Carnival of fury: Robert Charles and the New Orleans race riot of 19004 reviews
William Ivy Hair

Missouri Department of Corrections, 2003

a fantasic examination of one slice of race history
William Ivy Hair in this fast-paced, readable book accomplishes more in a couple of hundred pages than many of our more ponderous historians have aimed to achieve in far-bulkier works. If future historians learn to write and marshall their facts as well as Hair does here, the tales of our past will remain vivid and important to young readers of the future.

The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction5 reviews
Steve Hullfish

Focal Press, 2008

Not just "How To" but "Why Do"
I originally wrote this review for my blog and decided to post it here since I think it'll help potential buyers decide if this book is for them. Enjoy... First question: Is The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction worth reading? Answer: Yes! Absolutely. Second question: Is it targeted at newbies or advanced users? Yes. To both. The first two thirds of the book "Primary ...

Beating muscle injuries for horses: [25 common muscular problems, their cause, correction, prevention]4 reviews
Jack Meagher

Hamilton Horse Associates, 1985

Great book - very informative
I read this book over 15 years ago. I wanted to see if I could get another copy as mine was stolen (it was so good). Helped me a lot with horses. As I heard that Jack Meagher died last week, I thought I would look for it. I think I only paid $15 for my paperback copy years ago and would not suggest anyone pay $70 for this book but it was very good. The price is so high I think because of ...

Swift Justice: Murder and Vengeance in a California Town19 reviews
Harry Farrell

St Martins Pr, 1992

Definitely swift, possibly just, certainly very troubling
I must admit, I have a biased viewpoint. As a descendant of not one, not two, but three people who were summarily executed without the benefit of due process (one was most probably guilty --- the other two probably were not), accounts such as the San Jose Lynching tend to rub a raw nerve with me. In a brisk, wonderfully written narrative, the author sets the stage and lets the events unfold to ...

Games Criminals Play: How You Can Profit by Knowing Them26 reviews
Bud Allen, Diana Bosta

Rae John Publishers, 1981

A Must Read For Any Correctional Worker
This is an invaluable book for any correctional employee. It should be read by all new employees and reviewed by others from time to time. Having worked in the corrections field for many years, I have seen numerous variations of these 'games'. The authors do a great job of explaining how setups progress from beginning to endgame. They cover many case studies that show various ways that ...

I Cried You Didn't Listen: A Survivor's Expose of the California Youth Authority13 reviews
Dwight Edgar Abbott

Feral House, 1991

Jaw Dropper
I cried, You Didn't Listen was absolutely breath taking. The whole time I wanted to stop reading the horrors, but didnt stop looking at the text the entire way through the book. It placed a new perspective on a lot of things for me and I thank Abbott for such. This is a must read for anybody looking for some perspective on juvenile punishment within the Califonia Youth Authority. It is a tough ...

Machinery Malfunction Diagnosis and Correction: Vibration Analysis and Troubleshooting for Process Industries5 reviews
Robert C., Sr. Eisenmann

Prentice Hall PTR, 1997

Machinery Malfunction Diagnosis
Mr. Eisenmann has compiled his years of "hands on" experience into this book. Although the information contained within the book applies to most types of rotating machinery, it's focused on high speed process machinery with journal type bearings. I've read dozens of vibration analysis books and none even comes close to this one. It is a must have for any vibration analysis who needs to ...

Mid-Course Correction: Toward a Sustainable Enterprise: The Interface Model8 reviews
Ray Anderson

Peregrinzilla Press, 1999

Better Ecology Focus Brings More Profits and a Better World
This book deserves more than five stars. Mr. Anderson has taken an important step forward in leading Interface Corporation towards becoming ecologically neutral. By that phrase, ecologically neutral, I mean taking nothing from and adding nothing to the environment. This concept has become a popular one in Europe beginning in Sweden, in the form of The Natural Step, but has been much more slowly ...

NYPD Battles Crime: Innovative Strategies in Policing17 reviews
Eli B. Silverman

Northeastern, 1999

Everyone should read this book
I envy the students of Law, Criminal Justice etc. who will be using Dr. Silverman's book as a text book. It is a very well written, exciting account of how the largest police departement in the world used enlightened management techiques and a sophisticated computer system to drastically reduce crime in New York City. Business students and corporate managers can benefit from reading the book ...

