Acrosss the Lines reveiw
Inside the chimney parlor Simon concentrated on bracing himself against the sooty bricks " He won't find me." " He won't find me." Carolyn Reeder's book Across the Lines is about a 12 year old boy named Edward. His parents have a slave named Simon who is a little older than Edward but Simon is more of a friend than a slave to Edward. All thoughts change when the Yankees take over and Simon ...

Rhem's Meatyard
In James Rhem's book Meatyard's well-known Lucybelle Crater photographs are reproduced in the family album setting that the photographer himself planned they should have, but never got during his lifetime. The photographs are printed on black pages, with handwritten captions underneath; the images are arranged in groups, & the groups are themselves sequenced. For those who like Meatyard's ...

Fascinating
Great account of the evolution of the meteor impact theory of mass extinction. He provides a detailed account of the scientific processes involved in the discovery of the Chixulub crater and its relation to the end of the Cretaceous period. As a scientist in another field, I found it to be very informative for the lay reader (non-paleontologist/geologist, etc.).
The Far Side of the Moon: A Photographic Guide (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy)
Charles J. Byrne
Springer
, 2007
The far side of the Moon, also called the "dark side of the Moon" was unknown to humanity until the Luna and Lunar Orbiter pictures were returned to Earth. Even since then, its nature has puzzled researchers. Now we know that a giant impact struck the near side with such force that it created the ?near side megabasin?, opening the way for floods of mare and sending vast amounts of ejecta to the far side. The Far Side of the Moon explains this ...

The "Killer Angels" type novel of the Crater at Petersburg.
From a top-notch historian comes top-notch historical fiction bringing light and life to the story of the Crater at Petersburg like "Killer Angels" did for Gettysburg. The story is told from the viewpoint of the Union Army's 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers, raised in the coal-mining country of Pennsylvania, and commanded by a former mining engineer. Individual players are brought to life, from ...

Sgt. Sister
Sister (Dorothy) Parrish was "gently" born, and she played this card like a violin all her life to great success. Expensively, but scantily educated Sister had an "eye" for proportion and taste that never failed her. Her decorating services became astronomically expensive, yet she had a Grande Dame persona that made her clients feel she was doing them a great favor by decorating their homes. ...

Really adds to a trip
We have used four of the Deckers' national park road guides so far and found them all to be worthwhile--especially at their low price. The guides help ensure that you don't miss the "must see" places. This is especially useful if you have to allocate your time carefully.

Jimmy Hoffa Wasn't the only one.
We all know of the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. But he was not the first. In 1930 Judge Joseph Crater cashed some checks for about $5,000 and went to dinner with some friends. Parting with the friends on the curb outside the restaurant he was never seen again. For fifty years the New York City Police Department tried to find him. Certainly dead by now (he's be 115 years old) there are no really ...

It seemed like a good idea at the time.......
And, really, it was not that bad of an idea. Problem is, it didn't work, and caused around 5,000 needless casualties. Let us not forget, though, that it almost did work, and that it was a Confederate victory, as well as a monumental Union blunder. I saw this new release a couple of weeks ago, and had to have it...I work at the Army hospital at Ft. Lee, and, when not providing medical care for ...

A comprehensive account accessable to laymen
This is a thorough account of meteorite craters intended mainly for the layman. However it does not shortchange the technical side when necessary. It uses the historical method, unrolling the story of meteorites and meteorite craters from about the 17th century to the present. It starts with the story of how scientists came to accept stones falling from the sky as a real phenomenon. It then ...

A superb addition to a great series
I purchased this book after reading a glowing review of it from the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm very glad I purchased it. This latest addition to the Bicycling America's National Parks series is informative, helpful, and truly captures the ambience of the different national parks it covers. It's not just national parks, but national recreation areas, and national monuments too, and you really ...

Fast Paced Plot
I stayed up all night to finish this book. I couldn't put it down! Author Jonathan Miller knows how to tell a great story and peppers it with unusual characters and places it in a very surreal small Southwestern town. Different for sure, but very, very readable.

Traveling in Russia and Fascinating Facts about Meteorites
I am surprised to see that no one has reviewed this book until now; it's been out for about two years and the title is certainly intriguing. Anyway, this book contains a nearly homogeneous mixture of essentially two seemingly unrelated subjects: (i) traveling within Russia and (ii) information on meteorites. The first is presented as a travelogue; it includes all sorts of little details on travel ...

Mars cards and map mean science fun
We have a 3rd grader and a 6th grader, both boys. Our youngest especially loved these cards, saying "Wow!" as he opened the package and plowed through the contents, reading each card. They enjoy all of the cool facts like how Olympus Mons is more than twice as high as Everest. This is a fun product for family trips: the kids get to stump the parents with their new-found knowledge. The ...

A "must read" and perfect for your home library
This book is a treasure - it seems to be one of a kind! It provides a coupling of American History and people of Christian faith. The very short stories about fifty people from 1000 through 1900A.D.(from Lief Ericson through Katherine Lee Bates), are factual, brief, and interesting with colorful illustrations. My four-year old son loves this book to be read to him, especially at bedtime. ...
