Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel (Elvis Cole)

Robert Crais does not disappoint!
My spouse and I are avid readers of both the Elvis Cole and Stephanie Plum (by Janet Evanovich) series. Both are plagued by longtime fans who have grown so close to these characters that they think they can dictate their demeanor and mood, as well as critiquing the freshness of the plot. Between the two series, the Elvis Cole books are definitely more plot-driven, but it is still the characters ...

An excellent piece of epistemology!
On page 3, the narrator (not Marlow) tells us that "Marlow was not typical (if his propensity to spin yarns be excepted), and to him the meaning of an episode was not inside like a kernel but outside, enveloping the tale which brought it out only as a glow brings out a haze, in the likeness of one of these misty halos that sometimes are made visible by the spectral illumination of moonshine." ...

Wonderful ending to a wonderful series!
Once again Dodd came through! What a WONDERFUL ending! I cried at the end, not because it was over, but because it ended so well. Doug and Firebird were the PERFECT match. Dodd told their story without rehashing previous stories over much. There wasn't as much sex in this book either, but that doesn't detract from the story in the least. Doug is the most sensitive of all the brothers in my ...

Loved this one!
I have read all three of the series and am secretly waiting for the last one but I would have to say this was my favorite. The wolf was sooo intriguing that it had my hair standing up. The fact that he could smell her mood swings or sense her LOVE for him was beautiful! Ann was just right in my view point. A little withdrawn but came out of her shell when necessary. The story line was good and ...

Hard core - don't miss it!
A very strange chapter in the Pendergast story, The Wheel of Darkness has to do with a missing Tibetan relic that could bring about the end of the world. Pendergast and his ward Constance learn about the theft while at the Tibetan monastery to help Constance after Diogenes brought about the collapse of her delicate psyche in Book of the Dead. Pendergast believes the thief is taking part in the ...

No fool ever made a bargain for his soul with the devil. Inconsequential story by another Marlow (Charlie)
I was motivated to re-visit Conrad's early masterpiece by Sebald's Walk in Suffolk, which contains a bio chapter on Conrad with emphasis on his Congo experience, which was a traumatic one. Conrad had taken up the job of a skipper of a river steamboat, but he quit after a short time, in disgust with the colonial practices of the Belgians and their crude exploitation methods. Marlow is Conrad's ...

Wickedly delicious!
Christina Dodd's characters are strong, stubborn, interesting, and fun. Some romances have rather cardboard male leads, but hers, thankfully, do not. The background plot regarding the Varinski and Wilder families, the pact with the devil, and the prophecy to redeem the Wilder branch of the family is wonderfully conceived and executed. It's a fresh and fascinating take on things, and is used ...

"Mistah Kurtz--he dead." An influential work on five 20th century seminal works
I read this book for a graduate Humanities course. Buy this edition, it is the best with great critical essays. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, written in 1899 is a seminal work about the ills of colonialism, as well as a postmodern look at the subject of mankind. Conrad's book had a crucial influence on five important works of the twentieth century: J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. ...

This book is So helpful. It's Not "the blues" - it's a living nightmare!
I have bought over 30 copies of this book, as gifts to friends, colleagues, and relatives. I hope you readers see that that is the highest recommendation one can give. It explains, in a very concise manner, major depression to those who have not experienced it. And an "Amen" from individuals who have experienced it. Depression is perhaps THE under-diagnosed illness of our time (along with ...

Brilliant as always
For those of you who are worried because Mignola is no longer drawing Hellboy, don't be. I was worried too, but this Fegredo guy is great. He apes Mignola's dramatic shading style while adding more detail and nuance to the character designs. If anything, I'd say the art looks better than in previous volumes (no offense Mr. Mignola, should you happen to read this!) Of course, Mignola is still ...

Amazing - non - stop - still my favorite trilogy
I read these books several years ago, than again a few years later and I am about going to read them on my vacation for a third time. I have owned them two times, only to share them and never get them returned. This will be my final set to own, hopefully, as I will forever hold onto these. I still can't find any books that have touched me as much as these three. AMAZING writing and I still ...

Connections, contrasts and darkness cloak the answers
(review is of the 2001 Warner Books edition) We re-visit a lot of old friends in this interesting mystery, full of twists and turns. Terry McCaleb (last seen in Blood Work), who is a retired FBI profiler, is contacted by Jay Winston for help on a case. She wants him to do a profile for her. At first he refuses, but he finally relents and agrees to do the profile. However, he ends up being ...

This is a great book
This book is amazing. Is a "dark" story, with vampires, witches and what-not, but it also has a nice sense of humor and irony, coming from the mouths of the two main characters, Abby and Dante. I also like Viper, a very prominent secondary character (who's going to be the main character of the following book, yay!), who's a dark and powerful vampire. The plot is a nice inventive, which I very ...

A terrific update/remake
When Hunter: The Reckoning came out, I was overjoyed. As a Storyteller, I enjoy telling stories from the human's perspective more. I find their struggle against the odds more in line with my skills and intents for telling stories. What I got was a good book, but it kind of took the focus in a more action-oriented, "blockbuster" arena. I still used it, but I thought for all the cool skills and ...

Psychological Examination of Stalinist Show Trials
Set during the Stalinist purges and show trials, `Darkness at Noon' presents a fictionalized account of the interrogation and breaking of a (former) communist leader `Rubashov'. Under Stalin, 'former communists' were limited to those persons about to be executed, already executed, or waiting to be uncovered. As an original Bolshevik, a leader of the 1917 revolution, Rubashov's disillusionment was ...

The Best!
Last year I stumbled across this author by a friend loaning me her book. Wow. I've loved the two first books in this series. Ivy can actually combine humor (I actually laugh out loud once in awhile) with suspense. This book did not disappoint. I hope she continues this series, at least until it is no longer fresh. I love her style of writing.

"The truth will set you free"
I read The Bondage Breaker a few months ago, and I picked up this book after reading it. However, I decided to put it away and read it later on, in a time where I'd need some spiritual uplifting, revelation and/or affirmation. Well, that time was now, and after going through a rather difficult time, this book called out to me in the worst possible time in my life. Neil T. Anderson does with ...
