The Music of Conlon Nancarrow (Music in the Twentieth Century)
1 review

Essential for anyone serious about new musical resources
Conlon Nancarrow was a creative genious. Although quite possibly the most rhythmically complex and original music ever composed in its time, his music sounds pleasant enough to appeal to those who have no (vested) interest in the science of music. In addition to introducing the man behind the music, this book provides a thorough and accurate analysis of the numerous rhythmic/melodic devices ...

Historically important snapshot of baseball
Were Charles Conlon still alive, I would track him down and kiss his feet for capturing in such vivid detail the historic giants of baseball. The book features remarkable photos of the greatest baseball players of most of the first half of this century. Suitable for framing, the photos typically depict individual players and small groups, often in game action. The well preserved photographs ...

The author knows cops, he knows New York, and he knows how to write.
While I agree that this book is at times a bit long winded with perhaps too many anecdotes where a few will do, I'll stake my reputation as a New Yorker that Eddie Conlon gets his subject 'right.' This is the real deal. Although Law & Order is entertaining, it's basically fantasy. Eddie Conlon captures the personalities of his characters, the local political and personal politics of the inner ...

A different view of the world
As a traveler myself, I highly recommended this book to anyone who has ever wondered what it is really like to travel off the tourist track in exotic lands. Dorothy S. Conlon's sharp observation and gentle humor will transport you into the everyday lives of people and cultures far removed from the western paradigm. But this is not just a book about travelling, it is also a charming between the ...

Incredible read.
This book was incredible. It's difficult to believe the such injustices happen. Basically, this book is about a troubled 'youth' who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and was sentenced to jail along with other members of his family. When the book is over, you feel a sense of relief, yet you can't help but feel anger towards the criminal justice system.

Good, but not as good as th first two books
This is the final book in the famine trilogy. This book ties up all the stories in the previous books. The book details what happens to Eily, Peggy and Micheal. I found the chapters on Peggy the most interesting, and I was sorry that there was only a few chapters about her. The chapters about Eily and Micheal show the difficulties that many Irish tenants were faced with in the years after the ...

well written homage as the light shines on Poe evermore
The underlying theme of this superb collection is modern authors completing a fragment written by Edgar Allen Poe sort of like Natalie Cole singing Unforgettable with her father Nat King Cole. In the Introduction Christopher Conlon explains that just before his death, Poe, though depressed and an alcoholic, was still writing, but never finished his last work. That fragment (included in the ...
