A little while to live...and nothing to lose!
I first heard of Shaun Hutson as being a British horror writer who was being compared to people like James Herbert (somebody even called him 'Herbert's little brother'). With this novel I found out he can write about so much more than just 'slugs' and 'ghouls in the graveyard'. I understand that since he's steered even more away from the horrorgenre with his later efforts. That may be a pity, but ...

Essential!!
If you are a taper, collector, trader, or just forgot what opened the second set in the last Philly JFK show, then this book is a must. Finally make a setlist for all those unidentified MP3s. Check off what you have to make trading easier. Get goosebumps over one of the transitions you forgot about. Kick yourself for working and not seeing the second night. If you collect you gotta have this ...

A necessity for any tape trader
I bought this book when I was just beginning to trade Grateful Dead tapes, and now I use it every time I set out to make a trade. This book gives me at least some idea about the show before I trade for it, allowing me to pick only shows I'm really interested in. In short, I highly recommend it to anyone who is at all interested in collecting Grateful Dead tapes.

Love it
"Cooking With the Dead" is full of fabulous pictures and interviews with Deadheads and some great recipes. I was kind of disappointed that there were recipes for beef kabobs and tuna melts in what I had thought would be a vegetarian cookbook, but I overlooked them. 3 Bean Veggie Chilli is a tasty dish I have enjoyed making. The Gilly Melt is quite tasty, and I am very intrigued by ...

They've done it again!
Michael Goetz and company have done it again! This book has more in-depth, historical interviews with tapers from the Deadhead community, more information on soundboard releases, and another batch of incredible photos from people's collections. Sure, there are some errors in song titles and some missing shows, but there are a number of fine reviews by a number of contributors. If you enjoyed ...

A great history of the Grateful Dead in print
I highly recommend this this book for anyone who is into the Grateful Dead. It attempts to catalog/catagorize in 400 pages everything that has ever been written about the Dead. In doing so it also becomes a record of the history of the band through the years. It covers nearly 3000 entries all annotated with helpful information. It is a great tool for anyone that has and extensive collection of ...

Well-written, awesomely-researched insights, and fun too
This is mainly a book for deadheads. But not only. It's fascinating to read the varied styles and insights of so many people, so different, all absorbed in the same music. The writing and editing are good, and actually make it a pleasure to read about many radically different and creative versions of the same songs. This makes the book extremely interesting, but anyone interested in the ...

Blew my Mind!!
I had found this book when I was in high school. Then I loaned it to someone who loaned it to someone else who loaned it to another person, and then I lost track. I finally found it again!! This book opened my mind so much. I am now aware. I was never a big deadhead, and this book didn't change my mind about them but it sure blew me away. If you're looking for a book that can awaken your true ...

Reasons we followed the band...
As a Deadhead, this is one of the things I've been waiting for. This is a wonderful collection of papers concerning one of the most influential "bands" in American culture. I recommend this to any Deadhead, and I recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered why we saw as many shows as we did, why we traveled across the country every season, and why we still continue to listen to their music. ...

Wonderful!!
I have both cookbooks by Elizabeth Peace Zipern, and I love them both and use them quite often (my favorites being the iced double mocha, the Galactic grilled cheese, the Congo Bars, and many more). Whether you're a Deadhead or not, vegan or not, you will enjoy these cookbooks. I loved the stories and the crafts that were featured in them. It made me feel that I was actually there at a show. ...

A picture of what Tour was reallty like
Outstanding book from an author who lived the scene and has worked years at his craft of writing. Drug use - yes. That was an inevitable part of the scene at a Dead show. "philly head" may find it distasteful, but that's his problem. I had the great pleasure of watching and reading this book as it evolved over the years. If you ever quit your job and grew your hair to go on Tour, chances ...

Yikes...an oldie but goodie!
This one was definitely way up on my list of favorites. The play on language is even funny to me, a deaf person! I figure Hill must have known about the Grateful Dead, and the resident Deadheads, who I grew up with in the Bay Area in California. The information about roses was wonderful since my Dad planted them, but certainly was not as obsessive about his flowers as Patrick. This rather ...

Polaroids from an amazing author
Every time I pick up a Coupland book I am always pleasantly surprised. Polaroids is a quick and easy read. The sections are split up into 5-10 page short stories. These small pieces are set in three parts. The first being short observations of the many different people you would find at a greatful dead concert. Coupland delves into the reasons each person comes to the concert and their daily ...
Perspectives on the Grateful Dead: Critical Writings

A fresh perspective
I read this book while writing an American Literature paper on the songs of the Grateful Dead. I think it is fantastic..because it presents a fresh and interesting (though very academic) perspective on a topic that most deadheads know so well. It also really made me think about the Deadhead community and how I participated in it. This book is something that most heads probably haven't read, ...

Thinkingman's Dead!
This is a wonderful collection of essays from ACTUAL American philosophers and professors who share a loose common bond that is stronger than dirt - they are all Deadheads. Every angle is discussed, from the social contract and economics of the tie-dye sellers in the parking lot to philosophical underpinnings of August West. There is something here for everyone who grew up a Deadhead and longs ...
