Rediscovering Polk
"A Country of Vast Designs" is an excellent reminder of how a well researched and well written book can illuminate what was an otherwise dark and often forgotten piece of the American landscape. Merry's detailed and colorful story telling add depth, perspective and entertainment. For example, his account of the Democratic nomination of 1844 reminds us how crafty our nineteenth century ...

Tremendously insightful; a brilliant read!
I'll preface this review by saying that I am not in the business world, or anything related to it. I'm a psychologist, who spent upwards of 20 years studying creativity (from an academic/ cognitive science perspective). I have also belonged to an internet mail list dealing with the subject for upwards of 20 years; a list comprised of people from all different disciplines. I have read a great ...

very engaging second book
I've been a fan of Donald Norman's "The Design of Everyday Things", (also known as "The Psychology of Everyday Things") for many years, but only recently finally read "Emotional Design" Norman greatly expands his ideas about design here, breaking it down into visceral, behavioral, and reflective design. Behavioral design includes everything discussed in Everyday Things, visceral design is ...

My car crazy son loves this toy!!!
I have a 5 year old boy who is car crazy and he draws cars every day. So naturally, this was one of the most exciting finds I have ever found for him. The light behind the drawing station is fantastic and the mix and match pieces to create your own car is great. He wore out the first Car Design Studio so we had to buy another one. Thank you SMART LABS!

No need to think, buy it!!!
I tried reading other books on the same topic before but I gave up finally after sometime. Their presentation is either boring, too brief, without much explanation, lack of proper example or simply too difficult to read. That book is totally different. I read it quickly and found it very interesting to read. The idea is clearly presented in a comprehensivable way with short text, many graphics ...

A must read book for anyone interested in design and UX
I am a product design student at Stanford University, and found this book to be a great book. Although the beginning started out slow (reciting many of the sorts of examples that you would hear in beginning user-centered design classes). But, as you go through the book it moves beyond the basic principles, picking up steam, layering and extrapolating from them to a set of general techniques and ...

Design Patterns
As book it self states, this is a Catalog of Design Patterns with every pattern deeply analyzed and with the introductory chapter that explains why patterns are used. It sums the years of object oriented design experience. Even though the book is written in 1994 it's still relevant, though some newer languages implement some of the patterns as the language features. I didn't read any other books ...

Intuitions' Role in Strategic Thinking
I start by declaring my conflict. Roger martin is a friend. I sit on the RIM board with him. Dr. Martin is Dean of the Rotman School of Business. One of his previous books was Opposable Minds: Winning Through Integrative Thinking. The theory of that book was that the ability to hold 2 opposing thoughts in mind often lead to a third superior view. The Design of Business has some of this ...

Lindsay did it again
If you're not a Dexter fan yet there is something wrong with you! Jeff Lindsay once again portrays everyones favorite serial killer with a concience as the fantastic character that he is. Maybe not as good as the first two books but still gripped me until the very end. Ending disapointed me a little bit but it is also not at all what I expected so well done. Can't wait for the next Dexter ...

AWESOME! The book I've been searching for
I totally loved this book! The day I got it in the mail I read half of it! If you ever wanted to design your own clothing, or just make your own clothes so that they really fit YOU and not some mannequin or model, then this is for you! I learned so much from this book, I hope she does a sequel! She teaches you how to take your own body measurements (or someone else's if you want to create a ...

go to the head of the class
This is the best overview of the graphic design field I have ever seen. Clear, concise, timely, engaging... the list goes on. Every incoming student in the field should own this book. I would consider it essential for an understanding of why the industry is where it is now, and where it may go in the near future. Maybe even 6 stars.

It's a Keeper (But read it first)
I bought this book to pull together design of a website/e-book/pdf print project. I can say that I've read it, but the value is in its visual graphics and text design. It's a keeper -- for your reference shelf (read it first before you put it on the shelf).

Love it!
I am loving this book! It makes decorating so easy and simple. I actually like that the design layouts are sketches and blueprints because then its easier to imagine your own style in the space. I am not bothered by her "flavored" speech...its not over the top in my opinion, just sprinkled throughout. It does help make it a little more fun, and not so technical. However, she does NOT skimp on the ...

This well written reference to design characteristics. I has good descriptions of the characteristic, examples, and graphics. I got it to apply to user interface design, but it applies to any design field. I would recommend this along side the Tufte books.
