Cooking for a Crowd: Menus, Recipes and Strategies for Entertaining 10 to 508 reviews
Susan Wyler

Rodale Books, 2005

GREAT COOKING IDEAS FOR PARTIES
This is a very practical book, fool of wonderful recipes. Very well written, simple to follow. I've only had a chance to try a couple so far, but with great success. Black and Orange Halloween Party for 24 was simple enough to do, and an instant hit. The Chocolate Chili with Beef, Pork, and Black Beans was to die for. I can't wait to try other dishes from this book. Highly recommend this cookbook.

Cooking Basics for Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking))19 reviews
Alison Yates, Bryan Miller

For Dummies, 2004

Great basic reference book
This book is exactly what it claims to be, a basic reference book for an inexperienced cook. It begins with the basics of what all those mysterious things in the kitchen are and then proceeds to explain how to use them safely. Various food items are then discussed, with an emphasis on selection and storage. Cooking techniques are introduced moving from the very basic to more advanced. As each ...

Cooking for Comfort : More Than 100 Wonderful Recipes That Are as Satisfying to Cook as They Are to Eat4 reviews
Marian Burros

Simon & Schuster, 2003

#1 cookbook in my collection
Cooking for Comfort by Marian Burros is one of the most well thought out, incredibly written cookbooks I have ever read, cooked from or salivated over! Typically the word "Comfort Food" strikes up the notion of large amounts of fat, not in this cookbook. While you can find hints of luxurious fattening recipes scattered throughout her cookbook-- it is for all the right reasons. These recipes ...

Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone185 reviews
Deborah Madison

Broadway, 2007

Delicous and nutritious!
This book is always out...everything I've made has been delicious and it has so many different recipes for non-meat foods. As a non-veg, I generally substitute chicken stock for vegetable stock and use the tofu marinades for chicken or fish. This book is a great inspiration for diversifying our meals. I recommend it to everyone I know!

Gluten-Free Cooking For Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking))1 review
Danna Korn, Connie Sarros

For Dummies, 2008

Don't be fooled by title - much more than just cooking tips
I was pleasantly surprised that the book goes far beyond gluten-free cooking tips and recipes. I have read Korn's other 3 books, and all have been tremendously helpful, and even inspiring. The gluten-free diet can be a shocker (give up your beer, your bread, your tasty baked treats, etc.), but the author somehow makes it easy to understand the nuances of this tricky diet. You feel like you are ...

Chinese Cooking for Dummies10 reviews
Martin Yan

For Dummies, 2000

Great for first-timers, only wish there were more pictures
Four main things to comment on: 1) You definitely feel Martin Yan's personality in these pages. Great broad yet brief background on regional influences on Chinese cooking. 2) Equally good broad yet brief explanation of basic ingredients and also the prep and cooking techniques. 3) Recipes are pretty easy and you are welcome to buy most of the basic sauces rather than make them from scratch. 4) ...

Healthy Cooking for Two (or Just You): Low-Fat Recipes with Half the Fuss and Double the Taste64 reviews
Frances Price

Rodale Books, 1997

Best cookbook I own!
I bought this cookbook several years ago based on someone's recommendation, and consider it one of my best purchases ever. The recipes are simple to prepare, delicious and healthy. I have not been disappointed in a single recipe. I was a little turned off at first because there were no photos of the prepared foods, but after months and months of use, I can honestly say that I use this cookbook ...

Cooking On A Stick (Acitvities for Kids)10 reviews
Linda White

Gibbs Smith, Publisher, 2000

fun book with neat ideas
I got this book at the library, but then came now online to purchase it. The ideas presented were fun and easy. I hadn't used tin foil on the campfire before, and the author gave some good ideas for that as well as items to be cooked on a stick. For example, I loved the idea about melting chocolate and bananas in the banana peel wrapped in tin foil. One reviewer commented about the use of ...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cooking--for Guys (Complete Idiot's Guide to)5 reviews
Tod Dimmick

Alpha, 2004

Kitchen Secrets for Guys
I have two recipes for making waffles, my own and Tod Dimmick's recipe. Guess which my husband prefers? Yes, he says he likes the texture of the waffles in this cookbook. I like my waffles very crispy and I found that you can make the waffles that way by cooking them a bit longer or by putting them in the toaster. Tod Dimmick used to avoid the kitchen, but he is currently turning out ...

Cooking for Two: 120 Recipes for Every Day and Those Special Nights22 reviews
Bruce Weinstein, Mark Scarbrough

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2004

Great addition to my cookbook library!
I bought this book for me and my boyfriend to use... and we do so religously. We make a recipe from this book about once per week and are always delighted with the results. The recipes are easy to follow and if ingredients are difficult to find in your local grocery, substitute ingredient suggestions are made. We now have a few favorites we have added to our repertoire! I also purchased a copy ...

Going Solo in the Kitchen24 reviews
Jane Doerfer

Knopf, 1998

Thank you!!
All of the positive reviews are exactly right. This cookbook is fantastic: easy recipes, easy to find ingredients, food that tastes good, and excellent suggestions for how to put together a meal, use leftovers, store food, reduce waste. I love it and just wanted to thank Jane Doerfer for her ideas. I now look forward to cooking for myself and trying out new ideas.

Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners5 reviews
Amadea Morningstar

Lotus Press, 1995

An excellent resource
This is a super book for people interested in Ayurveda who think this health system can be followed using only Indian foods. Morningstar prooves this myth wrong. Her recipes are familiar and are coupled with a wealth of interesting and useful information. I'm glad I have this book on my shelf.

Panicked? GET THIS BOOK!
With my husband's diagnosis of renal failure, dialysis, and future transplant also came the nastiest diet restrictions imaginable. I was losing my mind trying to keep track of sodium, phosphorous, potassium, carbs, and protein while cooking for him - until I got this book. I've been carryiing it around with me constantly since I got it a few weeks ago. It does a much better job of explaining the ...

Once-a-Month Cooking, Revised and Expanded: A Proven System for Spending Less Time in the Kitchen and ...18 reviews
Mary-Beth Lagerborg, Mimi Wilson

St. Martin's Griffin, 2007

LOVE IT
The first plan I tried was one month plan D. I was concerned about portion sizes and flavor of the recipes. We are alomost finished with the first month's food. Everything was delicious, you never know with recipes, there were some dishes that I made notes to (add more chicken, needs more gravy) but other than that, they were all great dishes. We have a family of 6 and some of the meals are ...

Cooking School Secrets For Real-World Cooks20 reviews
Linda Carucci

Chronicle Books, 2005

A great resource for cooks wanting to take their "game" to the next level
Permit me a brief digression that will later bear on the review. I once attended a massage therapy school in a city with three competing schools, and I was continually amazed at how limited the competing graduates from the other schools were in basic anatomy, assessment, and palpation skills compared to what I learned. On the other hand, those graduates were way ahead in actual "salon/day spa" ...
