Social History
Dreams in the Golden Country / 0-590-02973-8 It seems I like all the Dear America books, and this one is no exception. Although I read them for myself, and these books are certainly entertaining and interesting for adults, I try to review them as a parent would, to allow the concerned parent to understand what their child is reading. The Good: Although I was expecting something a little ...

Dear America: Letters from Vietnam13 reviews

Pocket, 1987

First hand account of the Vietnam War
After the amazing documentary about Vietnam that solely exists of actor voice overs of funny, goofy, anxious and heartbreaking letters home from soldiers at the battlefront in Vietnam, accompanied by graphic footage of the war itself, this book came out. It contains the letters read out in the movie, and additionally has some more background information about the soldiers who wrote the letters. ...

Dear People: Remembering Jonestown9 reviews

Heyday Books, 2005

Reminded me of The Killing Fields
After having read Deborah Layton's book about Jim Jones, I thought I wanted a somewhat more objective book so I ordered this one. And it didn't disappoint me. Dear People is a compelling presentation of personal stories, official documents and fascinating photos which really gave me the information I was looking for. No drama or ethos, just the plain facts. I've read many books about the Pol Pot ...

A Line in the Sand: the Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawrence, Gonzales, Texas 1836 (Dear America Series)35 reviews
Sherry Garland

Scholastic Inc., 1998

Alamo Diary Opened My Mind
What a fun read! I was not too enthusiastic about this book but I gave it a try anyway. I'm glad I did! Wall-to-wall action and relevant description abound in this story about a misunderstood historical period. I read this a few years ago and I still remember how good it was. Recently I read another book about the Alamo, and it makes me appriciate how well-written this one is. I don't agree that ...

A beautiful book with a gripping narrative!

A Time For Courage: The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen, Washington, D.C. 1917 (Dear America Series)19 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Scholastic Inc., 2002

One of the Best in the Series
A Time for Courage by Kathryn Lasky is one of my all-time favorite books in the Dear America historical fiction series. It is not particularly my favorite era of American history, but it is so well-written and interesting you just fall right in. Kathleen Bowen's mother, aunt, older sister, and best friend's mother are all deeply involved in women's suffrage and equality rights, living in ...

Bernard Edelman

Topeka Bindery, 2002

Dear America
These books are very interesting and informative. It is important for people, especially children, to read. They will only do so if the books spark their interest. Dreams In The Golden Country (Dear America Series)2 reviews

Scholastic, 2000

I love it
This was the first Dear America diary I ever read, and I love it more than any of the others except A Picture Of Freedom. Perhaps it is because of what I learned in history as a young child about the Second World War, and the Civil War - but I have always had a special feeling about blacks and Jews. At any rate, "Zippy" and Clottee stole my heart. Dreams do come true.