Computational Fluid Dynamics9 reviews
John D. Anderson

McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math, 1995

A must read
In my opinion, this is the best book I have read in all my engineering life. The beauty of this book is in the author's ability to exactly understand what the students difficulties could possibly be and also help in removing the difficulties. NOBODY must read any other cryptic CFD book before he ventures into this superlative text. While reading this book I had a feeling of some professor ...

Steve Liss

University of Texas Press, 2005

Amazing!
Steve's work is this book is utterly amazing. His insight into the lives of these children is insightful. The photography truly speaks to you - you feel the photos in your heart - you can hear these kids speaking to you from the pages. To Serve and Protect: Privatization and Community in Criminal Justice (Political Economy of the Austrian ...4 reviews
Bruce Benson

NYU Press, 1998

More timely than ever, unfortunately
In the wake of a terrible terrorist attack, various public voices are arguing for liberty-threatening countermeasures -- increases in federal power, the placement of federal marshals on aircraft, the unreasonable search and seziure of airline passengers, and so forth. Almost unnoticed and unmentioned is the fact that the terrorists succeeded in killing thousands using, apparently, no weapon more ...

Corrections in America (10th Edition)3 reviews
Harry E. Allen, Clifford E. Simonsen, ...

Prentice Hall, 2004

What a book!!
I am using this textbook in a class and it is a whopper. Wonderful pictures, easy to read, clear colors and understandable. I've been working in prisons for 5 years and this book makes a lot of sense. You ought to read their sections on women in prison and on probation. I loved the parts on geriatric prisoners (old cons) and the death penalty. And it is easy to read. More!

Corrections in the 21st Century4 reviews
Frank Schmalleger, John Ortiz Smykla

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2000

The best textbook on corrections available!
I'm using this textbook in my community college course on corrections -- and I can't image how any book could be better. The book is built around a theme of professionalism in corrections and makes me want to work as a corrections officer -- and makes me want to improve the field. If you are interested in a career in corrections this book is for you -- whether or not you are currently in school.

Corrections in the Community3 reviews
Edward J. Latessa, Harry E. Allen

Anderson Publishing Company (OH), 2003

Corrections in the Community
I am a 3rd year Criminal Justice student and I must say that this is probably the best text that I have ever had. It is interesting, easy to read and very scholastic. It is actually a pleasure to read this book.

Golf Doctor: Diagnosis, Explanation and Correction of Golfing Faults3 reviews
John Jacobs, Dick Aultman

Victor Gollancz, 1989

This will help fix what ails your game
Long recognized as the master teacher to all the teachers who are now so famous on tv, Jacobs here has a mighty instruction book. Based on his revolutionary idea of ball flight feedback, one can easily find what pattern one's shots are taking, then apply the remedies listed for that ailment. His two turns and a swing is so simple, but profound. If there is one swing thought I fall back on, this ...

Saddle seat equitation4 reviews
Helen K Crabtree

Missouri Department of Corrections, 2002

Saddle Seat Equitation by Helen K. Crabtree
This is an absolutely superb treatise on Saddle Seat Equitation, particularly for those new to the sport. Even for experienced Saddle Seat riders, there is probably no clearer explanation of the basics of showing the saddle horse anywhere, and we all need a bit of review ocasionally! The book covers a wide scope of subjects connected with the training of horse and rider to enter the world of ...

Corrections: A Critical Approach4 reviews
Michael Welch

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2003

Against the compartmentalization of Justice
Since criminal justice only makes sense within the wider context of social justice, why do we insist on yoking law enforcement and the penal system with the fatal impasse of socioeconomic inequality and exploitation? As Professor Welch powerfully demonstrates, a large criminal justice system is a social failure -- much like dentistry, the criminal justice system's primary goal should be to put ...

Crime Control as Industry4 reviews
Nils Christie

Routledge, 1994

Essential Analysis of the Prison Crisis
The heavily revised third edition (2000) of Crime Control As Industry: Towards Gulags, Western Style is an essential guide to understanding the incarceration boom and considering how we can turn it around. The first book of Norwegian criminologist Nils Christie, Limits to Pain, argued that the criminal justice system is in fact a pain delivery system, with the size of the system controlled not by ...
