Love advertising as art? Okay, how about as humor?
For close to 20 years, ending in the late 1980s, Ray Welch dominated New England advertising awards. He was the Woody Allen of the industry, writing self-deprecating (but hilarious and strategically spot-on) ads, and later becoming one of the area's most effective voice-over announcers. He was also one of the most well-liked personalities in the community -- I should know, I was there -- and a ...

A good reference book for advertising writers
This is not a how-to book to read from cover to cover. It is a reference book for writing slogans, headlines, or news releases. It contains lists of idioms, cliches, metaphors, similes, euphemisms, rhyming words, famous quotations, and notable events in world history. It also includes lists of different types of slogans and the basics of writing brochures, ads, and news releases. If you ...

Great explanation of what goes into creating great ads.
I loved this book. It was one of the first books about the creative side of advertsing that clearly explained what great advertising is, why it's worth creating, and how one goes about actually doing it. It inpired me to get in the business and reach for killer ideas. (I'm now a happily and gainfully employed creative director/copywriter.) - a Reade

A waste of time and money
This book is beyond basic; it doesn't even work as a 'For Dummies' title. There was no useful information about setting up a business or finding clients. Plus, the spelling and grammar were inconsistent throughout -- ironic for a book on becoming a freelance writer, proofreader, copyeditor, etc. I returned this book and look forward to getting my money back!

A Lost Classic on Copywriting and Ad Agency Life
This book has come to be known as the "curmudgeonly copywriting classic," and, unfortunately, has been forgotten in many copywriting circles. Author John Matthews was one of the top copywriters at Leo Burnett in the sixties. While far less known than his contemporary, David Oglivy, he offers some great insights into the craft of copywriting, as well as taking a few shots at Oglivy along the ...

Good practical advice.
I bought this book and found it to be practical and helpful. There is not a lot of talk about setting up an office and what kind of computer to buy. Instead, the book focuses on on subject and one subject only: how to prospect for customers. While I admit the methods outlined in this short booklet aren't easy, they have worked for me. I recommend it highly. But if you're looking for fluff ...
