational, not very heady (as in 'you could never in your wildest dreams ever do this') and practical (as in 'you can do this') with easy-to-follow, ...

Photo-Based 3d Graphics in C++: Compositing, Warping, Morphing and Other Digital Special Effects/Book and Disk1 review
Tim Wittenburg

John Wiley & Sons, 1995

Dated and Confused
As a reference for programming image compositing tools, this book doesn't go deep enough, doesn't use industry-standard terminology, and is crammed with dated information. I should have first recognized that there would be a problem when I started reading about the time the author spent working with the "Windows 95 beta 3". Sure enough, the book was published in 1995, and contains quite a bit ...

Adobe InDesign CS2 One-on-One (One-On-One)10 reviews
Deke McClelland

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006

Beginner to Expert with one book
We're using this book in my Page Layout class at College and it's one of the best "text books" I've ever used. Deke provides lots of extras on the CD to help visualize the steps and end results quickly. He also gives many details as you work through the lessons to get you to an expert level as quickly as possible. I'll look for the One-on-One books for future software training and especially ...

Shake 4.1 Essential Training1 review
Steve Wright

lynda.com, Inc, 2007

DRM prevents disc from playing on my mac...
When you have a video training program that you are selling for nearly $100, naturally you do not want it copied and distributed for free over the internet. So you do some very clever engineering, using hidden files and proprietary software and DRM, so that people can't copy your product. Problem is, that clever technological feat means that your DVD-ROM might not actually play at all, say, if ...

Bluescreen Compositing (DV Expert Series) (DV Expert Series) (Dv Expert Series)1 review
John Jackman

CMP Books, 2007

very understandable
Jackman takes us thru the steps in doing professional bluescreen usage for movies. Easy explanations, with accompanying descriptions of the typical equipment needed. It does not seem hard at all. Numerous tips are given, about how to arrange lighting, what the people being filmed should wear, etc. In general, given a choice of furniture and ambient lighting, the colours of clothing need to be ...

Great manual for beginners
The manual is very well organized and clearly the right choice for any person willing to learn, even if knowing absolutely nothing about this great software.
