Good book on deciduous forests
Introduces readers to deciduous forests and the five layers (canopy, understory, shrub, herb, and floor) that make up this biome. The book layout and photos throughout are very good. The book contains a glossary and short bibliography. Instead of listing a bunch of web sites that could be obsolete even before the book is published, the book gives one link to a resource that the publisher will ...

A Deep-Time Perspective on Global Warming
This is the book that launched our citizen naturalists group on the internet: Torreya Guardians. In reading Hazel's book, I was struck by how important the "pocket reserves" were to the preservation of rich forest species during the peak of the last glacial episode some 18,000 years ago (as well as all the previous glacial episodes). One of those pocket reserves runs along the edge of the ...

Hidden treasure
I was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is ...

Beautiful, beautiful book
Whether you are planning a woodland garden, look out on a woodland garden, or just dream of woodland gardens, this book is a must have. It is the most beautiful, awe-inspiring garden book I've ever encountered. The photos are the first layer of beauty. The descriptions of the plants are the second layer of beauty. The suggested arrangements of trees, shrubs and flowers are the third layer ...

no one has written a better book
As other reviews write, it is certainly a humble book. The section on the training of young trees (a mere 2 1/2 pages) is concise, easy to follow, and copied by many newer authors. Available at most nursery stores. You can find thicker books with more pictures and more discussion, but still, no improvement. Available from: Martin Bio-Products, Burbank CA. Carried by many nurseries, incl. ...

A tooth book that will make you smile!
One of the great traumas for kids is when they lose thier baby teeth. This book helps kids with the wonder and confusion when thier teeth wobble and fall out. With it's colorful pictures, lots of stickers and a big toothy poster this book is probably the best book on the subject I've ever seen. Smart dentists will probably want to keep this book in their offices to help explain what's going on to ...

GREAT LITTLE BOOK FOR THE HOME GARDENER
Great little book for the home gardener. 8"x4" reference book with good illustrations. I use it all the time, and I use it every year, my trees look healthy and natural because the pruning instructions are clear. I was on here looking for another copy, great gift for new gardeners. That says alot, this is a book I would give over and over again but I wouldn't part with my issue!

Very informative , good overview of all ecological processes
This book is a must for anyone who is considering naural resource management as a career, as I am. It deals with the basic ecological terms and poses some very difficult problems that forest management will occure in the recent future. If you are interested in conservation, and not preservation, this book will be a wise investment.

Solid Pro Football History
What I most like about this book is the author's dedication to historical accuracy. It was apparent that the author weighed the reliability of different accounts of what happened in order to give a true picture of pro football's past. Often this meant discarding some of the more colorful but dubious stories frequently repeated in other books. I was impressed with the sources used for the ...

an important resource for south-of-the-border birding
This is a fascinating set of papers describing the plants and animals of North America's northernmost tropical deciduous forest--Alamos is less than a day's drive from southern Arizona. Birders will find in Steve Russell's chapter with its useful tabular checklists perhaps the most valuable print resource available treating the avifauna of this site.

Inspiring
When I was a botany student at Queen's years ago I happened on the book in the library. It so thrilled me that I preferred to read it than study my courses. It also created a need to see the natural cathedral Dr. Braun so lovingly described. However, when I had the opportunity to do so, I was concerned that it would not live up to the glorious image her writing had created. Thankfully, I need not ...

horticulture AND art
It's probably safe to call this one a classic; it's just unfortunate that it's out of print and a bit hard to find. Peter Adams comes at the subject of bonsai from the point of view of the trained artist, and his training shows through here. His emphasis on artistic method should be a welcome antidote to the oft-found notion that bonsai is little more than keeping alive a cute little tree in a ...

Better to know what it is you are looking for...
Beautiful pictures accompany the information. I felt as if it was a bit unorganized: No glossary for a quicker reference, and the common names were not used in the Contents section at the front. The information on each particular specimen was done in a very factual way. Too Biology text for me, but probably good for someone with more than a beginner/basic gardening knowledge. I did obtain ...
