Great Book!
I hope to encorporate this book into my Introduction to Poetry class this fall. My students are really going to be suprised that poetry can be so fun and yet so damned insightful and relevant. A real tribute to the importance of alternative presses/publishing firms.

Exciting, important topic. Who owns the movie rights? Why hasn't this book ever been made into a movie?

Gothic comics - An outstanding blend of words and pictures
Edgar Allan Poe is a natural choice as the first volume of the Graphic Classics volumes, a series partially inspired by the Classic Illustrated collection of comic books, which attempted to lure young readers into reading respectable, "classic" authors through the comics medium. This new incarnation, however, takes an entirely different tact, combining fantastic literary stories with equally ...

Crumb is Crumb, & Kafka Kafka
For those who came to look at/buy this book via Ian Buruma's passing mention in the New York Review of Books (4/6/06), in which he states the "the book does [Crumb and Kafka] both a disservice": Don't believe it. As another reviewer said, I found this book strangely moving; and the Illustrated Classics reference is unfortunate. The enforcement - sometimes passive - of the high-low cultural ...

"So what is it you like about that old music?" *
Wow! Every so often you run across something that knocks your socks off. R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz, & Country left me barefooted. In the 1980s, Robert Crumb, whom Robert Hughes appropriately once called the "Breughel of the 20th century," created sets of trading cards featuring some of his favorite blues, jazz, and country musicians. (The plan was to include one card per LP sold by ...

"Who IS Harvey Pekar?"
This collection of Pekar writings from the 1970s and 80s was issued on the heels of the film "American Splendor," and it collects some of the best of Pekar's earlier work. Although not exclusively chronological, the presentation of the material gives a good idea of Pekar's life from his post-high school days through his meeting and marrying Joyce Brabner. (For a strictly chronological memoir, ...

Confessional comix
A generation ago, American poets such as Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Anne Sexton gave birth to a genre that's come to be known as "confessional poetry." Their verse revealed intimate facts about their lives that simply weren't spoken of in polite company: fears, phobias, sexual hang-ups, pettiness, depression, suicidal tendencies. Some of their work wound up being rather ...

Interesting, Evolving Woman!
I have always loved and looked forward to Aline K-C's work. She is about 11 years older than me and everything she goes through, well, a few years later, I go through it too! I think of her as a kind of sister, preparing me for the road ahead. In this large and slightly unwieldy book, she gives us autobiographical data that might not go down too well with your average nerd-boy in the USA, ...

Not his best stuff?? What are you talking about???
The review above says this is not Crumb's best stuff, and not to buy anything from "This Publisher." This makes NO SENSE, because Fantagraphics is publishing THE COMPLETE WORKS of ROBERT CRUMB, in order, from his early years right up to the present. Crumb supervises each release and writes the introductions to each volume. Furthermore, Fantagraphics is one of the best publishers of quality ...

You can learn so much from Conversations
Poor ol' Robert Crumb, reluctantly labeled father of the underground comic movement has moved to France with his lovely, comely and protectant wife. These conversations help the reader get into Crumb's head. They give an autobiographical and historical perspective of Crumb, from his harsh family atmosphere to when he escaped from a greeting card company to find the summer of love in ...

An inspiring collection of stories by real women.
The stories in "Crumbs" will inspire you not only to write, but to keep on with your day-to-day existence. Read women's struggles with juggling families, homes, jobs and the love of writing. Highly recommended!

CERTAINLY worth buying
Like Daniel Clowes of "Eightball" fame, it could be fairly said that Robert Crumb's earlier work is his best work -- not to say his later stuff is poor -- far from it. But his earlier work has a raw cynicism, an agression, a desperation, a sadness, and a hilarious sense of hysterical, neurotic humour which is self mocking and stops him from ever coming accross as overtly judgemental, arrogant or ...

The Continuation of an Awesome Story!
We bought this book at the LA Festival of Books where we had come upon the first book last year. We purchased the book on Sunday and my 10 year old daughter had finished it by Tuesday. She is describing it for me here: The second story picks up where the 1st left off when Romeo awakes from the "death" of his first life. He tries to help a friend, Twinkletoes, who is having problems with his ...

Review from Bear Alley by Steve Holland (June, 2008)
"As you might expect with a book called Erotic Comics: A Graphic History, I've not had much chance to read the text but I have looked at the pictures... and I'm still managing to type with both hands. That's not meant as a criticism. This is 'erotic' comics rather than outright pornography so, as they say in Bladerunner, reaction time is a factor. It's actually a very good book covering the ...

Social commentary and raunchy behavior
Fans of Crumb's biting comics of social commentary and raunchy behavior will find this set of comics continues the chronological series covering his complete work. Here Mode O'Day and Her Pals are the feature, covering his cartoons from 1983-85. A centerfold of fine color images provides lively full-page panels; most of the presentation is in classic black and white.

just amazing
This is one of the most extraordinary collections of vintage world music that I have run across. It is somewhat along the lines of the "Secret Museum of Mankind" series from a few years back, but compiler R.Crumb outdid himself in the selections and the sequencing, making it a big pleasure to listen to casually as well as to study with attention. The variety, the charm, the deep emotion, the ...

Crumb meets Kafka...meets Crumb
Kafka was a complex man whose genius is inseparable from his huge neuroses. So is Robert Crumb. Put the two together, as this book does, and the upshot is a book in which the distinction between author Crumb and subject Kafka tends to dissolve. The book is just as much about the one as the other. It's no mistake that Crumb is drawn (sorry for the bad pun) to Kafka. At one level, the book ...

Great for children and grandchildren!
This is an excellent book full of color and creativity. Our daughters love this book so much that we give it as gifts. Their eyes lit up when they saw both English and Spanish. We would like to have more books of this kind for our children. Our eldest child (9) says, "It is an amazing fun book." Our youngest (7) says, "I like it!" - Jan Wood
