Can Values Be Derived from Evolutionary Biology
In "Debating Darwin", John C. Greene displays an impressive knowledge of intellectual history in regards to science and evolution's relationship and non-relationship to Western tradition. The format of the book is also impressive for someone who dares to "debate" Darwin. He publishes letters of correspondence with two eminent scientists (Theodosius Dobzhansky and Ernst Mayr). The debates ...

Public Speaking from Start to Finish!
"Talk the Talk" is the book I always needed and never had. With creative examples and clear explanations, it tells you what to say and how to say it. Merali's examples are well-structured, insightful, and often humourous. This book takes you from start to finish - and doesn't miss a step along the way! -Rowan Dorin, 2003 World Debating and Public Speaking Champion

A dated but still worthwhile gathering of perspectives
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Debating the Gay Ban in the Military" is edited by Aaron Belkin and Geoffrey Bateman. The book collects the proceedings from a conference, held in December 2000, entitled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Is the Gay Ban Based on Military Necessity or Prejudice?" In the book's preface it is noted that views opposing the inclusion of gays in the military are underrepresented because ...

An interesting and enjoyable read
I recently read a copy of Rebekah Dunn's "The Spaceship that crashed on the moon" and found it to be an interesting and enjoyable read. It seems ironic that a community can complain about being hated or discriminated against on the one hand, but then seem to have no problem hating or discriminating against other groups.

A Perfect Balance Between Fiction and Philosophy
The Creed Room by Daniel Spiro is an engaging, thought provoking read that examines a wide range of social and political issues through the eyes and ideas of its richly developed characters. It is highly readable, and extremely entertaining, as one easily and quickly gets caught up in the characters and storyline. Yet Spiro skillfully balances the entertainment with philosophy as he encourages ...

Walking, Talking, Debating, and Arguing With God
This book is written as a series of short stories or journal entries concerning the spiritual growth of the author. It is very easy to read and each chapter can be read independently of the others. The author shares experiences that many people can relate to, whether or not they consider themselves to be "religious". Many of the stories contained humor that made me laugh out loud, yet by the ...

Excellent Introduction to controversies in Ancient Israelite archaeology
This is an excellent introduction to the latest research in Biblical Archaeology, presenting a middle ground between the Minimalist and Maximalist debate which has sought to polarise the issue over the last 15 years. Both Finkelstein and Mazar are leading exponents in the field of Post-processual Archaeology, but neither are afraid of examining where the Biblical record is confirmed or ...

ATTN: High School Policy Debaters and Coaches
I debated in the National Forensics League and the Urban Debate League for two years, and GIFTED TONGUES does a never-before-seen job in detailing the high school policy debate sub-culture. GIFTED TONGUES is the only book in the market that goes into the workings of several modern high school policy debate teams. Other books that claim to attempt to describe policy debate are out of date with the ...

Some very interesting articles
Those of us who have read the Guardian for decades, or watched the BBC news, know that they have a problem: an obsession with Israel. British attitudes towards the Jews of Israel have had their ups and downs. This book tells us where things now stand. We see that violent antisemitic incidents have gone up somewhat in the past couple of decades. And I noted with interest that such incidents ...

Helpful and Constructive Debate Text!
Elements of Parliamentary Debate is a user-friendly text covering parliamentary debate that I found both engaging to read and a useful debate reference. Apart from a solid explanation of the basics for a novice debater, the book works well for experienced debaters and students/professionals interested in improving their knowledge and skills in argumentation and persuasion. Examples throughout ...

Required reading for scholars and citizens alike.
This book lays out in precise detail how media coverage of recent American military interventions has been determined by the spectrum of debate within the government itself. As a result, the press has reported only a very limited set of positions vis-a-vis these wars. Consensus within the government about them has led to the appearance of national consensus, and informed dissent has in such ...

A very good book!
It is one the Sweet Dreams books that I have read. Lani's love was in a tug-of-war either for Chase, her debate captain who was always too serious about things and hurt her for his constructive criticism, or either Sam, the funny guy. She liked them both, but to whom was her heart really pointing to. You better find out for yourself. Hope you enjoy reading the book! I recommend it.

This text is a fantastic work in helping to illuminate the use of debate in the context of Tibetan doctrinal work, specifically in the Proponents of Sutra Following Reasonsing (Sautrantika). While it does serve its purpose in doing so, Dan Perdue has also helped to explain some of the fundamental topics in Tibetan Buddhism, such as established bases and the different forms of reasoning. If you are teaching a course in cultural studies, women's studies, history of science, or social theory, do your students a favor and place this book on your syllabus. I cannot think of another recent study that engages in such an incisive, informative, and reader-friendly manner with the crucial questions of the relationship between cognitive evolutionary science and feminism. A Wonderful Debate on the Resurrection
Dr. John Dominic Crossan is the co-chairman of the media darlings known as the Jesus Seminar. Dr. William Craig is (in my opinion) the best Christian apologist of the late 20th century who has specialized his theological research on the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus in 3 major academic books. The give and take of this debate much favored Craig in which he clearly won. Craig argued ...
