The Namesake: A Novel464 reviews
Jhumpa Lahiri

Mariner Books, 2004

Fun to read
The story, in general, was about the lives of Bengali migrants, how they fit in their new surroundings, and how their children reacted to Bengali traditions and customs. It is quite similar to a few other books before it. But The Namesake is written well and reading it is every bit as enjoyable as watching a movie. It is a little "chick-lit" but I liked it.

Life of Pi1827 reviews
Yann Martel

Harvest Books, 2003

Entertaining
I tore through all 330 pages in just a few days. I was fascinated by the story. It was refreshing to read soemthing so different; I couldn't put it down. Martel really did a fabulous job with this book. He gives the reader vivid imagery without being wordy. He keeps things entertaining throughout! This book was a little outside my traditional reading genre, but I absolutely loved it.

The Only Three Questions That Count: Investing by Knowing What Others Don't117 reviews
Kenneth L. Fisher

Wiley, 2006

Get a healthy new perspective on the markets
Fisher's book explodes a number of market myths that are taken as conventional wisdom by most investors, very much to their disadvantage. Fisher not only puts matters in perspective, he teaches you how to think about markets, how to identify opportunities, when to take risks, when to play safe, when to get in, when to get out, etc. I like the way he writes, stating general principles and backing ...

Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate--The Essential Guide for Progressives198 reviews
George Lakoff

Chelsea Green, 2004

Thinking Outside THE Box
I was one of millions of people who watched Faux News only-just 'for fun'. Now I understand why 9 million dollar salary of Bill O'reilly worth every penny.

Dracula (Enriched Classics Series)15 reviews
Bram Stoker

Pocket, 2003

A True Classic
Bram Stoker's influential late-Victorian novel remains a dominant presence in the realm of horror and vampire literature. While some modern readers may have difficulty with the late 19th-century writing style, the novel itself is a rewarding experience for anyone willing to consider the work, and the use of language should not be held against its brilliance. Though not the first word in ...

Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)32 reviews
Steve Solomon

New Society Publishers, 2006

Detailed, Valuable Advice
Gardening When It Counts is truly a book for our times. There's already a well-deserved buzz about this book among home gardeners I know. For one thing, it firmly refutes the supposed advantages of mulch gardening. In the burgeoning nationwide return to growing our own vegetables, it's important to produce the most food for the least amount of effort and expense, and this book offers the very ...

The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics)114 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Penguin Classics, 2003

An AMAZING book!
Wow. I am so glad to have bought this book. I cannot put it down! At first I must admit I was intimidated by its size as well as the period it was written. I find that many period books are really dense and difficult reads. Not this one at all!!! Easy to read and such a gripping tale! It draws you in and you do not want to put it down. I am so glad that I am reading the unabridged version because ...

Don't Make Me Count to Three: a Mom's Look at Heart-Oriented Discipline91 reviews
Ginger Plowman

Shepherd Press, 2004

Definitely a Keeper!
This book is great! Some reviews have said that it promotes spanking, but the bottom line is that if you don't spank you are doing your child a disservice and that's exactly what this author is saying in her book. She doesn't say that a parent should be abusive and just spank for no reason or just make up a reason to beat their child. Rather she admonishes parents to teach the child the correct ...

The Multifidus Back Pain Solution: Simple Exercises That Target the Muscles That Count27 reviews
Jim Johnson

New Harbinger Publications, 2002

Unbelievable... a borderline miracle.... 10++ stars
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! I had back surgery 2 years ago (L1-L2 thru L3-L4 lumbar diskectomy) to relieve severe lower back pain and sciatica pain in the left leg. Although the surgery relieved the sciatica, regularly every 4-6 weeks I subsequently had recurring "episodes" which took 2-3 weeks to subside. I was walking, swimming, stretching, etc., all to no avail. Skelaxin and Mobic ...

Amy Tan

Ballantine Books, 2006

Brilliant! Amy Tan does it again!
Loved this book by Amy Tan. Tan crafts an amazing tale that had me laughing and on the edge of my seat. I enjoy the way she weaves the Chinese and Burmese superstitions into the lives of modern day travelers. I highly recommend this book.

Driven by Eternity: Making Your Life Count Today & Forever76 reviews
John Bevere

FaithWords, 2006

A Must-Read
This book has impacted how I think and act on a daily basis. It brought eternity into focus for me and has changed many of the beliefs I had accepted without really challenging them against scripture. Bevere gives multiple scriptures as back up for his premises. We were so challenged as a couple that we ordered a case of the books to pass to our family and friends!

Twenty-Odd Ducks: Why, every punctuation mark counts!
Lynne Truss

Putnam Juvenile, 2008

Commas and apostrophes aren’t the only punctuation marks that can cause big trouble if they’re put in the wrong place. Now, Truss and Timmons put hyphens, parentheses, quotation marks, periods, and more in the spotlight, showing how which marks you choose and where you put them can cause hilarious mix-ups.

Not what I expected. Though well outlined it could have given more details.

Dracula (Norton Critical Editions)19 reviews
Bram Stoker

W. W. Norton, 1996

Still the best
This is still the best vamp book around, bar none. I was always upset with Coppola's movie because he used Stoker's name, and made the count into this loving anti-hero. THIS is Dracula. Pure evil.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work38 reviews
Richard Carlson

Hyperion, 1998

A Combination of Motivational and Practical Advice
Much of the stress we experience comes not from the workplace but from our reactions to our workplace. Most of Carlson's little book focuses on how we need to change our attitudes in order to minimize stress. For instance, work should be seen as something that we get to do rather than something that we have to do. Enjoy life now--don't wait for retirement! Problems should be seen as speed ...

In the Line of Fire: How to Handle Tough Questions...When It Counts38 reviews
Jerry Weissman

Prentice Hall, 2005

Delivers as advertised...
Far too often I have picked up a self-help book and either set it down unread because it was pure drudgery - - or I read it to conclusion to learn that it failed to deliver the self-help mechanics that I was looking for. This book delivered. It was a quick and entertaining read and provided straightforward techniques for dealing with tough questions in a debate, a business presentation or ...
