A fascinating insight into a very different place
I was sent this book to read and started it in earnest, having not read much travel literature before. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Michael Kohn adopts a very conversational style to tell his story and each episode is told well. He illustrates all the people he met with such detail that by the end you feel you know them and I was heartened to read that he married one of his friends whom ...

the making of the writer
In 1920 an unknown young American landed a reporting assignment with The Toronto Star. He moved to Paris, and over the next four years wrote 172 mostly by-lined pieces, and incidentally established his place as a professional writer. That young man was Ernest Hemingway. "Dateline Toronto" is a collection of all 172 of his pieces for The Star. There is serious reportage on conditions in ...

Are modern humans and institutions like Ancient Greece?
I have read, both in my childhood and adulthood, many different versions of the Trojan War. The version in this book is well written for both adult and younger audiences. What is most interesting in this book, however, is its attempt in every page to relate something about behaviors and practices in Ancient Greece to those we find in modern times. The author very ably does this by placing ...

Wonderful Glimpse!
I read her "Front Row at the White House" first and expected to get the same information, just not as many presidents. But in her first book, Ms. Thomas included more information than in her second book. You've always read about the presidents, by reading this book you get a 'behind the scenes' glimpse into their lives and how the reporters do their jobs.

Zola Levitt

Delightful Read
As witnessed on his television program, Mr. Levitt was a master armchair raconteur, (he went to be with the Lord April 19), and more so when sifting through end time puzzles. "Dateline Jerusalem," therefore supplies the reader a delightful read, especially those akin to Mr. Levitt's theological leanings, though one reviewer has already noted agreeing with Zola greatly while still disagreeing ...

Dateline Soweto: Travels with Black South African Reporters
William Finnegan
University of California Press
, 1995
Dateline Soweto documents the working lives of black South African reporters caught between the mistrust of militant blacks, police harrassment, and white editors who--fearing government disapproval--may not print the stories these reporters risk their lives to get. William Finnegan revisited several of these reporters during the May 1994 election and describes their post-apartheid working experience in a new preface and epilogue.
