The Harp and Laurel Wreath: Poetry and Dictation for the Classical Curriculum

Ignatius Press

Twaddle-free Copywork
This is *the* all-in-one resource for your classical copywork, dictation, and memory work needs. Laura Berquist has done all the legwork for busy homeschooling parents, bringing together a lovely selection of poetry and organizing it according to the stages of the trivium. Selections for the rhetorical stage include study questions, so the book could double as a literature text in the upper ...

Practical and Concise
This is by far the best book on its subject that I've ever worked with. For some reason it wasn't used until the second year second semester of Ear Training where I went to school, and I wonder why the college made us waste time and money on previous texts when this one had it all. That being said, it's definitely written without self-teaching in mind. From Hindemith's mindset, and that of many ...
Solfege, Ear Training, Rhythm, Dictation, and Music Theory: A Comprehensive Course

Intuitive and Systematic
This book isn't aimed at teaching music theory. Is about learning to sight sing and acquiring all the skills associated with that (pitch recognition, music dictation, etc.). The step by step approach is systematic. It starts with recognising and singing simple patterns first in major then in minor keys. The recognition of pitch is covered in tandem with learning to cope with increasingly complex ...

Thank you, Ms. Ozick, for another stunning book
It's incredible! Every time a new book of Ozick's is published, I give thanks to the Muses for having provided her the necessary inspiration. As usual, her sentences are gorgeous and lyrical; the characters are funny and utterly compelling. "Dictation" is the only story contained that has not been previously published. It begins with the master Henry James and an emerging Joseph Conrad. ...
Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery: Operative Dictations Made Simple

This is a must have for a surgical resident.
This book is very well written and has almost every operation that I could possibly perform as a surgical resident. It's also very brief and to the point. It was a great review of the operation right before going into the OR. Also, I have it downloaded onto my palm so searching for operations is easy and fast. I would highly recommend this product, especially for the general surgery intern.

Somewhat Useful
This book is pretty outdated for the most part especially with much of the formatting that it uses. If you use this book you should make yourself aware of the new industry standards via AAMT Book of Style. However, this book is very good for learning or brushing up on your grammar skills, and it has some pretty helpful lists and things that you can pull out and place in a notebook.

Pretty small
As an upper level resident, it was not that helpful, and certainly small, especially in light of price. One would do better with intern survival guide, or a full length dictation book. Good for a nervous intern though! I gave it to mine.

MiniScript Shorthand

Legend Publishing
, 2008
Existing shorthand systems (Gregg, Pitman, Teeline) provide non-alphabetical symbols or outlines to increase the writing speed. A number of writing strokes is significantly reduced and a high speed can be attained. However, a great deal of time must be spent on memorization and retention is difficult if you decide to use Gregg, Pitman, Teeline and similar methods. On the other hand, speedwriting methods use alphabet letters and are easier to ...

Most useful thing I ever learned - shorthand
Years ago I went to secretarial school and learned shorthand. I use it to this day. It's a wonderful way to take notes when people are talking to you on the phone, reminder notes to do this or that, grocery lists, whatever. Yes, it takes time, work, and drill to learn shorthand. Yes, it's worth your while! Once you know shorthand, you will never have to hide your gift list again .
